Bennett Library Simon Fraser University Bumaby, BC, Canada Abstract This study explores the social contours and the talk within contemporary women's book clubs. The approach is interdisciplinary, drawing on theories of interpretive community, feminist epistemology, and cultural studies to illustrate the social relations of the groups as more than a sum of its readers. Ethnographic and survey methods are blended in an original interpretation of the reading motivations, practices, pleasures of five Canadian reading groups and more than 252 readers found on line. An account of the descriptive, normative and ideological concepts of book club community, the work supplies an important gap in studies of women's reading experiences in Canada. This dissertation argues: (1) that book clubs are social structures in which women are able to articulate and valorise their experiences thereby demonstrating social agency, and (2) that there is an interpretive community dimension to a reading group that unfolds over time. The readers recognise the importance of women "trusted others" in introducing them to reading, the importance of pushing personal tastes boundaries within safe spaces, and the benefit of the liberal humanist vision of learning outside of the perceived constraints of gender language, politics or power. The groups form and exist around shared genre tastes and interpretive preferences. The acquisition and negotiation of cultural competence works differently in the virtual clubs than in the face-to-face groups. Resistance is more evident in the face-to- face groups than it is in a virtual club, where group membership is more fluid. This study finds rather than a kind of essentialist "sisterhood" that provides only minimal resistance to patriarchal structures, there is instead a creation of space for agency, and utopian mutual affirmation of badges of wisdom that is important to clubs in providing enrichment of daily lives. Oral and virtual culture can and does enhance literate culture, even if it does not conform to traditional conceptions of political mobilisation. The surprise of this study is that while it is useful to examine the book club as a genre of collective women's action, it is also worthwhile to examine the "book club" type title, as a new form of social expression.     Book History in Australia since 1950 Katherine Bode Preprint: Chapter 1, Oxford History of the Novel in English: The Novel in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the South Pacific since 1950. Edited by Coral Howells, Paul Sharrad and Gerry Turcotte. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2017. Publication of Australian novels and discussion of this phenomenon have long been sites for the expression of wider tensions between national identity and overseas influence characteristic of postcolonial societies. Australian novel publishing since 1950 can be roughly divided into three periods, characterized by the specific, and changing, relationship between national and non-national influences. In the first, the 1950s and 1960s, British companies dominated the publication of Australian novels, and publishing decisions were predominantly made overseas. Yet a local industry also emerged, driven by often contradictory impulses of national sentiment, and demand for American-style pulp fiction. In the second period, the 1970s and 1980s, cultural nationalist policies and broad social changes supported the growth of a vibrant local publishing industry. At the same time, the significant economic and logistical challenges of local publishing led to closures and mergers, and—along with the increasing globalization of publishing—enabled the entry of large, multinational enterprises into the market. This latter trend, and the processes of globalization and deregulation, continued in the final period, since the 1990s. Nevertheless, these decades have also witnessed the ongoing development and consolidation of local publishing of Australian novels— including in new forms of e-publishing and self-publishing—as well as continued government and social support for this activity, and for Australian literature more broadly.

It demonstrates the student’s understanding of the course objectives, serving as documentation that he or she is ready for the demands of the transfer institution and workplace in regard to managing information efficiently, analyzing and evaluating it accurately, and communicating it effectively. The paper’s primary purpose is to examine an issue from multiple perspectives and reach a research-driven conclusion based on the analysis and evaluation of evidence that represents those perspectives. Each claim the paper makes must have supporting evidence from multiple sources which are credible and relevant. Prior to the drafting process the student is required to compose a research proposal that identifies the focus of the research along with strategies and sources that will be employed. An annotated bibliography is also required. One Student’s Research Paper Experience For her research paper topic, Haley Akeson and her classmates are asked to choose a historical event and argue a claim about its consequences, supporting the claim with evidence that might change or alter the audience’s point of view. As one possibility for focusing the paper, Haley is encouraged to choose a Hollywood film that focuses on a historical issue and argue how accurately or ineffectively the film addresses the issue. After some deliberation, Haley chooses the film, Memoirs of a Geisha, released by Columbia pictures in 2005 and based on author Arthur Golden’s novel, published in 1997. In her proposal written prior to her research, Haley expresses her reasons for selecting her topic noting the misunderstanding that varying perspectives often present: Fascination with the differences of culture has always been a part of my life.

Jack Rabinovitch1 Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch, the Giller Prize was established to honour Rabinovitch’s late wife, the journalist Doris Giller, who had died from cancer a year earlier.2 Since its inception, the prize has served to recognize excellence in Canadian English-language fiction, including both novels and short stories. Initially the award was endowed to provide an annual cash prize of $25,000.3 In 2005, the Giller Prize partnered with Scotiabank to create the Scotiabank Giller Prize. For a few years after reading it, Steven Spielberg worked on a film adaptation version of the book and was attached as the director. Being busy with other projects, Spielberg decided to drop the director title in early 2002. The project had a few other director candidates during 2002 and 2003 including Spike Jonze and Kimberley Peirce, and eventually settled with Rob Marshall (Chicago). Spielberg is now one of the producers of the film. Memoirs of a Geisha, published in 1997, is Arthur Golden's debut novel. The bestselling novel was a long time in the making, Golden spent more than ten years on the novel, throwing out the first two drafts before finding his "voice" in the first person account that was a publishing success. Golden was born in 1957 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to a family of journalists. His parents, Ben and Ruth, published the Chattanooga Times, and in the early 2000 his cousin, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, published the New York Times. Golden's parents divorced when he was eight, and his father died five years later.

    Book Club Kits Book Club Kits are created from the Ransom Library’s Book Discussion Group’s previous book talks. After a book has been discussed by the group, its multiple copies become a book kit. In each Book Club Kit, you will find: • 6 to 10 copies of the book • One copy of "Good books lately" • One page of questions for discussion • One page of guidelines Borrowing Guidelines: • Book Club Kits are open to all Ransom District Library cardholders. • Book Club Kits may be reserved. • A Book Club Kit may be checked out for eight weeks. • Kits may NOT be renewed. • A patron may check out only one kit at a time. • The person who checks out the Book Club Kit is financially responsible for returning the entire kit. • Please check the number of books before borrowing. Returning Guidelines: • Please check the number of books before returning kit to the library. • Book Club Kits must be returned inside the library. They may not go into the drop box. • Borrowers will be charged $1.00 per day for an overdue Book Club Kit. • Replacement cost of an entire Book Club Kit is $100.00 • Replacement cost of individual parts of the bag will depend on the cost of each particular item.
