Donnelly from the University of Notre GO Dame. A 2010 recipient of a USITT Fellowship, Mr. Donnelly has spent the past eight years researching Mr. Heeley's design work in numerous archives in SIGHTLINES ARCHIVE » Canada, the United States, and England.

Mr. Heeley began his design career in 1948 at 17 at The Stratford Memorial Theatre (now the Royal Shakespeare Company) in Stratford-upon-Avon, England for the Christmas production of Toad of Toad Hall. He then served as the costume design assistant to stage director Peter Brook for Titus Andronicus starring the husband and wife acting team of Laurence Olivier and Vivian Leigh. In 1956, Mr. Heeley designed the costumes for the Stratford-upon-Avon production of Hamlet. He quickly rose to fame and recognition as the brightest and most promising designer in England. Immediately following Hamlet, he was brought to London to design the sets and costumes for the Sadler's Well ballet Solitaire. Within a year, he was hired by the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada to design the costumes and scenery for Hamlet, the inaugural production in the Festival Theatre.

In a career spanning more than 64 years, Mr. Heeley has designed costumes, scenery, and properties for opera, ballet, and theatre companies on four continents. In 1997, Mr. Heeley received the USITT Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2011, Mr. Heeley received his third Tony Award for the costume design for The Importance of Being Earnest on Broadway, the final show of his illustrious career. Desmond Heeley: From Toad to Tony will give USITT members the rare opportunity to see some of the earliest of Mr. Heeley’s costume and scenic designs as well as the transformation of his distinctive rendering style.

USITT members will be able to view many of Mr. Heeley’s original renderings in a gallery display at Stage Expo. A selection of his The Taming of the Shrew costume and scenic designs from the University of Notre Dame Collection as well as examples from his personal portfolio will be available for members to admire and view close up.

NEWS & NOTICES: News From Lea Asbell-Swanger, USITT President Election Results & Call for What Does It Mean to Be a Member? Nominations Pilbrow Wins Golden Pen What does it mean to be a member? Announcements More specifically what does it mean to be a member of USITT? I admit that I Tom Young Wins Founders Award started thinking about the meaning of Design Needed for PQ2015 membership after seeing a draft of our Executive Director’s message for Member Benefit – A Present this issue of Sightlines. While he and I have not heretofore shared a theme, Desmond Heeley Honored at least not intentionally, this particular Scenofest/WSD News topic seemed large enough to survive The Last Word - SansDisc a treatment by both of us. NEWS FROM: Membership is simply, and somewhat annoyingly, defined as “the state of being Around the Institute a member,” which sent me in search of clarification on the meaning of Contributing Members “member.” According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a member is “a USITT's President distinct part of a whole.” If the “whole” is an organization, the definition expands Sustaining Members to “a person who belongs to a group or organization.” It’s mildly interesting to note that other “wholes” include everything from mathematic sets to the bodies Executive Director of humans, animals, and plants, but I digress. Regional Sections CONFERENCE As I thought about this definition with respect to USITT, I focused on two things: & STAGE EXPO: the sense of belonging and being a distinct part. At first these concepts seemed Stage Expo Setting in conflict. How does one “belong” to anything and still remain unique? Of Records course, I had hardly formed the question in my mind when I realized that the Spotlight on Station House membership of USITT embodies that idea better than most. While we are united Opera by our association with design, production, and technology within the performing Regional Tours arts and entertainment industry, we each still have the opportunity to tailor our Architecture News membership experience in a very personal way. GO particular profession, the interests of individuals engaged in that profession, and the public interest. The key to the success of this type of member is the active SIGHTLINES ARCHIVE » participation and contribution each one makes to his/her individual experience, which in turn, provides benefits to the organization and ultimately the profession. In other words, members get more out of it because they put more into it.

The member who joins and then waits for benefits to be thrust upon him/her certainly has opportunities, but like the student who only attempts to meet the minimum requirement of a class, he/she should not expect a maximum return. The point is, a member’s investment has to be more than the price of that membership if he/she intends to reap the highest benefit.

Part of the reason that USITT has not had to raise the membership rates repeatedly is because it has always, and proudly, relied on the willingness of dues-paying members to invest personal time and sometimes additional money in order to continue or expand the work of the association.

Yes, sometimes it’s hard to find personal time and/or extra funds in a world where employers are requiring employees to do more with less and the cost of everything is on the rise. But the alternative is to decrease the collective voice with which we speak about our profession both to those employers and the public.

Yes, relying on volunteers means that the processes and responsiveness of systems will not be consistent and things will slip through cracks when the “real job” demands priority. But part of making the volunteer commitment is to first be realistic about what is personally possible and asking for help when needed. For me, this is a significant key to the expansion of the invested members. Those who are already actively engaged have a huge responsibility to invite the personal commitment to action of the minimal member, who sometimes is afraid to offer to invest for fear of having to do it all alone.

As the new year begins, I encourage each of you to consider which kind of member you want to be, but do so in conversation with colleagues. If they are already members, the discussion may encourage a higher level of investment in USITT. If they are not members, the discussion may tempt them to consider an investment in USITT and in themselves.

GO member companies that want to provide continuing education to people at all points in their careers. The cost of most of our new IT services is balanced by a SIGHTLINES ARCHIVE » resulting savings in time and operations. But all of these efficiencies have an end to their natural life spans.

As I write this, we all wait for our Congress to develop some plan to avoid the harsh effects of sequestration. By the time this is read, hopefully that will have happened, or we will all be in dire positions. While there is no immediate threat of harsh actions in the USITT world, the political debate raging has parallels in our organization. We must grow our services given to the members while trying to control the cost of membership. But just as the economy grows from people spending money on goods and services, our ability to grow those services is dependent on people joining. How much could USITT grow its services in 2013 and beyond if that membership number increased to 4,000?

I spend my week preaching the good news of USITT and what it has to offer. But that isn’t enough. I need the choir, those who are reading this article (especially if you’ve made it this far), to do the same.

It’s not just about getting your friends to join, but that is a start. You must also make sure the companies you do business with are aware of membership benefits. Thank corporations for being members and patronize them because of that membership.

Our corporate members give far more than their dues in training, discounts, and Stage Expo events. Learn the full scope of your member benefits and share the advantages with others. We are constantly trying to develop new benefits for our members. If you have ideas, contact Monica Merritt in the National Office. While we can’t make promises that the benefit will come through, we do make the effort to reach out and develop them.

As with any product, volume is key. By growing our membership numbers, we can oddly enough provide more services without raising dues. This is not some veiled threat of a dues increase. In fact, from my first year as a member, our dues have increased at less than the rate of inflation while our ability to serve and provide benefits has grown.

I still remember making that membership payment and always will. It is my goal and that of everyone in the USITT leadership and staff to provide the most value for your dollar. Those goods and services can grow when we all encourage others to be part of us. USITT is and will always be an organization with the membership at its core. Reach out and bring people in so that the Institute can grow and the value of your membership expand without the cost increasing.

GO The intersection and exploration of space, materials and performer are at the heart of every Station House Opera production. Early in its artistic journey, the SIGHTLINES ARCHIVE » company established a non-illusionistic, architecturally sculptural approach to space that supported its post-dramatic style of theatre in a very honest, immediate, and often comedic way. Performers and furniture were hoisted into the air, sometimes upside down, playing off one another in ways that moved the meaning of a piece beyond plot and character and into a wholly unique theatrical world.

Pieces that are currently underway explore themes such as backwards action, thinking and emotion, and performance of thought, which is described as “making aspects of perception and thought sculptural; a kind of tangible mental architecture.” Recent efforts have returned to more intimate settings but achieve a kind of theatrical cyber scale through the use of technology. Characterized as “telematic” theatre, Maynard-Smith’s new works employ internet to transmit images and sound between two or more sites to create a shared global performance event.

This presentation of Station House Opera’s hybrid theatre of the real, the virtual, the intellectual and the imaginative is sure to fascinate and The Bastille Dances (1989) inform.
