12Th-Annual-44-Women-For-Orangewood-Scholarship-Luncheon-Sponsor-Packet.Pdf PRESENTS THE 12th Annual Scholarship Luncheon BENEFITING ORANGEWOOD FOUNDATION Friday, June 10, 2016 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Featuring Former foster youth turned county singer/songwriter & New York Times best-selling author JIMMY WAYNE 12th Annual Scholarship Luncheon Guest Speaker – Jimmy Wayne Jimmy Wayne is a former foster child turned country music singer/songwriter whose songs and story highlight his mission to bring awareness to the youth who age out of the foster system and become homeless. With hits such as "Put Your Hand In Mine," "I Love You This Much," and "Paper Angels," he released "Do You Believe Me Now," his biggest hit to date for which he earned the Millionaire Award for having one million radio spins in America. In 2009, Jimmy toured with Brad Paisley and recorded "Sara Smile" with Daryl Hall and John Oates. In 2010, Jimmy walked halfway across America to raise awareness for youth aging out of the system. The next year, he became CASA’s national spokesperson and released the novel Paper Angels which became a made-for- TV movie with the same title. In 2012, Jimmy helped get the bill extending the age of foster care to 21 passed in both California and Tennessee. Jimmy lives in Nashville and continues to raise awareness for youth by writing, singing, and speaking. “Drawing on his own troubled childhood, the songs address abusive relationships, revenge, missing children, the bad influence of negative people, and uncaring fathers, but every vignette resolves on a positive note. And there are straight-ahead love songs, too; "Tresspassin' " is a flat-out stomper celebrating the thrill of summer love. JIMMY WAYNE heralds the arrival of a promising Nashville talent.” -CDUniverse.com "Believe" also includes "Stay Gone" and "I Love You This Much," two hits from his debut project. Wayne is a compelling songwriter and truly gifted vocalist, and this album heralds the arrival of the country format's next major star.” -Deborah Evans Price, Billboard 12th Annual Scholarship Luncheon The mission of Orangewood Foundation is to prepare foster and community youth to reach their greatest potential. Founded in 1981, Orangewood is one of the leading providers of services to these teens and young adults. Foundation programs focus on four critical areas: basic needs, housing, life skills & employment, and education. Annually, Orangewood serves almost 2,000 youth. Beyond its programs, for thousands of youth in our community, Orangewood means “family,” “opportunity,” and “hope.” 44 Women for Orangewood is a unique group of women passionate about helping Orange County’s abused and neglected children. Founded in 1999 by Susan Samueli as an auxiliary of Orangewood, 44 Women for Orangewood hosts annual fundraising events to support Orangewood’s college scholarship and peer mentor programs for foster care youth. Since 1999, 44 Women for Orangewood has raised over $2.9 million for the Foundation. Proceeds from the 2016 Scholarship Luncheon will assist 44 Women’s scholarship efforts for Orangewood’s youth. In the 2014-2015, the auxiliary raised over $250,000 to help Orangewood youth attend 82 universities, community colleges and trade schools in 15 states. • Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’S Blown Away Tour
COUNTRY CULTURE AND CROSSOVER: Narrative Representations of Gender and Genre Through Lyric, Music, Image, and Staging in Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away Tour Krisandra Ivings A Thesis Presented In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Degree Master of Arts in Music with Specialization in Women’s Studies University of Ottawa © Krisandra Ivings, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the complex and multi-dimensional narratives presented in the work of mainstream female country artist Carrie Underwood, and how her blending of musical genres (pop, rock, and country) affects the narratives pertaining to gender and sexuality that are told through her musical texts. I interrogate the relationships between and among the domains of music, lyrics, images, and staging in Underwood’s live performances (Blown Away Tour: Live DVD) and related music videos in order to identify how these gendered narratives relate to genre, and more specifically, where these performances and videos adhere to, expand on, or break from country music tropes and traditions. Adopting an interlocking theoretical approach grounded in genre theory, gender theory, narrative theory in the context of popular music, and happiness theory, I examine how, as a female artist in the country music industry, Underwood uses genre-blending to construct complex gendered narratives in her musical texts. Ultimately, I find that in her Blown Away Tour: Live DVD, Underwood uses diverse narrative strategies, sometimes drawing on country tropes, to engage techniques and stylistic influences of several pop and rock styles, and in doing so explores the gender norms of those genres. ii Acknowledgements A great number of people have supported this thesis behind the scenes, whether financially, academically, or emotionally.

  • Venturing in the Slipstream
VENTURING IN THE SLIPSTREAM THE PLACES OF VAN MORRISON’S SONGWRITING Geoff Munns BA, MLitt, MEd (hons), PhD (University of New England) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Western Sydney University, October 2019. Statement of Authentication The work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, original except as acknowledged in the text. I hereby declare that I have not submitted this material, either in full or in part, for a degree at this or any other institution. .............................................................. Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts.
