Thanks to some great work by Groundsman Dave Keane, we were are to use Orakei Domain. Rugby training lights had been installed in recent days. Whilst after testing the posts were dismantled and stored away, their footings had to be turfed over to allow summer sport. This is what led to the Prems having to play their first game at Te Atatu but, thanks to Dave, this week’s game was possible at Orakei. East Coast Bays, fresh from cleaning out a full strength Howick Pakuranga side for 98, batted first: The new, streamlined, Rav and Ganesh on attack – tight, economical lines – especially from Ganesh. Chappie took a sharp catch in the gully off Rav at 22, and 1 run later, Tom Talbot effected a run out and Rav then had Langridge caught behind – 3/33. Then came Lockie - his pace added cosiderable bite and tension. Another caught behind – Ben in top form. Tom Hills relieved Rav and immediately Ben picked up his 3rd catch behind the stumps – 5/45 and ECB on the run! Spin was introduced but Delport took to Chappie and ECB was rather let off the hook. The experienced Mimmack was trapped lbw to Dave at 114 and the skipper then wrapped the innings up brilliantly with his best ever Premier figures – 5/22! And a word for our ‘keeper – Ben took 4 catches, no byes, a very tidy effort indeed! A sound start, opemers Ben and Tim – put on 31 but then 3 wickets fell with no addition! Tom Talbot and Chappie both dismissed without scoring. Then Ben was bowled at 41 – Lane on fire with 3 cheap wickets George Harper, 16, stopped the rot but it was Jesse Simpson, 51, who saved the day.with a bold, mature knock Coming in at 3/31, Jesse, with George, took the total to 75 before127 was on the board before he was dismissed. Jesse’s 51 came off only 68 balls – a very positive response to our early collapse. 19 still needed and still some nervous moments – but Tom Hills and Dave Goddard settled the matter very emphatically. No nonsence - some good bold shots soon sorted things out and the win achieved. This coming weekend – defence of the Hedley Howarth Trophy (Two Dayers) starts over Saturday and Sunday – Vs Suburbs New Lynn at Orakei Domain no. 1 Reserves – a Win & a Sensational 156* to Sam Sam Varcoe – triumphant after scoring 156* 17 October 2015 BIRKENHEAD vs PARNELL at Shepherd’s Park, Beach Haven (a) PARNELL 327/5 (50) Sam Varcoe 156*, Stu Wood 47 (24), Simon Wood 79 BIRKENHEAD 176 (33) Prasant Dhanjee 3/32 (10, Chey Barnes 2/25 (5), Stu Wood 2/25 (4), Billy Sanger 2/30 (5) PARNELL WON BY 151 RUNS TEAM SCRIBE, “2XL 3”, REPORTS: The Premier Reserve team were desperate to get their season off to a good start for 2015/2016. Their first match saw them traveling to Shepherds Park to play the newly promoted Birkenhead. In his first act as Captain, Ryan Turner, won the toss and chose to bat. With a batting line up bolstered by premier opening batsman Sam Varcoe, an easy decision to make. The innings was set alight early by Stuart Wood. He was dismissed in the 7th over, with the total on 78, for 47 of a mere 24 balls. Simon Wood replaced his brother to join Varcoe. These two took advantage of the early momentum and continued to add to the already growing total. The positive start allowed them to accumulate through some tight bowling and set the innings up for a surge in the latter stages. Varcoe brought up a chanceless 100 in the 42nd over much to the pleasure of his on looking teammates. The pair had amassed a 198 run partnership before they were separated in the 44th over, with Wood skying a ball which was caught by the keeper for 79. Varcoe continued what can only be described as one of the most dominant, well-constructed prem-reserve innings ever witnessed. He raced from 100 to 156* in the space of 7 overs. The side posted a formidable 327/5 from their 50 overs. Two early missed chances gave the hosts a shred of hope as the Birkenhead opening pair propelled the home side to 77 off the first 10 overs. It was the first change bowlers Billy Sanger and Prashant “Danger” Dhanjee who made the vital breakthroughs. Once these initial wickets fell any chance of a Birkenhead win went with them. Runs dried up and wickets fell at regular intervals shared amongst the experience old ball bowlers in Dhanjee, Barnes and S.W. Wood. Wood’s one handed full stretched diving catch of his own bowling was the perfect example of grace and poise under pressure. Birkenhead were dismissed for 176 in the 33rd over. An excellent start to the season but the lads a very aware that it is just that. Some early momentum has been established but as Author Michael Korda said; “One way to keep momentum going is to have constantly greater goals.” On to the next goal fellas. Sam – shots all round the wicket and then tucking one away to leg to bring up his ton Sam Varcoe – opened the innings with Stu Wood and then dominated the innings in spectacular fashion. Sam’s 156* was chanceless – his 100 was in the 42nd over and then he opened up with some magnificent shots to bring up his 150. Simon Wood, came in at 3. to replace brother Stu (47 off 24) who was out lbw. Simon batted most sensibly – pushing singles to give Sam the strike – to put on over 200 with Sam for the 2nd wicket. These others could only watch in awe : scorers Tom Miller & Billy Sanger, Coach Simon Herst and Mohan Wali And Stu Wood, Skipper Ryan Turner, Chey Barnes and Blue Hamel Juniors’ Muster Day – 17 Oct. Last Saturday we had a huge turnout on Thomas Bloodworth Park – enormously successful. Youngsters dead keen to start their season. Did anyone take any photos? I would dearly love to have them for inclusion in the next Update. I wasn’t able to attend the Muster myself – I was committed to assisting our Premiers setting up at Orakei Domain and for taking equipment over to our Reserves playing at Shepherd’s Park, Beach Haven. And, for these upcoming months, please send me photos through the season – young cricketers love to see their feats recorded and their photos in print. Urgent - Lost Property - Urgent This bin of clothing and gear left behind in the Terry Jarvis Centre is, really, a disgrace. A couple of months ago it was cleaned out, owners of a few named articles were contacted and some items claimed and the rest given to the St Aidan’s Mission Shop. In next to no time it has grown again – sheer carelessness of the part of some youngsters! PLEASE, PLEASE, COME AND COLLECT YOUR GEAR FROM THE TJC! ITEMS NOT COLLECTED BY 31 OCTOBER WILL AGAIN BE GIVEN TO ST AIDAN’S MISSION SHOP where you can buy them back at very reasonable prices. Note: the St Aidan’s Mission Shop is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10am – 2pm, St Aidan’s Church Hall, corner Remuera Road and Ascot Avenue. Remuera Recent Travels Whilst travelling in Augut and September, the Haggitts met up with two past Parnell CC club Captains – Ed Pickmere, in Edinburgh, and Matt McMillin, in Glasgow. Both were well and very interested in Parnell news: Ed and Nicola Pickmere flanked by Jenny and Bryan – lunch at Edinburgh AND ALSO: Simon Roberts who dined with us at the Golden Lion, Easenhall, near Rugby Simon, who came out and played/coached at Parnell in 2012/13, is at Loughborough University and is presently doing a stint at Wellingborough School. Simon, as mentioned in Update 85, hit 555 runs for Leatherhead CC at 55.50, highest score 150*, this last UK season. Simon is flanked by John and Sheila Chard – John is a cousin of my wife, Jenny, and an old boy (like Simon) of St John’s School, Leatherhead where Ian Trott coached for 12 years. John and Sheila were our very knd hosts in Rugby and guided us to so many wonderfully historic and scenic parts of the Midlands. At the time, John was very much looking forward to the RWC – due to start the day we left for Plymouth. A rugby player in his youth, he will have been most disappointed with England’s early departure from the Tournament.
