You get out there and you can be teaching full-time in your own classroom. I was working at a Canadian international school, so was teaching Canadian curriculum, and experiencing the world. From those experiences, it’s really changed the way I teach my students here in Canada. I think using my Bachelor of Ed for international travel was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Shannon Bomben, BEd, 2011 employers say...

“We are very impressed with Nipissing’s Education Career Fair and the quality of graduates from the Schulich School of Education. The students are always well prepared, have strong resumes, and are interested in learning more about what the OCDSB has to offer. Over the last couple of years, the number of new teacher positions at the OCDSB has grown and we are continuing to add teaching positions. We have traditionally enjoyed great success with Nipissing University graduates.” Barry Scott, Human Resources Officer, Ottawa Carleton District School Board

“Nipissing’s Education Career Fair is extremely well organized and thoughtfully designed. The students are well organized, they ask smart questions, look professional and have given some thought to what they want in their career. We work with a lot of First Nations communities and the Nipissing students are prepared and knowledgeable about Indigenous education. It’s wonderful to meet future teachers who are so well-informed and open to working in the North.” Mattie Goetstouwers, Teacher Recruitment Manager, Teach for Canada

“I chose Nipissing because of the great relationships students can form with their professors, and the excellent supports and services provided by the Student Accessibility Services staff at the University. The staff in Student Accessibility Services is fantastic. I identify as a student with a disability and require extra support in order to be successful in school. From providing support with my assistive technology or finding student note takers to assist me with note taking in my courses, they go above and beyond to meet the needs of the University community.”

IN STUDENT RESEARCH GRANTS 2014 – 2019

Turning ideas into reality For award winning business student Jeremy Butterworth, the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course he took in 2017 instantly helped him realize his dreams. The third-year student turned his course-work into a full-fledged business opportunity, with external funding allowing him to make a reality out of his idea for a fitness-based app, named Flex.

“My professors were incredibly helpful in pushing me to flesh out all aspects of the business plan, including financial forecasting and competitor analysis. They really helped me synthesize the plan to become a professional product, and also helped me to find grants that were available for young entrepreneurs. I highly recommend this course to any students interested in entrepreneurship.”

Jeremy is now working with a company to develop the app and is planning to launch Flex this year.
