Here is Todd Boss’s adaptation and lyrics to Jake Runestad’s choral piece. Jake Runestad ● Born 1986 ● From Minnesota ● Writes for choir, opera, orchestras, and wind ensembles ● Jake Runestad was asked to write a choir piece and he chose Beethoven’s letter as the lyrics. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is one of the most important composers of French keyboard music in the twentieth century. He composed numerous works in nearly every musical genre, many inspired by his Catholic faith. Vingt regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus (Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus) is a two-hour masterpiece for solo piano written in 1944, and is one of the most significant of his works. The piece is constructed by using three main themes: the Thème de Dieu (Theme of God), Thème de l’étoile et de la Croix (Theme of the Star and of the Cross), and Thème d’accords (Theme of Chords). The “Theme of God” is based on an F-sharp major chord with chromatic passing tones in the inner voice.

Already four years had passed since the composer confided to his brothers Caspar and Johann in a letter known as the Heiligenstadt Testament: “For the last six years I have been attacked by an incurable complaint...I am obliged to live as in exile. What a humiliation, when anyone standing beside me could hear at a distance a flute that I could not hear, or any one heard a shepherd singing, and I could not distinguish a sound!” Fortunately, Beeethoven’s hearing was yet unaffected when in 1794 he attended an extraordinary violin recital by Franz Clement, a 13-year-old Viennese wunderkind. The impression held fast, and 12 years later, Clement was honored by the dedication of Beethoven’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra . But along the way, Clement had also matured into a very fine conductor and had further endeared himself to Beethoven by conducting the premier of the master’s great “Eroica” symphony. We sometimes overlook the wide vista of Beethoven’s full catalog: volumes of folk settings (including many songs on light Irish and Scottish lyrics) an abundance of chamber music, an opera titled Fidelio (also premiered by Clement), various overtures, oratorios, nine grandiose symphonies, five concertos for piano, and - among much else - even a few drinking songs! As for Opus 61 , it became one of the most formative works in the violin repertoire.

Both examples link silence to stillness with the implication that non-activityis a means of evoking sacred presence. It is proposed that such an evocation is achieved through attaching aesthetic and ethical value to the performance of stillness and silence. Furthermore, we suggest that the identity of each of these religious communities inis, many respects, defined through the emphasis that is placed on the existential and moral significance of silence.     THE SOUND OF SILENCE: AN ETHNOGRAPHY ON THE SAMA’RITUAL IN THE NEMATOLLAHI KANEQAH IN TORONTO KATAYOUN GHANAI A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTERS OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO June 2018 ©Katayoun Ghanai, 2018 Abstract This thesis examines the Sufi ritual of Sama’ as practiced by the Nematollahi order in Toronto and will explore how music induces trance in Sufis during their ceremonies called “Sama’”. My approach is ethnomusicological. Sama’, includes poetry and music through which Sufis enter into trance. The “structural coupling” theory may be applied to understand how Sufis participate in ritual and through active faith, undergo physical and physiological changes. The Sufis are coupled to the ritual through a common history, music, or previous participation (conditioning), practiced consciously by a group of individuals. A Sama’s script is never predictable; it is always improvisatory. A good Sama’ is when the Sufis’ emotional arousal matches the intensity of the music and a transcendent symbiosis occurs. Between 1914 and 1927, the reputation of Bach migrated away from one having nationalistic and Romantic associations to one embodying both a “universal” objectivity and a distinctly American subjectivity. Similarly, the manner in which Bach’s music was performed also changed. Before the Great War, transcribing and arranging Bach’s music was common. After the war, some New York City critics began to advocate for Bach’s music to be played as historical reconstructions. Transcriptions and arrangements continued to be performed alongside historical reconstructions, and both a subjective and historically “objective” approaches to performing the composer’s music existed. New York City musician William Henry Humiston (1869-1923) and his idea of Bach provides a useful case study of one musician’s approach to understanding the composer.
