Before and After Exile: The Music of Protest in Brazil Cynthia Machado Campos 1. Reactions to the Dictatorship The Brazilian military dictatorship, established as a result of a coup d’état in March 1964, prompted a strong social reaction especially amongst the younger generation of Brazilians. Many students of Brazilian universities took to the streets to demonstrate against the government. The year 1968 was a decisive year in which political movements and demonstrations against the military regime emerged all over Brazil, showing widespread dissatisfaction with the military government. Most leaders of the political movement were young Before and After Exile: The Music of Protest in Brazil 2 people, aged between 18 and 30, as were the majority of the participants. The rebellion of these young people was generally regarded as a fight against the political dictatorship. Some of them adopted violence and used guns. The military government responded to their violence with more violence, imprisonment, censorship and torture, evidence of which can be seen in many testimonies and books written by ex-militants and ex-prisoners from the dictatorship period1. The big youth demonstrations at the end of 1968 meant inevitable confrontation with the police and resulted in stricter laws by the military government, such as AI5 (Institutional Act number 5)2. Others protesters, mainly artists and musicians, participated in the movement against the military dictatorship, some of them writing their songs and lyrics Cynthia Machado Campos 3 _______________________________________________________ as a call to arms against the government. One example is the song known as ‘Caminhando’ [Walking], also known as ‘Pra Não Dizer que Não Falei de Flores’ [Don’t say I didn’t speak about flowers], by Geraldo Vandré, which was released in 1968. -

Website Preface As a lot of people reading this will already know, the first book published by S.T. Publishing was Spirit Of ‘69 - A Skinhead Bible back in 1991. Originally, a mainstream publisher in London, UK, was going to release it, but after a few months of pissing me about, I decided to do it myself. At the time, I knew sweet Fanny Adams about the publishing game, but it’s amazing what you can achieve when a lorry turns up at your front door with a mountain of books and you know every last penny you have (and then some) is riding on the fact that you can shift them. I wrote Spirit Of ‘69 - A Skinhead Bible not because I think I’m some sort of expert on skinheads, but because I passionately believed that the history of the cult, warts and all, had to be written from the inside. Before Spirit Of ‘69, there had only ever been one skinhead book that sought to act as a guide to the skinhead cult – Nick Knight’s Skinhead (Omnibus Press). First published in 1982, it was largely meant as a vehicle for photographer Nick Knight’s skinhead portraits, but was padded out with a few pages on skinhead origins, music, dress, behaviour and the like. What really makes it worth having though is the section on fashion by Jim Ferguson, something that to this day is held in very high regard by skinheads all over the world, and particularly by those who choose to dress in the original skinhead style. -

Anarchy in the UK: the birth of British punk When Sex Pistols guitarist, Steve Jones, called television presenter BiJ] Grundy a 'fucking rotter' on live TV, he sparked one of Britain's biggest media furores of the 1970s. In December 1976 the Sex Pistols were still a virtually unknown band, but luck had come their way when rock super stars Queen cancelled a TV appearance on an early evening news show. The Pistols were hastily lined up as replacements, ostensibly promoting their debut single, 'Anarchy in the UK'. However, baited by Grundy, the TV show's cantankerous host, the band sneered, swore and made themselves as disruptive as possible. The interview was barely ninety seconds long, and the band's insults were jokey, but the impact was seismic. The follow ing morning the tabloid press frothed with outrage. A flurry of histrionic headlines - 'Poul Mouthed Yobs', 'The Pilth And The pury,l - cast the Pistols as social pariahs, while promoters cancelled their concerts, radio stations blacklisted their single and the band were unceremoniously dropped by their record company, EMI. Paradoxically, rather than prematurely aborting the Sex Pistols' career, the debacle threw the band into a media spotlight that sustained both their success and their notoriety. Signed to Virgin Records by an enterprising Richard Branson, the Pistols' second single, 'God Save the Queen', fuelled further press uproar. -
