Shakespeare and Film: A Bibliographic Index (from Film to Book) Jordi Sala-Lleal University of Girona [email protected] Research into film adaptation has increased very considerably over recent decades, a development that coincides with postmodern interest in cultural cross-overs, artistic hybrids or heterogeneous discourses about our world. Film adaptation of Shakespearian drama is at the forefront of this research: there are numerous general works and partial studies on the cinema that have grown out of the works of William Shakespeare. Many of these are very valuable and of great interest and, in effect, form a body of work that is hybrid and heterogeneous. It seems important, therefore, to be able to consult a detailed and extensive bibliography in this field, and this is the contribution that we offer here. This work aims to be of help to all researchers into Shakespearian film by providing a useful tool for ordering and clarifying the field. It is in the form of an index that relates the bibliographic items with the films of the Shakespearian corpus, going from the film to each of the citations and works that study it. Researchers in this field should find this of particular use since they will be able to see immediately where to find information on every one of the films relating to Shakespeare. Though this is the most important aspect, this work can be of use in other ways since it includes an ordered list of the most important contributions to research on the subject, and a second, extensive, list of films related to Shakespeare in order of their links to the various works of the canon.

Though too weak in his last two years of life to resume film work, Eisenstein was too strong to relax his theoretical activity. His fatal attack, on the night of Feb ruary 10, 1948, interrupted him at work; when he was found the next morning, before him were his last words-an un finished essay on color, its use in the unfinished Ivan the Terrible.

IMAGING THE ALMEH: TRANSFORMATION AND MULTICULTURALIZATION OF THE EASTERN DANCER IN PAINTING, THEATRE, AND FILM, 1850-1950 A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Rihab Kassatly Bagnole November 2005 This dissertation entitled IMAGING THE ALMEH: TRANSFORMATION AND MULTICULTURALIZATION OF THE EASTERN DANCER IN PAINTING, THEATRE, AND FILM, 1850-1950 by Rihab Kassatly Bagnole has been approved for the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and the College of Fine Arts by Charles Buchanan Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts Charles A. McWeeny Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts BAGNOLE, RIHAB KASSATLY Ph.D. November 2005. Interdisciplinary Arts Imaging the Almeh: Transformation and Multiculturalization of the Eastern Dancer in Painting, Theatre, and film 1850-1950 (349pp.) Director of Dissertation: Charles Buchanan This dissertation explores the images of the Middle Eastern and North African dancer, also known as raqisah sharqi, almeh, and belly dancer, and the role of Western and Eastern male artists in developing her persona. It argues that Jean-Léon Gérôme, Oscar Wilde, and Farid al-Atrash position the dancer according to their own agendas and persuade the viewers to gaze at her to advance their art. Al-Atrash, however, enables the dancer to suggest elements other than her sexuality when she dances to his music. The artworks of these artists are examined through the theory of the gaze, the postcolonial double marginalization of women, and the discourse of Orientalism. The representations of the almeh in Gérôme’s paintings are also explored via methods of feminist art historians that advocate interpretation through the examination of cultural and political context.

It was a period of profound change in German social, political, and cultural experience, and rarely has the confluence of those experiences figured so influentially upon the performance of William Shakespeare's plays. In decades previous to Weimar, German Shakespeare productions manifested the awed reverence

ELIZA UNDERMINED: THE ROMANTICISATION OF SHAW’S PYGMALION A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at Massey University, Turitea Campus, New Zealand Derek John McGovern 2011 i Few twentieth-century plays have been adapted into as many media as Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. First performed on stage in 1913, it was published in book form (1916), turned into a series of screenplays and films (1934–38), modified for a stage musical (My Fair Lady, 1956) and for a film musical (My Fair Lady, 1964). In addition, the original text was revised in 1939 and 1941. This thesis examines the ways in which the play’s core themes have been reworked for these adaptations through a nexus of interpreters’ and adapters’ intentions, the formal conventions of the various media, and the interventions of Shaw himself. Throughout his screenplay and (stage) textual revisions, Shaw strove to emphasise the anti-romantic nature of the original play and its central concerns of class, independence, and transformation. On the stage, in Shaw’s retelling of the Pygmalion myth, the point was not that the “creator” (Higgins) and “creation” (Eliza) fall in love, but rather that the latter achieves independence from her autocratic Pygmalion. Marriage between the two, Shaw declared, was unthinkable.
