A Seed is Sown 1884-1900 (1) Before the GAA From the earliest times, the people of Ireland, as of other countries throughout the known world, played ball games'. Games played with a ball and stick can be traced back to pre-Christian times in Greece, Egypt and other countries. In Irish legend, there is a reference to a hurling game as early as the second century B.C., while the Brehon laws of the preChristian era contained a number of provisions relating to hurling. In the Tales of the Red Branch, which cover the period around the time of the birth of Christ, one of the best-known stories is that of the young Setanta, who on his way from his home in Cooley in County Louth to the palace of his uncle, King Conor Mac Nessa, at Eamhain Macha in Armagh, practised with a bronze hurley and a silver ball. On arrival at the palace, he joined the one hundred and fifty boys of noble blood who were being trained there and outhurled them all single-handed. He got his name, Cuchulainn, when he killed the great hound of Culann, which guarded the palace, by driving his hurling ball through the hound's open mouth. From the time of Cuchulainn right up to the end of the eighteenth century hurling flourished throughout the country in spite of attempts made through the Statutes of Kilkenny (1367), the Statute of Galway (1527) and the Sunday Observance Act (1695) to suppress it. Particularly in Munster and some counties of Leinster, it remained strong in the first half of the nineteenth century.

  • Irish Schools Athletics Champions 1916-2015 Updated June 15 2015
Irish Schools Athletics Champions 1916-2015 Updated June 15 2015 In February 1916 Irish Amateur Athletic Association (IAAA) circularised the principal schools in Ireland regarding the advisability of holding Schoolboys’ Championships. At the IAAA’s Annual General Meeting held on Monday 3rd April, 1916 in Wynne’s Hotel, Dublin, the Hon. Secretary, H.M. Finlay, referred to the falling off in the number of affiliated clubs due to the number of athletes serving in World War I and the need for efforts to keep the sport alive. Based on responses received from schools, the suggestion to hold Irish Schoolboys’ Championships in May was favourably considered by the AGM and the Race Committee of the IAAA was empowered to implement this project. Within a week a provisional programme for the inaugural athletics meeting to be held at Lansdowne Road on Saturday 20th May, 1916 had been published in newspapers, with 7 events and a relay for Senior and 4 events and a relay for Junior Boys. However, the championships were postponed "due to the rebellion" and were rescheduled to Saturday 23rd September, 1916, at Lansdowne Road. In order not to disappoint pupils who were eligible for the championships on the original date of the meeting, the Race Committee of the IAAA decided that “a bona fide schoolboy is one who has attended at least two classes daily at a recognised primary or secondary school for three months previous to 20 th May, except in case of sickness, and who was not attending any office or business”. The inaugural championships took place in ‘quite fine’ weather.

November 2015 NEWSLETTER c/o ACCS, 10H Centrepoint Business Park, Oak Drive, Dublin 12 Foreword Autumn 2015 has been positive so far with growth in the economy finally filtering down Officers to small businesses and training providers that depend on the disposable income of ordinary people. Feedback from schools around the country indicates a noticeable increase in registrations and a return to growth in demand for hobby and leisure courses. Our Conference this year will focus on assessing the damage done to our educational sector during the times of retrenchment and formulating a position from where we can rebuild our sector to a point where it can once again offer a quality service to an ever- changing and more demanding public. The conference is also an important opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas with other directors experiencing the same problems and issues as other schools. This conference is the only professional development opportunity available to Directors of Fintan Kemple, NACED Chairperson [email protected] Adult Education and I would encourage schools to send Assistant Directors to the 087 643 6482 conference along with the Director of Adult Education. The attendance included John Moloney, Noel Morris, John Costigan, Pat Moroney, Seamus J., King and Michael TO’Meara. Seamus McCarthy was unable to be present. At the outset John Moloney was unanimously appointed chairman amd Michael O’Meara secretary. The chairman outlined the aims of the group, which were chiefly to honour annually persons over 70 years of age, who had given significant service to the G.A.A. in whatever capacity - player, official, groundsman, jersey carrier, tea maker, referee, umpire, etc. A sample of a framed certificate, which was presented annually in Dublin, was shown by the chairman to the meeting and the secretary undertook to get quotations for same. It was agreed that approximately 40 annual presentations would be made, i.e. an average of 10 per division. The consensus was that the general public should be asked to nominate suitable persons and justify why they were considered worthy. It was agreed that the presentations would be made in Brú Ború, Cashel on November 16th or 23rd and that the evening’s programme would consist of a chat, light refreshments and entertainment before the presentations. It was also agreed that the wives of the recipients be invited to the presentations.

  • Bloody Sunday 100-Year Anniversary
Today, we mark the 100-year anniversary of Bloody Sunday, 21st November 1920, when 14 people were killed by British forces in Croke Park at a Gaelic football match between Dublin and Tipperary. Seven people were shot dead on the field or on the terraces of Croke Park, five were shot and subsequently died in hospital and two others were trampled to death. The match took place in the middle of the Irish War of Independence which lasted between January 1919 and July 1921. The events of Croke Park on the afternoon of 21st November 1920 were a British reprisal for that morning’s events when Michael Collins’ Squad (or “twelve apostles”) executed 15 British spies (“G-men”), operating out of Dublin Castle, known as the Cairo Gang. The exhibition match, part of the “Gaelic Sunday” acts of defiance against British rule which were initiated by the GAA two years earlier, was only roughly ten minutes in when over a dozen trucks filled with Black and Tans, Auxiliaries and RIC approached Croke Park from the Canal End. The occupants ran through the turnstiles and proceeded to fire rounds indiscriminately at the crowd and at the players. Panic ensued and along with the fatalities there were a further sixty people lying seriously wounded. Because of the county match not involving Tyrone, it is unlikely that there was anyone one from our Parish in Croke Park that day. However, we can ask ourselves several questions regarding the local GAA perspective on that day’s tragic events - Are there any club links to Bloody Sunday? What was the local reaction to Bloody Sunday? What was happening in our Parish at this time? Club Links to Bloody Sunday Perhaps the best known of the victims of Bloody Sunday is Michael (Mick) Hogan who was the sole player killed that day.
