A detective story: Meissen porcelains copying East Asian models. Fakes or originals in their own right? For Immediate Release 30 October 2006 Contact: Christina Freyberg +44 20 7 752 3120 [email protected] Alexandra Kindermann +44 20 7 389 2289 [email protected] MEISSEN MASTERPIECES EXQUISITE AND RARE PORCELAIN MODELS FROM THE ROYAL HOUSE OF SAXONY TO BE OFFERED AT CHRISTIE’S LONDON British and Continental Ceramics Christie’s King Street Monday, 18 December 2006 London – A collection of four 18th century Meissen porcelain masterpieces are to be offered for sale in London on 18 December 2006 in the British and Continental Ceramics sale. This outstanding Meissen collection includes two white porcelain models of a lion and lioness (estimate: £3,000,000-5,000,000) and a white model of a fox and hen (estimate: £200,000-300,000) commissioned for the Japanese Palace in Dresden together with a white element vase in the form of a ewer (£10,000-15,000). “The porcelain menagerie was an ambitious and unparalleled project in the history of ceramics and the magnificent size of these models is a testament to the skill of the Meissen factory,” said Rodney Woolley, Director and Head of European Ceramics. “The sheer exuberance of these examples bears witness to the outstanding modelling of Kirchner and Kändler. The opportunity to acquire these Meissen masterpieces from the direct descendants of Augustus the Strong is unique and we are thrilled to have been entrusted with their sale,” he continued. The works of art have been recently restituted to the heirs of the Royal House of Saxony, the Wettin family. Commenting on the Meissen masterpieces, a spokesperson for the Royal House of Saxony said: “The Wettin family has worked closely, and over many years with the authorities to achieve a successful outcome of the restitution of many works of art among which are these four Meissen porcelain objects, commissioned by our forebear Augustus the Strong. -

ICOMOS Advisory Process Was
Background A nomination under the title “Mining Cultural Landscape Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří” was submitted by the States (Germany/Czechia) Parties in January 2014 for evaluation as a cultural landscape under criteria (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv). The No 1478 nomination dossier was withdrawn by the States Parties following the receipt of the interim report. At the request of the States Parties, an ICOMOS Advisory process was carried out in May-September 2016. Official name as proposed by the States Parties The previous nomination dossier consisted of a serial Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region property of 85 components. ICOMOS noticed the different approaches used by both States Parties to identify the Location components and to determine their boundaries; in some Germany (DE), Free State of Saxony; Parts of the cases, an extreme atomization of heritage assets was administrative districts of Mittelsachsen, Erzgebirgskreis, noticed. Brief Description of Item[from the vendor’s description] A Meissen Böttger stoneware figure of ‘Pulcinell’, from the Commedia dell’arte, partly polished and with original colouring. 16.4cm high, 85.cm wide, 8.2cm deep. Circa 1710-13 ‘Some surface wear to the colours, slight crack in upper right arm’. 2. Context Provenance: English private collection [to be confirmed by the Arts Council]. Exhibition History: n/a? Bibliography/ literature: [on the handful of related items, as this piece seems to be a new discovery] Willi Goder, Klaus Hoffmann [et al.].Johann Friedrich Böttger : die Erfindung des Europäischen Porzellans /Stuttgart, , 1982, p.251. The assessor has used the French edition of 1984 Meredith Chilton, Harlequin Unmasked; The commedia dell’arte and porcelain sculpture, Yale University Press, 2001, p.163 3. Waverley Criteria This figure meets both Waverley Criterion 2 and 3. In its contraposto pose and superior modelling [probably by a German court sculptor], the figure has an excellent claim to be considered of outstanding aesthetic importance, thus meeting the Waverley 2 criterion. It is from a factory which is regarded as one of the leading 18th century ceramic factories, not least because it has the reputation of being the first factory in Europe to make true hard –paste porcelain like the Chinese. There are of course Meissen figures in British collections, but almost invariably of the later enamelled porcelain body, and not of this early experimental ‘stoneware’ body. In subject matter it is the very first of what became a recognized genre: the commedia dell’ arte figure, leading to the porcelain figures of Harlequin, Columbine, Pantaloon etc of the mid to later 18th century , thus fulfilling the criterion set out in Waverley 3. -

THE MEISSEN AGREEMENT TEXTS Chairmen's Foreword 1 The immediate stimulus for this statement dates from 1983, the fifth centenary of Martin Luther's birth. In that year major public celebrations were held in Leipzig and Worms, and the Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. Robert Runcie) chose this opportunity to propose that closer relations should be established between the Church of England and the German Evangelical Churches. This initiative met a warm response from the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany and the Church Leaders' Conference of the Federation of the Evangelical) Churches in the German Democratic Republic. 2 Increasingly cordial relations had, in fact, been developing since 1945. The main focus for church links between England and the German Democratic Republic has been the partnership between Coventry and Dresden, though there have been numerous other contacts as well. The growing fellowship between the Evangelical Church in Germany and the Church of England — fully documented in a pamphlet by Oberkirchenrat K. Kremkau1) — has included not only local twinning links, but also official theological conversations since 1964. 3 A further impetus to developing these relationships was given by the publication of the reports of the Anglican-Lutheran European Commission (1982), the International Anglican-Lutheran Joint Working Group ( 1983), the Anglican-Reformed International Commission ( 1984) and the text Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry of the Faith and Order Commission of The World Council of Churches ( 1982). 4 The presence of Anglican congregations in the Federal Republic of Germany and of Evangelical German-speaking congregations in Great Britain is an additional factor underlining the desirability of closer links.
