St. Peter’s, Wexford Exact details will be forwarded to all the above teams in early September but please take note of the following; - The 19 School teams will be drawn in five groups of 3 and one group of 4. - The groups will be drawn as part of our Championship Launch in early October. Similar to last year, each team will have one home and one away game (pending distances) . - Dates for the group games are; Wed Nov 14th Wed Nov 21st Wed Nov 28th - 2 teams from each group will advance to Knockout Rd.1 - Knockout Rd.1 will be an open draw - Group Winners in one pot and Group Runners-Up in the other pot. Repeat pairings will be avoided. - Home Venues (pending distance) for the Group Winners. - 6 winners of Knockout Rd.1, along with 2 Group Teams will advance to make up the Quarter-Finals. - Knockout dates are; Rd. 1 – Sat., 19th Jan. Quarter Final – Sat., 16th Feb. Semi Final – Sat., 2nd March Final – Sat., 16th March The following Group Teams have also entered; 1. Drogheda Schools 2. Dundalk Schools 3. Louth Schools 4.     A Seed is Sown 1884-1900 (1) Before the GAA From the earliest times, the people of Ireland, as of other countries throughout the known world, played ball games'. Games played with a ball and stick can be traced back to pre-Christian times in Greece, Egypt and other countries. In Irish legend, there is a reference to a hurling game as early as the second century B.C., while the Brehon laws of the preChristian era contained a number of provisions relating to hurling. In the Tales of the Red Branch, which cover the period around the time of the birth of Christ, one of the best-known stories is that of the young Setanta, who on his way from his home in Cooley in County Louth to the palace of his uncle, King Conor Mac Nessa, at Eamhain Macha in Armagh, practised with a bronze hurley and a silver ball. On arrival at the palace, he joined the one hundred and fifty boys of noble blood who were being trained there and outhurled them all single-handed. He got his name, Cuchulainn, when he killed the great hound of Culann, which guarded the palace, by driving his hurling ball through the hound's open mouth. From the time of Cuchulainn right up to the end of the eighteenth century hurling flourished throughout the country in spite of attempts made through the Statutes of Kilkenny (1367), the Statute of Galway (1527) and the Sunday Observance Act (1695) to suppress it. Particularly in Munster and some counties of Leinster, it remained strong in the first half of the nineteenth century.

  • Bloody Sunday 100-Year Anniversary
    Today, we mark the 100-year anniversary of Bloody Sunday, 21st November 1920, when 14 people were killed by British forces in Croke Park at a Gaelic football match between Dublin and Tipperary. Seven people were shot dead on the field or on the terraces of Croke Park, five were shot and subsequently died in hospital and two others were trampled to death. The match took place in the middle of the Irish War of Independence which lasted between January 1919 and July 1921. The events of Croke Park on the afternoon of 21st November 1920 were a British reprisal for that morning’s events when Michael Collins’ Squad (or “twelve apostles”) executed 15 British spies (“G-men”), operating out of Dublin Castle, known as the Cairo Gang. The exhibition match, part of the “Gaelic Sunday” acts of defiance against British rule which were initiated by the GAA two years earlier, was only roughly ten minutes in when over a dozen trucks filled with Black and Tans, Auxiliaries and RIC approached Croke Park from the Canal End. The occupants ran through the turnstiles and proceeded to fire rounds indiscriminately at the crowd and at the players. Panic ensued and along with the fatalities there were a further sixty people lying seriously wounded. Because of the county match not involving Tyrone, it is unlikely that there was anyone one from our Parish in Croke Park that day. However, we can ask ourselves several questions regarding the local GAA perspective on that day’s tragic events - Are there any club links to Bloody Sunday? What was the local reaction to Bloody Sunday? What was happening in our Parish at this time? Club Links to Bloody Sunday Perhaps the best known of the victims of Bloody Sunday is Michael (Mick) Hogan who was the sole player killed that day.

    PROGRAMME PLUS – VOLUME 1, NUMBER 4, APRIL 29 th , 2016 Collectors young and old, the newer additions and the veterans of the hobby, are very welcome to the fourth edition of Programme Plus which comes at the end of a month featuring five rather than four Fridays. That leaves an extra week of material to consider, so I’ll get into the content without any further delay! PROGRAMME OF THE MONTH: I pinpointed my likely award winner for April very early in the month - on the first Saturday in fact when I travelled to the Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow to buy copies of the souvenir programme for the 1916 Carlow hurling and football finals re-enactment taking place later that day in Netwatch Cullen Park. Bagenalstown played Carlow-Graigue in hurling while Tullow took on Tinryland in football, and it was Carlow’s special way of celebrating the centenary. It’s always wonderful to come across something different to adorn a collection, and for €3 the organisers produced a 20-page programme very much in keeping with the way things were one hundred years ago. The newspaper font of the time was used throughout to give it an authentic feel, on a faded brown background with a similar purpose in mind. Page two features a report on the 1916 football final, a 1-9 to 0-5 victory for Tullow over Tinryland. Eamonn Byrne contributes three pages on what the G.A.A. was like in Tinryland in 1916, and then there’s two pages apiece of pen pictures on the Tinryland and Tullow panels.

Seán received 625 points in his Uí Mhuirí team. Ruairi received 625 points in the Leaving Cert and is studying Financial Maths and Actuarial Leaving Cert and is studying Dentistry in UCC. Science in UCC. Remembering Bloody Sunday is of the utmost importance to us here at the Green, as we acknowledge how the GAA has contributed to BTYS ENTRIES our cultural, social and sporting heritage. The changes that have taken place in society over that time have indeed been monumental. The areas of transport, communication and technology have truly undergone a revolution over those years. We have made advances in so many fields but one of the greatest advances that we have made in this country has been in participation in education. This is particularly so since the advent of free secondary education in the late 1960s. While many par- ents might scoff at the term “free”, particularly having totted up the cost of back-to-school books, supplies and uniforms, the fact remains that since that political decision, going to second level school and completing second level education has become the norm and not the exception.
