Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -

Abstract: This is the first report of two ectoparasitoid wasps, Elachertus inunctus (Nees, 1834) in Iran and Elachertus pulcher (Erdös, 1961) (Hym.: Eulophidae) in the world, that parasitize larvae of the tomato leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lep.: Gelechiidae). The specimens were collected from tomato fields and greenhouses in Ahwaz, Khouzestan province (south west of Iran). Both species are new records for fauna of Iran. The knowledge about these parasitoids is still scanty. The potential of these parasitoids for biological control of T. absoluta in tomato fields and greenhouses should be investigated. The English version of Part One was issued in 1987 (Amerind Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi-edition supervised by the U.S.D.A. , Washington, D.C.), and it covered the non-ditrysian families (with only a superficial treatment of the Nepticulidae), and eight families among the lower Ditrysia, namely the Psychidae and dll members of the Zygaenoidea, Cossoidea, Sesioidea and Tortricoidea. Part Two deals with a larger number of families (29 if one accepts the classification that I proposed in 1991: see Entomol. Seand. 22:90-91). Çetinog˘lu: The Mechanisms for Terrorizing Minorities 15 The Mechanisms for Terrorizing Minorities: The Capital Tax and Work Battalions in Turkey during the Second World War Sait Çetinog˘lu Two policies against non- Muslim minorities implemented during the Second World War by the Turkish government are analyzed in this essay: (1) the Capital Tax (Varlik Vergisi) implemented as a means of economic destruction of these minorities from November 1942 to March 1944 and (2) the mobiliza- tion of minority young men aged 18 to 45 into the so- called work battalions (amele taburlari) from May 1941 to September 1942 as a reprise of the work battalions during World War I. The motivations, conditions, and implemen- tation of both antiminority measures are examined and their consequences discussed. The Capital Tax The Varlik Vergisi constitutes a dark chapter in the history of modern Tur- key. It was implemented during 1942 – 44 under the pretext of controlling the price of goods and preventing accumulation of capital in a few hands, even though the very same government had taken no measures to stop the expansion of a black market and consequent increase of illegal profits in the previous two years. Passed under the pretext of public complaints, this measure implemented a devastating economic destruction policy against non- Muslim minorities through heavy taxation, confiscation of properties, and exile of members of these groups to work camps. The aim was to destroy the economic and cultural base of these minorities, loot their properties and means of livelihood, and, at the same time, “turkify” the economy of Turkey. -

Dr. Şahin YILDIRIM* Öz: Antik çağlarda Doğu Bithynia ve Batı Paphlagonia bölgeleri arasındaki önemli geçiş noktalarından birisi olan Tieion antik kenti, ülkemizin Batı Karadeniz bölgesinde, Zonguldak İli, Çaycuma İlçesi, Filyos beldesi sınırlarında bulunmaktadır. Kent, Filyos (Billaios) Nehri’nin hemen ağzında yer almakta idi. Billaios Nehri, Tieion antik kentinin ekonomisi için çok büyük bir öneme sahipti. Billaios Nehri, vadisi boyunca uzanan bereketli toprakları sayesinde burada yaşayan topluluklara hatırı sayılır miktarda tarımsal fayda sağlamıştır. Nehir ağzından 30 km. kadar ötedeki Gökçebey’e kadarki ulaşım, küçük tekne ve kayıklarla sağlanmakta idi. İç bölgelerden elde edilen ticari eşya, tarım ürünleri ile gemi yapımında kullanılan keresteler, Tieion limanına bu elverişli nehir yolu ile ulaştırılmaktaydı. Billaios Nehri’nin Devrek Çayı (Ladon) ile birleştiği Gökçebey Üçburgu’da 2009 yılında meydana gelen büyük bir sel neticesinde nehir kenarında Roma Dönemi’ne tarihlendirilen yapı kalıntıları ortaya çıkmıştır. Tieion antik kentinin güney sınırında bulunan bu yerde kazı ekibinin gerçekleştirmiş olduğu yüzey araştırmaları sırasında, nehir içinde üzerlerinde Grekçe yazıt bulunan iki kurşun terazi ağırlığı bulunmuştur. Bu bölgede 2012 yılı Eylül ayı başında Karadeniz Ereğli Müzesi’nin başkanlığında, Doçent Dr. Şahin Yıldırım’ın bilimsel danışmanlığında bir kurtarma kazısı başlatılmış ve Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’ne tarihlendirilen çok sayıda çanak çömlek ve amphora parçaları bulunmuştur. Bölgede bulunan tüm bu yazıtlı kurşun ağırlıklar ve çanak çömlekler bize yapının işlevi hakkında ipucu vermektedir. -

DEVREK TİCARET VE SANAYİ ODASI DEVREK VE GÖKÇEBEY HAVZASINDA İMALAT SANAYİ SEKTÖREL ÇEŞİTLİLİK MEVCUT DURUM VE GELİŞME PROJEKSİYONLARINA İLİŞKİN ÖN DEĞERLENDİRME RAPORU 2016/2 ARAŞTIRMACI ÖZETİ Devrek ve Gökçebey iş dünyasının çatı örgütü konumunda bulunan Devrek Ticaret ve Sanayi Odası tarafından gerçekleştirilen bu çalışmada bölgede geleceğe yönelik alternatif sanayi alanlarının gelişimine yönelik mevcut plan, program ve veriler ile ekonomik bir analiz gerçekleştirilmeye çalışılmaktadır. Çalışmanın temel amacı Oda faaliyet alanına giren bölgenin sanayiye yönelik sektörel çeşitliliğini ortaya koyarak hangi alanlarda daha fazla gelişebileceğine yönelik eldeki veriler ışığında tespitlerde bulunmaktır. Araştırmada izlenen yöntemlerden birincisi makro çerçevede ulusal ve bölgesel kalkınma plan ve programları incelenerek bölgeye ilişkin projeksiyonların belirlenmesidir. Bu noktada makro nitelikte incelenen temel planlardan biri onuncu kalkınma planı (2014-2018), diğeri ise kalkınma bakanlığının 2014-2023 bölgesel gelişme ulusal stratejisidir. Mikro nitelikte ise TR81 bölgesi için Batı Karadeniz Kalkınma Ajansı tarafından hazırlanan 2014-2023 Batı Karadeniz Bölge Planıdır. Planlar içerisinde özellikle Devrek ve Gökçebey için belirlenen kalkınma stratejileri önemli yol gösterici niteliğindedir. Ağırlıklı olarak çalıştay ve saha çalışmalarına dayalı bu yöntem kısıtlı bir bilgi ağı sunmaktadır. A Note on the Prehistory of the Devrek Region, Northern Turkey

Düring2 INTRODUCTION In this brief report we would like to present Prehistoric ceramics collected at a number of sites in central Zonguldak (see fig. 1). These assemblages are of interest in relation to the broader topic of Anatolian Prehistory for two reasons. First, at present nothing has been published about the Prehistory of this part of northern Turkey, except in passing in brief reports in the Arkeoloji SonuçlarÕ ToplantÕsÕ (Karau÷uz 2005; 2006; 2007). Second, we are convinced that some of these sherds date to the fifth millennium BC, and are thus of great importance because they date to the Middle Chalcolithic (ca. 5500 to 4000 cal BC), which is archaeologically poorly documented and understood across most of Asia Minor. THE SURVEY AND THE REGION The material presented here was collected in an archaeological surface survey directed by Güngör Karau÷uz from Selçuk University in Konya that took place between 2004 and 2006 in central Zonguldak.3 In this survey the districts (ilçeler) of Devrek, Gökçebey, Çaycuma, and Ere÷li were investigated. However, the main focus of the survey was on the Devrek district, in which all but one of the sites discussed in this paper are located (fig. 1). Prior to this survey no archaeological work of any kind had been done in the central Zonguldak region. In recent years, however, a rescue excavation was performed in the Ere÷li region of Zonguldak, at the site of YassÕkaya, located about 20 kilometres south of the village of Zoro÷lu, in which Early Bronze Age remains were uncovered probably dating to the EBA II or III (Efe and Mercan 2001). -
