To get a first impression of the city we start at the more than 900 years old citadel, Hohensalzburg Fortress, which provides a nice view of the city. Walk through the Old town to Mozart's Birthplace, supposed to be the origin of the genius composer. The house is located in the “Getreidegasse”, Salzburg’s most attractive and busy shopping street with its high and narrow houses as well as romantic courtyards. The other highlights we will see are the Cathedral and St. Peter’s Abbey, the Residence and the Festival-Theatres, the oldest pharmacy and the oldest café. Hometown Dynamics Fraueninsel on Lake Chiemsee: Artists’ paradise and place of longing The peaks of the Chiemgau Alps rise majestically to the south-east of the small island of Fraueninsel on Lake Chiemsee. The leaves of the ancient trees sway gently in the wind on the shores of Bavaria’s largest lake – accompanied by the constant splashing of the waves. The shallow banks, small bays and extensive moorland combine to create a picturesque lake landscape like no other. Frauenchiemsee artists’ colony: The mythology of a complete natural idyll For centuries, people have been captivated by the beautiful scenery of Lake Chiemsee. In 1828, four young artists from Munich settled on the secluded little island of Fraueninsel on the lake. This marked the birth of the Frauenchiemsee artists’ colony, which includes sculptors and writers and is one of the oldest and best-known artists’ colonies in Europe. The artists record their longing for perfect beauty on canvas using opulent motifs: the romantic fishermen’s houses of the island, the floral gardens, the decorated houses, the breathtaking natural idylls in the interplay of light and cloud shadows. In this way they use their landscape paintings to spread the mythology of Bavaria around the world. Island pottery: Traditional craftsmanship with a love of detail To this day, artists still live on the secluded, car-free Fraueninsel in the middle of Lake Chiemsee. One of them is Georg Klampfleuthner from the island’s pottery. Founded in the year 1609 to serve the monastery, the pottery has been in his family since 1723, and has been passed down from generation to generation.

  • FOOD of CORMORANTS Phalacrocorax Carbo Sinensis WINTERING in BAVARIA, SOUTHERN GERMANY
185 FOOD OF CORMORANTS Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis WINTERING IN BAVARIA, SOUTHERN GERMANY THOMAS KELLER ABSTRACT Following the spectacular population increase in conti nental Cormorants, numbers of wintering birds on lakes and rivers in Bavaria, southern Germany, have risen sharply. Because of a growing .concern among commercial fishermen and anglers, a diet study has been carried out at two major roosts: one at a lake (lake Chiemsee) and one at a dammed river (lower Inn river). Main prey species were cyprinids (Rudd, Roach, Chub and Bream), but at lake Chiemsee the commercially most important Whitefish also appeared in the diet during spawning in December/January. Mean daily intake per bird increased in the course of winter, because of larger specimens taken. Possible causes and effects of this phenomenon are discussed. Assuming an average daily uptake of 400 g fresh mass, it was estimated that at lake Chiemsee 3.3% of the total annual fish production was taken by Cormorants (vs. 28% by commercial fish ermen). The total catch of Whitefish by Cormorants amounted to a mere 3.2% of the total commercial catch of this species. Larger proportions were scored for Eel (22.3%) and Pike (6.2%). At the lower Inn river it was esti mated that Cormorants took 21 % of the total annual fish production. Both in view of species composition in the Cormorants' diet and of the consumption estimates specified above, it is considered unlikely that the birds impose a serious threat to commercial fisheries. Interference with recreational angling (e.g. for Grayling) may, however, occur. Weinbergstrasse 9, D-97753 Karlstadt-Stetten, Germany.

  • Widening of A8 Motorway South of Munich to the German-Austrian Border
Transport Study for the Danube Macro-Region – Annex II of the Final Report Widening of A8 motorway South of Munich to the German-Austrian border General information This project regards the widening of the transversal section to 6/8 lanes of the motorway A8 from the South of Munich to the German-Austrian border via Bad Reichenhall, for a total length of 116 km. The A8 motorway is a major German road axis which crosses the South-Eastern part of the Free State of Bavaria1. It is part of the TEN-T Core Network, specifically the Rhine-Danube CNC and connects Germany with Austria, linking Munich to Salzburg. As regards the relevance of the project, the widening of A8 motorway from Munich to the state-border with Austria has been identified as a priority project in the 2030 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan of Germany. Figure 1-1 provides with the geographical localisation. According to the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure2, this section is considered a bottleneck of the Rhine-Danube CNC, leading to congestions and undermining the mobility across a major road infrastructure of Bavaria. The project has been divided in 4 sections, one of which is cross-border (see Table 1-1). With respect to the total length, 17,3 km are considered a bottleneck. Figure 1-1: Alignment of A8 motorway and widening project design (in red) Source: BVWP (2016) 1 Definition assumed according to the consulted stakeholders. 2 http://www.bvwp-projekte.de/strasse/A008-G010-BY/A008-G010-BY.html Transport Study for the Danube Macro-Region – Annex II of the Final Report The project is meant to improve the characteristics of the A8 in terms of traffic safety, of the quality of transport and to alleviate some environmental issues (e.g., dewatering3 and noise).
