Kingdom Quest Year 3 - Supply List - 1 SUPPLYSupply List LIST YearWinter 3, Winter Year 3 Lessons 28-48 Stewardship Note: Kids Kount Publishing recommends using a wide variety of resources with our lessons. This supply list is a guide. Our curriculum is meant to be adaptable, and this includes your selection of supplies. Feel free to substitute videos and crafts similar to the ones suggested. Check for items you may have on hand and adapt as needed. You may be able to use videos from your city library, video rental store, and members of your congregation or other churches. If you are comfortable ordering over the Internet, new and used sources are available for videos and supplies at various prices. Your ideas are a major resource in making this curriculum work for your children’s ministry. You can help others by emailing your suggestions to [email protected]. Sargez received a call from a member of the church who worked for the government authorities.     January 1 – Mary the Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated with a special cult, called by St. Thomas Aquinas, hyperdulia, as the holiest of all creatures. The main events of her life are celebrated as liturgical feasts of the universal Church. Traditionally, she was declared the daughter of Sts. Joachim and Anne. Born in Jerusalem, Mary was presented in the Temple and took a vow of virginity. Living in Nazareth, Mary was visited by the archangel Gabriel, who announced to her that she would become the Mother of Jesus, by the Holy Spirit. She became betrothed to St. Joseph and went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth, who was bearing St. John the Baptist. Acknowledged by Elizabeth as the Mother of God, Mary intoned the Magnificat. When Emperor Augustus declared a census throughout the vast Roman Empire, Mary and St. Joseph went to Bethlehem where he was born, as he belonged to the House of David. There Mary gave birth to Jesus and was visited by the Three Kings. Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple, where St. Simeon rejoiced and Mary received word of sorrows to come later. Warned to flee, St. Joseph and Mary went to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod. They remained in Egypt until King Herod died and then returned to Nazareth. Nothing is known of Mary's life during the next years except for a visit to the Temple of Jerusalem, at which time Mary and Joseph sought the young Jesus, who was in the Temple with the learned elders. The first recorded miracle of Jesus was performed at a wedding in Cana, and Mary was instrumental in calling Christ's attention to the need.

    TRIVIA: GOSPEL MAGIC Jonathan Allen opens up God’s box of tricks In Modern Enchantments (2002), cultural historian Simon During describes the magic of conjuring and stage illusion using the term ‘secular magic’. Such magic is to be distinguished from the ‘real’ or ‘potent’ magic of the shaman (and later the institutionalised priest), and the ‘natural’ magic of the alchemist (and later the scientist). Gospel magic, tricks performed by committed Christians, represents therefore something of an amalgam since it operates within the spheres of secular magic and real magic simultaneously. According to American evangelist Duane Laflin in Greater Gospel Magic (2000), the first documented gospel magician was Rev Charles H Woolston, a Pennsylvanian pastor who used magic tricks, or ‘object lessons’, to illustrate biblical themes to late nineteenth- century revivalist congregations. The use of magic effects in the didactic service of Judeo-Christian belief was in fact common to European mediaeval mystery plays; the decollation of John the Baptist, and the miraculous ascension of Christ were both achieved using principles well documented within magic history (see Reginald Scot’s Discoverie of Witchcraft [1584], and John McKinven’s Stage Flying: 431BC to Modern Times [1995]). In 1978, Father Peter Quang saw his father for the last time in Vietnam. Now, 14 years later and with the help of St. Vincent de Paul Parish where Father Quang serves, the priest looks forward to his dad and mother and two sisters arriving by Christmas. When he was only 16-years-old and living in Viet­ nam, his father offered him some advice. “He told me to treat people with compassion and patience,” said Father Quang. “He said that he would be off to war a lot and that 1 was to watch over my family.” Parishioners managed to gather nearly $16,000 needed to sponsor Father Quang’s family, and students of St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School raised $140. “The yoimgest to the oldest helped,” Father Quang said. “I feel very appreciated.     Friends on the Other Side Fremstilling av religion og magi i Disney-filmen The Princess and the Frog Vilde Marie Svanes Sørbye Høsten 2016 Universitetet i Bergen Institutt for arkeologi, historie, kultur- og religionsvitenskap ii Friends on the Other Side iii ABSTRACT It is documented that television and movies may influence children. The Disney Company plays a major role in film production for children. It seems possible that Disney movies may influence also children’s understanding of religion. This thesis aimed to shed light on how religions are portrayed in one specific Disney movie, The Princess and the frog. This movie is set in and near New Orleans and has a black protagonist. To address this issue, the author has analyzed potential religious traditions and symbols in The Princess and the Frog. Religions and religious aspects have been categorized in relation to Haitian Vodou, the imagined religion voodoo and the “Disney Gospel”. Magic is also a central topic in the thesis, because religion and magic are intertwined in the movie. In The Princess and the Frog there are elements from both Haitian Vodou and the imagined religion voodoo. The antagonist in the movie is portrayed as a voodoo witch doctor, with very powerful magic. He is characterized as an evil voodoo man and elements from Haitian vodou surround him throughout the movie. The good fairy in the movie is portrayed as a voodoo queen, but she sings gospel and there are very few elements from voodoo related to this character. Negative elements from Haitian Vodou and the imagined religion voodoo are used to define the evil antagonist, while more familiar and positive elements from these religions are not presented in the film.
