Thanksgiving is less than a week away and if the advertisers are to be believed, the Christmas shopping season is already in full-swing. Today’s readings stand in stark contrast to all this worldly merry-making, warning us of dark times ahead and our inevitable judgment day. How should a modern-day disciple and steward respond to these VHHPLQJFRQWUDGLFWLRQV".HHSWKLVTXHVWLRQLQPLQGDVZH take a look at the Word of God presented to us this week. The First Reading, from Daniel, describes a time “unsurpassed in distress since nations began” and warns that “many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake; some shall live forever, and others shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace.” The Second Reading, from Hebrews, speaks of Christ who “waits until his enemies are made his footstool.” Even the Gospel Acclamation is ominous: “Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to stand before the Son of Man.” In the Gospel passage, from Mark, Jesus describes a time of tribulation after which “the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.” Sobering messages indeed. It’s enough to make you lose your appetite for that second piece of pumpkin pie. But IRUDFRPPLWWHGGLVFLSOHRI&KULVWWKHVHPHVVDJHVDUHVLPSO\DKHDOWK\ DQGYLYLG UHPLQGHURIZK\RXUILUVW priority is God Himself. For when we have firmly established for ourselves as individuals, as a family and as a parish that we will give to God the first and best portion of our Time, Talent, and Treasure, the warnings we read in the Scriptures today need not cause us alarm. In fact, we can receive them as an encouragement — to “Keep Calm and Steward On,” no matter what comes our way. One of the blessings of a stewardship way of life is this: In challenging times, whether in our homes or workplaces, or even our beloved Church itself, we can take great comfort in knowing we have a concrete plan to keep our priorities in right order. And when we put God first in all aspects of our lives, we will experience the peace that He gives that surpasses all understanding. &RS\ULJKW²&DWKROLF6WHZDUGVKLS&RQVXOWDQWV,QF 2QWKH:D\+RPH In today’s Gospel, we look forward to the day of Jesus’ second coming. We do not know the day or the hour of his coming; only God knows.

Gregory Schneider and Rebecca Klatch emphasized the role collegiate lib- ertarians played in moving youths to the Right. Rick Perlstein, focusing on conservatives who came of age during World War II, argued that the New Right wedded southern white racism to midwestern conspiracy-obsessed anti-Communism. For his part, Dan Carter contended that Alabama governor George Wallace's racist politics migrated north where they found a receptive audi- ence in urban Catholics.' Samuel Freedman chronicled the ideological evolution of sev- eral generations of northern Catholics as they moved into the GOP in reaction to black protest, mounting urban crime, and the Vietnam War. Ronald Formisano, Jonathan Rieder, and Thomas Sugrue, in their studies of Boston, New York, and Detroit, respectively, gave less attention to the Vietnam War, emphasizing the racial attitudes of working-class Catholics and unionists. In their studies of the Americans for Democratic Action (ADA), an organization that anti-Communist Democrats such as Minneapolis mayor Hubert Humphrey had helped create in I947, Radosh and Gillon examined the middle-class activists who rejected America's anti-Communist foreign policy and the racial conservatism of many unionists.

Ubi Episcopus: A Conversation with Donald Cardinal Wuerl in the Fiftieth Anniversary Year of St. Paul Seminary, Pittsburgh Alexander J. Schrenk Ubi episcopus, ibi ecclesia. “Wherever the bishop is, there is the Church.” These words of Saint Ignatius of Antioch in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans are intended to make a theological point about the hierarchical unity of the Church. A practical corollary of that spiritual reality, however, is that no one has as broad and deep an experience of a particular local Church – from the administrative and pastoral, fiscal and spiritual – than its bishop. For that reason, when Father Joseph Mele, Father Michael Conway, John Bates, and I met last summer to discuss plans to put together a first-ever, fiftieth-anniversary history of St. Paul Seminary in Crafton, we knew that we needed to have the input of the one man who, better than anyone currently living, has the broadest experience of the institution. That man is His Eminence, Donald Cardinal Wuerl. He was a seminarian for the diocese when the seminary was founded by then Bishop John Wright in 1965, Pittsburgh Seminarian Donald Wuerl he served as its vice-rector and then rector from 1980 until 1985, and he meets Pope Paul VI (1964) oversaw its administration as bishop of the diocese from 1988 until 2006. Source: Alexander Schrenk Because I study at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, I was given the task of interviewing His Eminence. As a cardinal and a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for Bishops, he is often in Rome.
