RECOMMENDATIONS That the Education Operational Delivery Committee: - 2.1 Note the outcome of the 2019 annual review for transport and safe routes to school for Lochside Academy. That the Operational Delivery Committee: - 2.2 Approves the removal of 1 vehicle from the service 21, Cove/Charleston – Lochside Academy. 2.3 Approves the removal of the service 22A, Leggart/Balnagask – Lochside Academy, from Leggart so that the service starts and ends at Balnagask; and 2.4 Agrees that no further changes are required -

From its ancient origins to medieval burghs and King Robert The Bruce, from the Jacobite connections to the expansion in the Edwardian and Victorian times, the ‘Silver City by the Golden Sands’ has a long, important, and interesting history with many of its people contributing to the wider world. The city started out as three separate royal burghs – Old Aberdeen, New Aberdeen and Torry plus the parish of Woodside – which expanded and merged together to form the city as a whole. There was a major expansion in the Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian eras as the city made its first fortunes based on fishing, granite quarrying and shipbuilding and many of the grand buildings were built during these times. It also included the main thoroughfare, Union Street, which was raised up away from the mud and dirt and built on a series of bridges – it was such a major project it almost bankrupted the city! From couper to farmers’ cooperative: livestock fairs and markets in north-east Scotland from 1800 to 1900* livestock fairs and markets in north-east scotland by Richard Perren Abstract In 1800 local livestock fairs and markets in north-east Scotland were traditional open markets held at fixed times of the year. Their number increased in the first half of the nineteenth century as the region’s meat industry developed to supply the growing demand of the Scottish and English markets. After 1850 and the appearance of the railways the number of livestock markets grew further and localities competed with each other, sometimes fiercely, to capture the benefits of a new livestock market. These markets, where deals were made privately between individuals, were dominated by local butchers and livestock dealers. This changed from 1870 as open markets gave way to regular livestock auction markets (or marts) conducted by professional auctioneers. Farmers believed that auctions served their interests better than open markets as sales were conducted quickly and in greater comfort, and they could also judge whether buyers were competing fairly. Farmers from the north east became so enthusiastic about this form of sale that they took advantage of the nineteenth-century Company Acts to float their own joint stock limited auction companies, and also take over some of the existing family-run livestock auction markets. In spite of some opposition from butchers and cattle dealers, the auction markets were all very successful and by 1900 had largely replaced the traditional fairs and markets. Scotland in 1500 was a poor country with a small population and a backward, underdeveloped economy. -

Upsizing refers to going large, adding sides or extras and taking meal deals – it’s causing people to eat and drink unnecessary extra calories, sugar and fat, in many cases without even thinking about it. Around 45% of Scots don’t think about the extra calories or impact on their health from upsizing: going large, buying meal deals or adding sides and extras. The campaign highlights that these additions and extras we are adding to our daily routines aren’t needed, and we can all benefit from just saying no to offers of better deals more regularly. The important developments of the past 10 or 20 years are coming to fruition. All of the main forms of public transport - bus, rail and air - are, or will shortly be, operated by the private sector. Public transport operators can now respond to consumer demand, and secure investment to meet that demand, more freely than ever before. The modern strategic road network which Scotland needs, with a core of motorway and near-motorway roads, is near completion. Journey times between Scotland's cities, and from various parts of Scotland to England, are roughly half what they were 20 years ago. As we look forward from these achievements we need to ask what people and businesses in Scotland want for the future. We see more clearly than ever some central tensions in this. SCOTTISH ARCHIVES 2011 Volume 17 © The Scottish Records Association Scottish Archival Education: the perspective of the Centre for Archive and Information Studies, Dundee Patricia Whatley Formal postgraduate archival education, based in Scotland, has been available since 2004. However, the current academic programmes in Dundee and Glasgow were preceded by much discussion on the form it might take and how it should best be provided. Throughout the previous two decades the subject was led largely by the Scottish Record Office (now National Records of Scotland). Senior staff debated how archivists based in Scotland, and unable to travel to study at existing academic programmes located during that period in London, Liverpool, Dublin, Aberystwyth and Bangor, might gain professional knowledge and expertise, and a formal academic qualification. The discussions during the 1990s resulted in the development of the Scottish Archive Training School, a two-week training school led by the late Donald Galbraith, which introduced and taught subjects including Latin, Scottish palaeography, accounting records and basic arrangement and description. Up to that time, the Scottish Record Office had provided its own staff with legal training at the University of Edinburgh, in addition to the main archival skills mentioned above.1 In the same period the Society of Archivists UK (now Archive & Records Association UK & Ireland (ARA)) established a Diploma in Archive Administration by distance learning, which required students to complete modules in a number of subjects and submit assignments to tutors, who were normally archival practitioners. Both developments went some way to providing basic skills and knowledge to archivists but they were limited.
