Tárgyszavak: Gastropoda, Paratethys, kainozoos, lutetiai, egri, badeni Abstract In this paper 26 recently collected Cenozoic marine gastropod species from Hungary are briefly described. Two Lutetian (Eocene), two Egerian (Oligocene) and 22 Badenian (Miocene) species are represented; most of them are newly- recorded, while others are illustrated for the first time as being present in Hungary. The extended stratigraphic and palaeogeographic ranges of the respective species are summarized and a new taxon is introduced: Lautoconus harzhauseri KOVÁCS nov. sp. In previous studies, we used mitogenome sequences for reconstructing robust phylogenies, which comprised in total 120 individuals representing the majority of species (69.7%) described from this biogeographical region (except Angolan endemics) and grouped into seven genera within the family Conidae. -

Publication History Prior to the 1960’s, there were few collectors in Angola who analysed specimens, the localities, and published information. Shells, brought back to Europe by traders and seamen, were analysed by conchologists of the time, based on shell morphology and pattern. The earliest descriptions were C. genuanus by Linneaus, 1758 , C. ermineus Born, 1778 and C. pulcher by Lightfoot, 1786; all West African species but found in Angola. Reeve in his 1843/1844 publication of cones introduced C. tabidus together with the first two of the species endemic to Angola ie C. aemulus and C. bulbus. Kiener, 1845 described C. guttatus, a name deemed to be a homonym and replaced by Da Motta in 1991 as C. neoguttatus. Kiener in 1848 introduced three more endemic cones ie C. africanus, C. variegatus and C. zebroides. Sowerby III described C. carnalis in 1879 and C. fuscolineatus in 1905. Tryon in his 1884 series of monographs published C. chytreus. Paes-Da Franca described two species in 1957, C. lucirensis and C. angolensis. Both species have been consistently accepted as junior synonyms of C. chytreus and C.bulbus. By the 1970’s Trovão and several Portuguese began collecting in an organised manner in Angola. Given, the diversity in colour pattern and form of specimens in any population, identifying the species boundaries became a problem, so Trovão introduced other factors into his descriptions of new species, the animal features, the periostracum, and the radula. Abstract As elsewhere, invertebrate taxa have received little attention in conservation planning in India. The Western Ghats has been designated as a global biodiversity hotspot, one of only two such designations in India. We have assembled a database for land snail records in the region, incorporating both published records and the results of our own surveys over the last three years. Of the 269 species so far recorded, 75% are endemic to the region. Many species have very restricted ranges within the region. There is a decline in diversitv and local endemism from south to north. The southernmost division (8~·12°N) has much the richest recorded fauna (210 species), and the level of local endemism The latter is much lower in the central and northern divisions. There is thus considerable faunal turnover within the region. The overall level of endemism is higher than that recorded for other taxa, and our data have already been used to identify three local hotspots within the region. These results are discussed in terms of present climate and habitats, and in terms of environmental history. -

They are an ideal group for monitoring site specific environmental impact assessment studies because of their limited migration patterns. Majority of them remain undiscovered or under described, partly because of insufficient exploration and partly because of their often minute sizes (Emberton, 1995). Unfortunately, for the last 75 years or so, in South India, no attention has been paid for this important group with exceptions of some localized reviews and publications [(Tonapi and Mulhekar, 1963; Tonapi 1971; Subba Rao and Mitra, 1979, 1986; Madhyastha et ai., 2003, 2005; Mavinkurve et ai., 2004a, (in press); Sandhya et ai., (submitted)]. The works of Ramanan (1900) and Sathyamurthi (1960) are the preliminary source for those interested in the terrestrial molluscs of Tamil Nadu. This work is in continuation of the checklist for the land snails of the southern states that is being fonnulated (Mavinkurve et al., 2004b). STUDY AREA Situated on the southeastern side of the Indian peninsula, the state of Tamil Nadu has an area of 130,058 sq Ian. The landmass of the state can be divided into two natural divisions: (i) The eastern coastal plain (ii) The hilly region along the north and the west. Along the whole length of the western part, at a distance from the sea varying from 80 to 160 km runs the Western Ghats range, a steep and rugged mass averaging 1220 metres above the sea level. -

Abstract The endemic Macaronesian Canaridiscus, provisionally placed in the Discidae genus Atlantica, are closely linked to the peculiar laurel forest habitat of these islands. Knowledge of Atlantica (Canaridiscus) is increased here with the descrip- tion, for the first time, of the genital system of three more of its species. The epiphallus is apparently lacking and the penis is much longer than that known from any of the Discidae of Europe and North America; generally it is too large to be more than partly accommodated in the distal female genital tract. Keraea has been regarded as an endemic Macaronesian genus of Discidae known only from a few shells, but its Madeiran species has been identified as a Trochulus (Hygromiidae) and its type species (from Tenerife) also matches Hygromiidae, not Discidae. The origin and relationships of the Macaronesian Discidae are discussed. The simplest explanatory model is apparently that they represent the last living relicts of a more diverse fauna of Discidae that lived in Europe during the Tertiary; Atlantica (Canaridiscus) was probably isolated early on from the remaining Discidae.
