BID JANUARY RARE SOUL AUCTION & A THE FOUR SIGHTS LOVE IS A HURTING SHY-SOUL 101 M- 200 GAME One of those ‘one box, one time’ situations (probably via John Anderson) that saw, at the time, a lowly price. Problem is that it hasn’t been located in the U.S. since and is a rarity for sure. West Coast maestro Miles Grayson is at the helm and the flipside ‘The Dreamer’ is worthwhile too – so we’ve ‘soundbitten’ it for you. B ROBERT TANNER SWEET MEMORIES MEGATONE 113 M- 1500 Crossover giant may well be a one-off in this ‘as new’ condition. Originally from Washington, D.C., Tanner ended up in Lynchburg, Virginia where he recorded two fine singles through 1968-69. He was also a member of The New Sounds who recorded their eponymous album (released on Turbo) also in Lynchburg in 1970. C GLORIA & THE T-AIRA’S I’M SATISFIED BETTY 1204 M- 300 Seemingly a one-off for the tiny Chicago label and the only one of half a dozen releases to appeal to ‘our’ crowd. It’s a 1967 release, played back in the ‘golden era’ but never booted. Apparently, the group were Gloria Cummings, Audrey Cummings and their cousin Beverly Sims. D MATT LUCAS BABY YOU BETTER KAREN 2524 VG++ 700 GO GO Despite the sticker mark on the label, the vinyl on this one is very good – almost mint minus. In essence, Lucas was a blue-eyed rocker who later in his career turned to R&B and Soul without any success. This collaboration with Ollie McLaughlin and Popcorn Wylie ticks all the right ‘Northern’ boxes, not least of which is being very scarce. E BARBARA KING WHAT I DID IN THE GULFSTREAM VG++ 1000 STREET 1105 A total monster of soulful funky-edged Northern Soul and like item D, almost a mint minus (one light mark). The Gulfstream release is the first release before the one on Alwa and actually a different version (both are fantastic, however). The label is out of Hollywood, Florida which is in-between Miami and Fort Lauderdale on the East Coast. F JUNIUS (BUGS) HUGHES I’M WHAT THE HEW 711 M- 500 DOCTOR ORDERED Ultra-rare New York soul 45 known from few copies indeed, in fact this is the first one we have had in over 45 years of record hunting / dealing. Artist is a total unknown and we can’t find evidence of any other releases on the label either. It has that R&B edge to it that could really take it places. G CLIFF NOBLES MY LOVE IS GETTING ATLANTIC 2352 M- 200 STRONGER WD Apologies to whoever had asked me for this a few months ago and I couldn’t find the copy I knew we had somewhere. Only fair to put it on ‘open offer’, therefore. It’s a sparkling demo of one of the biggest spins of the current century which only amazes that it was not highly regarded ‘back in the day’. H SAM DEES SOUL SISTER LO LO 2306 M- 150 For long enough (even then not in the seventies), Sam was regarded as having only ‘Lonely For You Baby’ as his lone Northern stomper. Very wisely, a few years ago, someone decided to try this, the flip of the Deep classic ‘Easier To Say Than Do’ which is a superb Stax/Atlantic-styled dancer with soul to spare. I JOHNNY BARNES NOTHING WITHOUT JABA 801 VG++ 500 YOUR LOVE For long enough this disc was the ‘Frank Wilson’ of the Belgian Popcorn scene – the ultimate 45 to have. Eventually the UK took to older sounding tracks and this was ideal, but very-hard- to-find. Good condition but has one 2mm-wide mark on the playing surface and the record clicks a few times. Check the soundbite. J JAMES COLE REST & DRESS SPECTRA 8032 VG++ 200 Got this unknown a few years ago and sold it to a prominent deejay who covered it up (as Bobby Rich) and since sold it me back as part of his collection. See what you think… its rare! K JOHNNY HOWARD THE CHASE IS ON BASHIRE 101 WD M- 200 Has to be seriously rare on a West Coast styrene press and it’s the only format we’ve seen the green issue on as well. As ever with mint styrene, the sound quality is totally crisp and superb. L THE NATURAL FOUR I THOUGHT YOU ABC 11253 M- 250 WERE MINE Another styrene minter, originally on Boola Boola, when the major label took the group they zipped up the tempo. This was 1970 and there is some evidence they were not done with Boola Boola as ‘Hanging On To A Lie’ is from 1971. M IMAGINATIONS STRANGE FRATERNITY M- 200 NEIGHBORHOOD 1001 D Beautiful minty-mint copy in its original sleeve (not ‘birth’ sleeve please… we might throw up) of a track first spun at Wigan by R. Searling as ‘Ray Pollard and The Wanderers’. It’s a 1967 recording sneaked out early in the next year and produced by a genuine ‘great unknown’ of Northern Soul, Ray Allen. You’d be surprised how many great records he supervised. N KEITH CURTISS I GOT TO KEEP YOU SMOKE 601 VG++ 600 BABY A one-off artist (could be a pseudonym of course) for George Blackwell’s New Jersey imprint hailing from the labels’ most prolific year (1967). What’s more, there are two great sides for your money and we’ve put the flipside on the soundbite too as it is excellent. O CURLY MOORE YOU DON’T MEAN SANSU 473 WD M- 300 Yet another of this auction’s breath-taking minters (these are old records y’know!) and another one, like Cliff Nobles (item G) to rightfully stake its claim on the dancefloors of the New Millennium after inhabiting the collector’s realm back in the day – and there are plenty more left yet!     "KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.

B THE EBONY’S I CAN’T HELP BUT LOVE YOU AVIS 1001 VG++ 300 It is difficult not to believe that this is not the group that had tremendous seventies releases on Philadelphia International but various sources do not recognise this as the group’s first effort in 1966. We absolutely believe it to be them. Two great sides are produced by Ray Sharp and Roland Chambers whatever the group’s identity. The storming ‘I Can’t Help’ is backed by a very neat midtempo item which points heavily towards their future sound.

NOTE: Regrettably our holiday season was the slowest we've ever seen and it may mean that we will not be able to continue operating our business for very much longer. I am no longer a young man (not by a long shot!) and don't have the energy to pursue ways in which we may be able to promote the business. I would love to be able to settle down and listen to all the music I have gathered over the years in a relaxed setting and with critical reviewing faculties turned off. I would love to see Roots & Rhythm continue and thrive and even if we make it through the current crisis I would still like to get away from the stress of running a business so I am open to having someone else take over and move the company forward.     Sammy Davis, Jr. is pictured above in two scenes from the Broadway smash “Golden Boy." The original cast album on Capitol is currently one of the hottest Broadway-casters on sale. “Golden Boy" also represents Capitol’s second major success in the original cast LP field during 1964, the previous winner being the long-running Barbra Streisand smash “Funny Girl.” The “Funny Girl" album was awarded an RIAA Gold Record some months back. Capitol’s plans for 1965 call for continuing activity in the Broadway field with at least two more original cast albums slated for release by the label during the new year. The success of “Golden Boy” is another personal triumph for Sammy Davis, con- sidered one of the greatest entertainers of this or any generation.
