I / We wish to attend the event. Number of Guests.................. (delete as appropriate) The Cornet is based on a text by Rainer Maria Rilke, from which Ullmann chose twelve pieces. Rilke tells the haunting story of a young soldier who experiences love and death in one night. Ullmann’s composition is a rare combination of recitation and piano. The music underlines the dramatic action, comments on it, illustrates it and thus intensifies the effect. The Artistic Director of Elysium – between two continents Gregorij H. von Leïtis, who premiered Ullmann’s Cornet in various cities in Europe and in New York City, will recite Rilke’s text. Dan Franklin Smith is the pianist. The performance starts with a lecture by Elysium’s program director Michael Lahr introducing the topic of the “Music from Terezin”. Viktor Ullmann was born on January 1, 1898 in Teschen (now part of Poland) into a distinguished Moravian and Hungarian family of Jewish descent. After finishing school in Vienna, he served in the First World War as a volunteer. On his father’s request he first registered with the Law school in Vienna in 1918 but then went on to study music, including composition with Arnold Schoenberg. A brilliantly thoughtful and highly educated musician – a committed follower of the teachings of Rudolf Steiner and the Anthroposophical movement and exponent of Schoenberg’s twelve tone compositional system, Ullmann preferred to live in Prague. When the persecution of the Jews spread to occupied Czechoslovakia in 1939, Ullmann was increasingly put under pressure. In 1942 he was deported to Theresienstadt where he continued to compose. Transported from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz on October 16, 1944, Viktor Ullmann perished two days later in the gas chambers. Gregorij H. von Leïtis founded Elysium 25 years ago in New York City and has been its Artistic Director ever since. He has directed in many different theaters in Europe and the US, among them the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Austrian State Theaters of Linz and Bregenz, the Bloomsbury Theater London, the Guggenheim Museum and the Miller Theater in New York. Since the mid-1990s, he has committed his efforts to discovering, preserving and presenting the works of oft-forgotten musicians and writers who suffered under the Nazi regime. Mr. von Leïtis’ honors include the Knight’s Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the New York Theatre Club Prize in 1985 for his direction of Bertolt Brecht’s Jewish Wife. He is the Chairman of the Erwin Piscator Award and an Advisor for the Ullmann Foundation London, for the Jewish Music Institute London, and for the Nietzsche Forum Munich. Dan Franklin Smith has been working with Elysium since 1996 and became its Music Director in 2005. Under his musical direction Egon Lustgarten’s opera Dante in Exile received its world premiere at the Elysium Festival Bernried 2005. He conceived various Musical-Literary Collages, such as A Crack in the Creation and New Beginnings: Fragments of an Era. In the past years he regularly gave piano solo recitals at the Elysium Festival Bernried. In 2004, he recorded two piano concerti (a premiere) by the Swiss late-romantic composer Hans Huber with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra. In the US he has appeared as a soloist, chamber musician and vocal accompanist at such venues as the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Cleveland Museum, Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall, and the Savannah Music Festival. Michael Lahr studied philosophy in Munich and Paris and received his Master of Arts with a thesis on Michel Foucault’s Concept of Subjectivity. As dramaturge of Elysium he has unearthed the works of numerous composers who emigrated from their native countries under the pressure of the Nazi Regime. He also is the executive director of the Lahr von Leitis Archive & Academy. Founded 25 years ago in New York City, Elysium fosters artistic and academic dialogue, creative and intellectual exchange and friendship between the US and Europe. Since its founding Elysium’s special concern has been to unearth and present works of artists persecuted by the fascist regimes of the mid- 20th century. .

Large new movie theaters were built across from the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church, the Capitol und Ufa-Palast, and many new cafés made the Kurfürstendamm into Berlin’s avant-garde boulevard. Max Reinhardt’s theater became a major attraction along with bars, nightclubs, wine restaurants, Russian tearooms and dance halls, providing a hangout for Weimar’s young writers. But Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm is mostly famous for its revered literary cafés, Kranzler, Schwanecke and the most renowned, the Romanische Café in the impressive looking Romanische Haus across from the Memorial church.

This is the first time the work has been recorded using 3D audio processing. The recording was produced in cooperation with the German broadcaster Deutschlandfunk Kultur and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin at Berlin-Brandenburg Broadcasting’s large studio in Berlin under the direction of Stephan Frucht (Artistic Director of the Siemens Arts Program). The recording process was directed by Professor Thorsten Weigelt (Berlin University of Fine Arts) and the 3D immersive audio specialist Stefan Bock (IAN Munich). In addition to the Piano Concerto Opus 25, the new recording, which comprises an audio CD and Blu-ray, includes Ullmann’s piano sonatas No. 3 (1940) and No. 7 (1944), which were recorded by Annika Treutler in the Church of Jesus Christ in the Dahlem district of Berlin.     Der Auftakt 1920-1938 The Prague music journal Der Auftakt [The upbeat. AUF. Subtitle: “Musikblätter für die tschechoslowakische Republik;” from volume seven, issue two “Moderne Musikblätter”]1 appeared from December 1920 to April 1938.2 According to Felix Adler (1876-1928), music critic for the Prague journal Bohemia and editor of the first eight issues of AUF,3 the journal was formed out of the Musiklehrerzeitung [Journal for music teachers] (1913-16, organ of the Deutscher Musikpädagogischer Verband [German association for music pedagogy] in Prague) and was to be a general music journal with a modern outlook and with a concern for the interests of music pedagogues.4 Under its next editor, Erich Steinhard, AUF soon developed into one of the leading German-language modern music journals of the time and became the center of Czech-German musical collaboration in the Czechoslovakian Republic between the wars.5 Adolf Weißmann, eminent music critic from Berlin, writes: “Among the journals that avoid all distortions of perspective, the Auftakt stands at the front. It has gained international importance through the weight of its varied contributions and the clarity of mind of its main editor.”6 The journal stopped publication without prior announcement in the middle of volume eighteen, likely a result of the growing influence of Nazi Germany.7 AUF was published at first by Johann Hoffmanns Witwe, Prague, then, starting with the third volume in 1923, by the Auftaktverlag, a direct venture of the Musikpädagogischer Verband.8 The journal was introduced as a bimonthly publication, but except for the first volume appearing in twenty issues from December 1920 to the end of 1921, all volumes contain twelve monthly issues, many of them combined into double issues.9 The issues are undated, but a line with the date for the “Redaktionsschluss” [copy deadline], separating the edited content from the 1 Subtitles as given on the first paginated page of every issue.

Brecht was, first, a superior poet, with a command of many styles and moods. As a playwright he was an intensive worker, a restless piecer-together of ideas not always his own (The Threepenny Opera is based on John Gay's Beggar's Opera, and Edward II on Marlowe), a sardonic humorist, and a man of rare musical and visual awareness; but he was often bad at creating living characters or at giving his plays tension and shape. As a producer he liked lightness, clarity, and firmly knotted narrative sequence; a perfectionist, he forced the German theatre, against its nature, to underplay. As a theoretician he made principles out of his preferences--and even out of his faults. Until 1924 Brecht lived in Bavaria, where he was born, studied medicine (Munich, 1917-21), and served in an army hospital (1918). From this period date his first play, Baal (produced 1923); his first success, Trommeln in der Nacht (Kleist Preis, 1922; Drums in the Night); the poems and songs collected as Die Hauspostille (1927; A Manual of Piety, 1966), his first professional production (Edward II, 1924); and his admiration for Wedekind, Rimbaud, Villon, and Kipling. During this period he also developed a violently antibourgeois attitude that reflected his generation's deep disappointment in the civilization that had come crashing down at the end of World War I.

    UPTON, RADHA, D.M.A. Between Heaven and Earth: Viktor Ullmann‟s Steffen-Lieder Op.17. (2011) Directed by Dr. Andrew Harley. 92 pp. The life and the work of Austrian composer, conductor, pianist, and musical essayist Viktor Ullmann (1898-1944) were for many years largely lost to history. One factor that may well have contributed to this situation was that, being Jewish, he was among those who were persecuted and killed under the National Socialist regime during the Second World War. Only the persistent work of musicologists, mainly within the last twenty to thirty years, has been able to shed some light on the circumstances of his life. While much research has been done regarding Ullmann‟s life, the body of research focusing on his works is still fairly small. Ullmann‟s Lieder, in particular, have not been discussed to their full extent. The growing availability of his Lieder in print and on audio recordings expands the possibilities for further research. The present study discusses Ullmann‟s Sechs Lieder Op. 17 (1937), settings of poetry by the Swiss anthroposophic poet Albert Steffen (1884-1963). First, the paper familiarizes the reader with general aspects of Ullmann‟s life and work, his holistic Weltanschauung Anthroposophy, and his musical ideals. Second, it provides an overview of his Lieder, including his general knowledge and assessment of the human voice. Finally, after a brief introduction to both life and work of the poet, the study provides an interpretative analysis of the Steffen-Lieder in terms of Ullmann‟s musical language and his response to the poetry.

This is the case of the voices of composers and musicians interned in concentration camps during Nazism. In particular, my contribution intends to analyse Viktor Ullmann’s musical experience during his detention in the ghetto of Theresienstadt (Terezín in Czech), with specific reference to the oeuvre The Emperor of Atlantis, or Death Abdicates (Der Kaiser von Atlantis, oder die Tod-Verweigerung). This work is the best synthesis of the composer’s musical and life experiences, being an ethical manifesto of political and artistic resistance, with frequently occurring references to fragments of Degenerate Music (Entartete Musik). Viktor Ullmann reacts to the condition of displaced person – as many other protagonists of Lagermusik1 (music in the concentration camps) – through his dedication to music, developing a new compositive language and a philosophical thought, witnessed in the work Goethe und Ghetto, a true spiritual testament, also composed in Theresienstadt. Through his musical language, Ullmann expresses his fears, hopes, protests and tries to give shape, overcome and forget, even for a moment in time, the daily routine of the ghetto. Thus music becomes political language, a form of protest, of resistance. The oeuvre The Emperor of Atlantis has both characteristics featuring committed and not committed music: on the one hand music is a medium of political, social and moral scope, on the other it expresses the subjective aspect of political commitment, meaning the necessity and urgency to put into music a political protest.

Cahn, Ph.D Abstract An important set of works by Gideon Klein, the Three Songs Opus 1 (1940) is the subject of my DMA document. Klein, a Czech-Jewish pianist and composer, was twenty-five years old when he died in Fürstengrube camp, following an internment in the Terezín concentration camp. On the broad level, the compositions discussed in this document manifest a significant contribution to the musical canon of the twentieth-century repertoire. Yet, the choices of texts and musical expressions also suggest the possibility that these works respond to historical and personal events Klein experienced while composing them. The songs, set to texts by Goethe, Johann Klaj and Friedrich Hölderlin, portray a variety of scenes that involve few optimistic hints yet mainly they express melancholy, solitude, and uncertainty. Given the historical context of these compositions, the heart of my document focuses on the following question: How are the textual and musical expressions of melancholy and solitude in these songs are influenced by Klein’s own uncertainty and how do the manifold musical images of these songs coalesce in a historic testimony of this most horrific time? The dissertation begins by examining the works of the Viennese satirist and performer Karl Kraus and the German stage director Erwin Piscator in the 1920s. The second half moves on to contemporary artists Handspring Puppet Company, Ping Chong, and Charles L. Mee. Ultimately, in illustrating the documentary theatre’s close relationship with avant-gardism, this dissertation supports a broadened perspective on what documentary theatre can be and do and reframes discussion of the practice’s political efficacy by focusing on how documentaries enact ideological critiques through form and seek to reeducate the senses of audiences through pedagogies of reception.
