(212)741-8163 Liz Magor I Have Wasted My Life May 21 - July 3 Opening Reception: Friday, May 21, 4 - 7 pm Andrew Kreps Gallery is pleased to announce I Have Wasted My Life, an exhibition of new works by Liz Magor at 22 Cortlandt Alley. On the wall, a new sculpture titled Perennial is formed from a duffle coat, which in the 1960s and 1970s had become a de-facto uniform for student protestors, including those part of the nascent environmental movement in Vancouver, where Greenpeace was founded in 1971. A near artifact from this time, the coat carries with it the accumulated wear from these actions. The artist’s own interventions seek to repair the garment, though in lieu of erasure, Magor marks the damage using paint, ink, and sculptural material. Simultaneously, Magor adds vestiges of the coat’s past activity, such as two cookies cast in gypsum placed in its pocket to resuscitate it to its prior use. Magor often positions humble objects at the center of her sculptures, the stuff that plays fleeting roles in our lives as repositories for memories and affection before being replaced. Three found workbenches, positioned throughout the galleries, become stages for these objects, suggesting sites for their rehabilitation. On each, a meticulously molded and cast toy animal rests between an array of accumulated items that range from the deeply personal, such as small collections of rocks, shells, and dried flowers, to those that are ubiquitous, such as Ikea Lack furniture, which is produced in a way that it is no longer contained to one place, or time. -

Aesthetic Apparatus Midwesterners Dan Ibarra and Michael Byzewski of Aesthetic Apparatus have carved a niche as designers of iconic band posters for the likes of the Meat Puppets, Art Chantry, Frank Black the Ames Brothers and about a zillion more. Over the years, their limited edition, screen-printed concert posters and art prints have created a certain aura about their work. Their growing reputation has landed them gigs for Blue Q, Stella Artois, Harper Collins, American Cancer Society and Criterion Collection, and their work has been featured in Print, Step Into Design, Communication Arts, Creative Review, and Rolling Stone (among others), as well as in the recent Chronicle Books rock art Bible, "The Art of Modern Rock." Kinsey Los Angeles-based Kinsey is a powerhouse of the graffiti-turned-fine-art set. His paintings and designs tend to find analogies for human culture and conflict in the natural and animal worlds, and the resulting images are both beautiful and unsettling. Coming of age just before the explosion of computer-based design and being trained as a fine artist in painting and drawing, it's perhaps natural that Kinsey's art has its roots in a painterly, "by hand" aesthetic that shines through even in works where the computer plays an important role. Whether he's painting on canvas or designing sneakers, a leather jacket or motorcycle helmet, everything Kinsey does has a vibrant, kinetic, multi- layered look that is his alone. David Bray Fantasy and imagination have marked Kent- born artist David Bray from the start. As a child he drew images of space travel that depicted himself and his friends exploring distant planets. -

Tours roll across the coun- try like mobile homes in a Florida hurricane. The most memo- rable for this magazine/bar owner were the Warped Tour and Wakestock, where such bands as Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Closet Monster, The Trews and Crowned King had audiences in mosh-pit frenzies. At Wakestock, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., Gasoline, Fox Racing, and Bluenotes rocked so hard at their two-day private cottage party that local authorities shut down the stage after Magneta Lane and Flashlight Brown. Poor Moneen didn't get to crush the eardrums of the drunken revellers. That was day one! Day two was an even bigger party with the live music again shut down. The Reason, Moneen and Crowned King owned the patio until Alexisonfire and their crew rolled into party. Gasoline would also like to thank Chuck (see cover story) and other UN officials for making sure that the boys in Sum41 made it back to the Bovine for another cocktail, despite the nearby mortar and gunfire during their Warchild excursion. Finding Love in Hopeless Places: Complex Relationality and Impossible Heterosexuality in Popular Music Videos by Pink and Rihanna Marc Lafrance and Lori Burns KEYWORDS: Pink, Rihanna, music video, popular music, cross-domain analysis, relationality, heterosexuality, liquid love ABSTRACT: This paper presents an interpretive approach to music video analysis that engages with critical scholarship in the areas of popular music studies, gender studies and cultural studies. Two key examples—Pink’s pop video “Try” and Rihanna’s electropop video “We Found Love”—allow us to examine representations of complex human relationality and the paradoxical challenges of heterosexuality in late modernity. We explore Zygmunt Bauman’s notion of “liquid love” in connection with the selected videos. A model for the analysis of lyrics, music, and images according to cross-domain parameters ( thematic, spatial & temporal, relational, and gestural ) facilitates the interpretation of the expressive content we consider. Our model has the potential to be applied to musical texts from the full range of musical genres and to shed light on a variety of social and cultural contexts at both the micro and macro levels. Featured practices connect to ideas of being, animism, and the power of making the imagination take form. In works that span drawing, sculpture, and video, these artists court intoxicating historical visions that haunt modern imagination in our perpetual quest for knowledge and enlightenment. Here, the night sky recreated with candle flame, hypnotic swirls of human ash, and daydreams on eternity evoke personal positions in relation to the vastness of the world. They also offer fantastical reflections on the juncture between reason and dreams, existing at the meeting point of perception, awareness and philosophy. In the context of Astral Bodies, this assembly of viewpoints results in an exploration of contemporary Western pathologies, contradictions, and anxieties about what lies beyond our immediate reality. Curated by York Lethbridge Artist Biographies Shuvinai Ashoona was born in Cape Dorset in 1961, the daughter of artists Kiawak Ashoona and Sorosilutu. She began drawing in 1996, and was first included in the Cape Dorset annual print collection in 1997. Ashoona’s work has appeared in exhibitions including: Three Women, Three Generations, McMichael Canadian Collection (1999); Toronto’s Nuit Blanche (2008); Justina Barnicke Gallery, Toronto (2009); The 18th Biennale of Sydney and Sakahans, National Gallery of Canada (both 2013), and SITElines 2014: Unsettled Landscapes, Sante Fe, New Mexico. -

Aproximación a las influencias comunicacionales y artísticas en la obra de Floria Sigismondi ANDREA SALOMÉ MORALES GALÁRRAGA ANDRÉS ALFREDO LUNA MONTALVO 2017 octubre La producción del videoclip y la narrativa de nuevos lenguajes. 225 Aproximación a las influencias comunicacionales y artísticas en la obra de Floria Sigismondi El presente trabajo realiza un acercamiento a la lectura de las representaciones visuales del cuerpo presentes en los trabajos realizados por la directora Floria Sigismondi. A través del análisis de productos audiovisuales de diversos artistas, agrupaciones y géneros musicales, se evidencia la influencia y la intertextualidad de ciertos elementos artísticos del vanguardismo y del cine, presentes en el manejo, montaje, diseño y composición de escenarios, personajes y narrativas de sus videoclips. Iconos musicales como David Bowie o Marilyn Manson han logrado ge- nerar un campo de interpretaciones que deconstruyen realidades convencionales, pero no solo en la composición musical de sus obras, sino en el diseño de un trabajo audiovisual en el que Sigismondi ausculta en los imaginarios de los públicos receptores, que pueden rebasar los acuerdos sociales para redefinir al cuerpo y los ambientes. En el trabajo de la directora artística, hemos encontrado una serie de influencias atadas a los clásicos del cine, a quie- nes no solo reinventa en nuevas exhibiciones de corte musical, como es el caso de Luis Buñuel, sino que también rinde homenaje a esas piezas que están impregnadas en la memoria de sus públicos. Ciertamente, el videoclip constituye una de las prácticas comunicacionales más experimentales del discurso audiovisual contemporáneo, lo que permite a los realizadores explorar diversos y subjetivos modos de expresar y crear la realidad. -
