    Dutch museum acquisitions (2015–19) supported by the Vereniging Rembrandt Dutch museum acquisitions (2015–19) supported by the Vereniging Rembrandt or over 135 years, the Vereniging Rembrandt has helped Dutch museums to acquire notable works of art for their collections.1 When it was established in 1883, its main concern was to retain Dutch old master paintings in the Netherlands, especially for the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. But it soon became clear that old masters had also to be brought back from elsewhere, and the Vereniging’s horizon was happily much expanded. FBetween 2015 and 2019 the Vereniging Rembrandt supported the acquisition of 142 objects as far apart in time and character as a ceremonial sword from the Middle Bronze Age (no.2), bought for the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden, and an installation of blown glass by Dale Chihuly made for the Groningen Museum in 2018 (no.35). Some sixty museums from all over the country benefited from these acquisitions, to which the Vereniging contributed over €23.9 million. In 2018–19 an exhibition at the Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, displaying a selection of around eighty acquisitions that had been supported by the Vereniging Rembrandt since 2009 was seen by over 100,000 visitors. An exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, in 2008–09 on the Vereniging’s first 125 years attracted over 300,000 visitors.2 In those ten years membership of the Vereniging rose from 9,000 to well over 16,000, and its reserves increased to over €50 million. When looking at the acquisitions supported over the past five years, it is clear that the original agenda of the Vereniging Rembrandt, to retain or repatriate important works of Dutch art, still informs much of its policy.

Leiden, the city where Rembrandt was born Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn remains the most famous artist of the Dutch Golden Age. It was in Leiden, his birthplace on July 15th 1606, that he fi rst started drawing, sketching and painting, and where he produced his fi rst masterpieces, where he developed most of his skills. Here, in the Golden Age, is where he stood out. It was the place where someone with ambition like Rembrandt should have been. There are still many remains from that Golden Age period like the Rapenburg mansions, St. Peter’s church and the 35 beguinages in the old town. In 2019, 350 years a er his death, we celebrate Rembrandt and his work in Leiden.

And while that might be open to debate, there is undeniably something that unites us when we collectively sit down on a Sunday night to watch the match of the week – it’s something we can all share. Another resource that certainly belongs to us all is our country’s museum collec- tions. Objects and stories – accounts from the past, often provided by private individuals – have been accumulated over the centuries and are now in the public domain. Museums have been designated by the government as the custodians of this public heritage, in order to carefully preserve it and make it accessible to a wide audience – both now and for future generations. These collections allow us to interpret the present and future by delving into the past. If you visit a museum, you’ll find that you always learn something, with the bonus of spending an enjoyable afternoon – alone, together with a friend, with family members or with your class. ‘Of everyone and for everyone?’ If museums belong to all of us, does that mean they are for all of us as well? With public funds in the Netherlands declining, this question has become increasingly pressing.

He transformed well-known depictions of the plague to create an image of an unspecified hos- pital in a timeless setting. More than simply an image of a hospital, the painting is also an allegory of human dependence on God. Focusing on the plague-stricken figure of Charity, the allegory visualizes moral ideas that were disseminated in a 1526 tract on poor relief written by Juan Luis Vives.

De vele gesprekken met directies en medewerkers uit de sector maakten de commissie duidelijk dat musea knooppunten zijn van cultuur en geschiedenis, kennis(overdracht), innovatie en economische ontwikkeling. Musea zoeken meer dan ooit aansluiting bij wat mensen van nu bezighoudt en boeit. De corebusiness van musea blijft de collectie, De bekostigingssystematiek, de beoordeling maar uiteindelijk is een collectie vooral het van kwaliteit, de sturing en de verantwoording middel om mensen iets te leren, op gedachten vragen om meer ruimte om die diversiteit te te brengen of te raken, zichzelf te ontplooien en kunnen blijven bieden. Dit is het moment zowel te vermaken. Het is in onze ogen niet verstandig voor musea zelf als voor de overheden en de overwegend vanuit een consumentenperspec- Museumvereniging om onze voorstellen hierover tief naar musea te kijken en hen uitsluitend ter hand te nemen. Ons rapport is een pleidooi op bezoekersaantallen te beoordelen. Net als voor variëteit, voor verschil maken en je daarover andere vrijetijdsbesteding bieden ze mensen verantwoorden. Mensen verschillen en musea weliswaar vermaak, maar het is altijd meer dan zijn er voor mensen.
