Cowboy Culture: From Black and White to Technicolor 6 July 2014 Prelude: “El Paso” by Marty Robbins Introduction, by Dave Cauffman This morning we look at how we were shaped by all those cowboy movies and TV shows we grew up with. It should be fun, with nostalgic songs and ballads that celebrate the romance of the west: wide-open, starry skies, and love discovered and lost. Preparing this took me way back, 60 years, to my childhood, when I was allowed to go watch Disney programs on our neighbor’s 11 inch black and white television. We would act out the roles we saw in the westerns, taking turns being the good guy, who always won, and the bad guy, who always died an elaborate and acrobatic death, from which he instantly recovered. We were all immortal then. Rev. Dennis will trace our path from those innocent and formative years to our more nuanced current situation. Song: “Home on the Range” by Brewster M. An Easterner who had never been West when he wrote Bar-20, Mulford and was a diligent researcher and eventually amassed a card file with more than 10,000 entries 1 covering numerous aspects of Western history such as geography, language and weapons. His first novel Bar-20 was followed by 27 more over the next 35 years, ending in 1941. His stories involved a unique blending of detective story ingredients and Arthurian and Darwinian motifs that remained faithful to his vision of the Old West. By the time he finished the series he was probably the most famous western writer in the first half of the twentieth century. From Mulford’s novels, the famous Hopalong Cassidy character emerged. Although Mulford visited the West only once in his life, he drew from his research combined with a rich imagination and used continuing characters such as Cassidy, Johnny Nelson, Buck Peters, and Mesquite Jenkins who went from youth to midlife to old age in his stories. -

For generations of American movie fans, the movie star Gabby Hayes personi ed the Old West. In real life, Gabby was an actor from New York who found the right role for his talents late in life. George Francis Hayes was born near Wellsville in Stannards, Allegany County, on May 7, 1885. He dropped out of high school at age 17 to become an actor. In vaudeville variety shows, and repertory theater companies, George learned to play a wide variety of character types. One of his specialties was a talkative old man he based on people he knew from Wellsville. In 1925, at age 40, Hayes brie y hit the big time in vaudeville. He did his old-man routine at the Palace, New York’s top vaudeville showcase, in the comedy skit “Spirit of ’76.” He made little impression, however, and never became a vaudeville star. Copyright Dickinson Research Center, Once Hollywood perfected sound lm in the National Cowboy & Western Heritage late 1920s, many stage actors believed that their Museum, Oklahoma City, OK trained speaking voices would make them stars in “talkies.” George Hayes went to Hollywood in 1929 and began working steadily in low-budget “B” pictures. After years playing many different character types, he earned good reviews as an old-timer in John Wayne westerns starting in 1933. In 1935 Hayes had an important supporting role in Hopalong Cassidy, based on Clarence E. Mulford’s popular western stories. The following year, Paramount Pictures signed Hayes to appear in a series of Hopalong Cassidy movies starring William Boyd. -

Stories of cowboys or gunfighters in the American Old West from the latter half of the 19th Century became the foundation for many western movies, radio programs, television shows, songs, books and yes, postcards that have been a part of American life for many years. With it came cowboys, cowgirls, movie stars, radio stars, TV stars and musicians. There may be varying claims to the first movie, but one of the very first movies ever produced was “The Horse in Motion” which was produced in 1878. The movie was made to answer the question “Are all four of a horse’s hooves ever off the ground at the same time while the horse is galloping.” The movie proved that the hooves were indeed off the ground and motion photography was born. The world’s earliest surviving motion-picture film showing actual consecutive action is entitled Roundhay Garden Scene from 1888. Even though it is 2.11 seconds long, the Guinness Book of Records has declared that it is the oldest film in existence. The first film cowboy star, “Broncho Billy” Anderson, whose first film was The Great Train Robbery released in 1903, played three roles in the silent western, which audiences loved and led to a successful filmmaking career. -
