Box 157, Lismore, NSW 2480, Australia Abstract Structure and floristic composition of small trees and shrubs (1.5 m height to 10 cm diameter at breast height was described in two flood plain forests of the lower Ucayali river, Peruvian Amazon. The forests were of the high and low restinga type, on an annual average flooded around 1 and 2 months, respectively. The soils were nutrient rich entisols, and the vegetation forms closed high canopy forests with presence of emergents. A total of 25 permanent sample plots covering 0.64 ha were established. They were nested within six quadratic 1 ha permanent sample plots where large individuals (>10 cm DBH) were inventoried. Overall average density and basal area of the understorey were 4458 ha and 5.0 m2 /ha, respectively. The families of Moraceae, Leguminosae, Annonaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Lauraceae were among the most important tree families, while important shrub and small tree families were Violaceae, Rubiaceae, Melastomataceae, and Olacaceae. Two hundred eight and 204 tree species were registered in the restinga forest overstories and understories, respectively. Fifty-six percent of the species were shared between the two forest strata, while around 22% were confined to each of them. -

Los amerindios la cultivan, desde mucho antes de la llegada de los españoles y portugueses a América. Aún es posible encontrar variedades silvestres. Tiene de 12 a 15 m (y no infrecuente 20 m) de altura. El tronco es cilíndrico, delgado, con copa, corteza gris provista de anillos. Sus hojas son alternas, profundamente lobuladas, compuestas, con 9–11 folíolos de 10–20 cm × 2,5–4 cm, y un pecíolo de 20 cm de largo. Flores blancas, producidas 20 o más juntas en una inflorescencia de 10 cm de largo; al ser dioico tiene cada sexo en pies distintos: dos clases de flores, las pestiladas o hembras y las estaminadas o machos. Fruto ovoide, 4 cm de diámetro, drupaceo. La cáscara es verde al formarse, se vuelve violeta al madurar y se desprende con facilidad; la pulpa es blancuzca, dulce y jugosa y envuelve una semilla.[2][3] Además de agua contiene fósforo, potasio y prequeñas cantidades de calcio, hierro, sodio, vitaminas B y C y grasa. Se consume directamente como fruta o se utiliza en la preparación de bebidas refrescantes o en la fabricación de néctares, jaleas, mermeladas y vino. -

E-mail:[email protected] RESUMEN Se analizaron además de aspectos fenológicos de las plantas, características de las semillas y se establecieron cada una de las etapas de germinación y morfología de plántulas de cocura (Pourouma cecropiifolia Mart), especie frutal usada como complemento alimenticio en algunas comunidades Piaroas, ubicadas en el Sector Norte de la Reserva Forestal Sipapo, en las cercanías de los ríos Cuao y Sipapo. Las fenofases fueron identificadas con información de herbarios y con observaciones directas de campo. Se revisaron los herbarios de Puerto Ayacucho (TFAV), Mérida (MER), Guanare (PORT), Maracay (MY) y Caracas (VEN). Los análisis de las semillas se realizaron según las reglas internacionales ISTA y el desarrollo de las plántulas fue evaluado en invernadero. Los resultados fenológicos indican que P. cecropiifolia florece y fructifica a finales de la época seca; es de floración tardía y fructificación de temporada corta y estacional. Martius “uvilla”, cuyo hábitat es principalmente el trópico, también es conocida con los nombres de "uvilla", "uva caimarona", "caimarón", "caima" y "puruma". Presenta un contenido de agua de 84,50 gramos por ciento. En base seca, en gramos por ciento, presenta: extracto etéreo 1,87; proteína total 2,06; ceniza 1,81; fibra cruda 5,42 y carbohidratos 88,84. En base seca, en miligramos por ciento: vitamina B1 0,58; vitamina B2 1,42; niacina 1,94 y vitamina C 31,0. También presenta en base seca, en miligramos por ciento: calcio 154,84; hierro 3,87 y fósforo 64,52. En el screening fitoquímico se detectó la presencia de compuestos fenólicos, flavonoides, taninos, alcaloides y esteroides. SUMMARY The specie Pourouma cecropiifolia C.martius (Uvilla), whose habitat is the tropic, it is also known as “uvilla”, “uva caimanera”, “ caimaron”, “caima” y “puruma “. It presents content of water 84,50 grams percent. In dry sample: ethereal extract 0,91; total protein 2,06; ash 1,81; crude fiber 5,42; carbohydrates 88,84 grams percent. -

Aceito em 24/04/2012 RESUMO (Flora lenhosa do Uruguai: inventário e implicação na região Pampeana). Contar com um conhecimento adequado da flora é fundamental para o desenvolvimento de investigação em diversos campos disciplinares. Neste contexto, nosso trabalho surge da necessidade de atualizar e melhorar a informação disponível sobre a flora lenhosa nativa do Uruguai. Nossos objetivos são determinar objetivamente a flora lenhosa uruguaia (arbustos e árvores), avaliar a completude do inventário e explorar sua similaridade com regiões vizinhas. Ao analisar a flora do Uruguai, produzi- mos definições operacionais de arbustos e árvores e obtivemos uma lista de 313 espécies (57 famílias, 124 gêneros). Usando 7.418 registros de distribuição, geramos curvas acumulativas de riqueza de espécies para estimar o potencial máximo de riqueza de espécies em escala nacional e local. Concluímos que a completude a nível nacional é elevado (89-95%), mas em escala local é menor e bastante heterogêneo. Existem ainda grandes áreas sem dados ou com pouca informação. Encontramos que as espécies arbóreas do Uruguai, comparativamente, apresentam similaridade elevada com a Província de Entre Rios (Argentina), média com a Província de Buenos Aires (Argentina) e baixa com o Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil). Conclui-se que a riqueza de árvores e arbustos da flora uruguaia é maior do que a esperada para uma região de pradarias, e as diferenças encontradas nos indíces de similaridade com as floras lenhosas vizinhas estimulam estudos futuros para reavaliar o esquema fitogeográfico da região. -

Wild Food Plants Used by the Indigenous Peoples of the South American Gran Chaco: a General Synopsis and Intercultural Comparison Gustavo F

Scarpa (Received November 13, 2009) Summary The Gran Chaco is the most extensive wooded region in South America after the Amazon Rain Forest, and is also a pole of cultural diversity. This study summarises and updates a total of 573 ethnobotanical data on the use of wild food plants by 10 indigenous groups of the Gran Chaco, as published in various bibliographical sources. In addition, estimates are given as to the levels of endemicity of those species, and intercultural comparative analyses of the plants used are made. A total of 179 native vegetable taxa are used as food of which 69 are endemic to, or characteristic of, this biogeographical region. In all, almost half these edible species belong to the Cactaceae, Apocynaceae, Fabaceae and Solanaceae botanical families, and the most commonly used genera are Prosopis, Opuntia, Solanum, Capparis, Morrenia and Passiflora. The average number of food taxa used per ethnic group is around 60 species (SD = 12). The Eastern Tobas, Wichi, Chorote and Maká consume the greatest diversity of plants. Two groups of indigenous peoples can be distinguished according to their relative degree of edible plants species shared among them be more or less than 50 % of all species used. A more detailed look reveals a correlation between the uses of food plants and the location of the various ethnic groups along the regional principal rainfall gradient. -

Várias plantas dessas famílias têm sido utilizadas pela população brasileira para fins medicinais. Foi realizado um levantamento sobre o uso medicinal de espécies dessas duas famílias no Brasil. A família Myrtaceae destaca-se pelo grande número de espécies empregadas em diversas patologias, principalmente distúrbios gastrointestinais e estados infecciosos, enquanto que Melatomataceae apresenta uma flora medicinal relativamente pouco conhecida. Many plants of these families have been employed for medicinal purposes by Brazilian’s population. A survey was performed to find out the medicinal uses of these species in Brazil. The Myrtaceae family have a great number of species employed in several diseases, specially gastrointestinal disorders and infectious diseases. Melastomataceae have a medicinal flora poorly known. Myrtaceae constitui uma das mais (Romero, 2003) com cerca de 68 gêneros e mais de 1500 importantes famílias de Angiospermae no Brasil espécies. -

Section 3406. Mediterranean Fruit Fly Interior Quarantine A quarantine is established against the following pest, its hosts, and possible carriers: A. Pest. Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) of the family Tephritidae is a notorious pest of most fleshy fruit and many vegetables. The adult has banded wings and is smaller than a house fly. B. Area Under Quarantine. 1. An area shall be designated as under quarantine when survey results indicate an infestation is present, the Department has defined the infested area and the local California County Agricultural Commissioner(s) is notified and requests the quarantine area be established. The Department shall also provide electronic and/or written notification of the area designation(s) to other California County Agricultural Commissioners and other interested or affected parties and post the area description to its website at: www.cdfa.ca.gov/plant/medfly/regulation.html. An interested party may also go to the above website and elect to receive automatic notifications of any changes in quarantine areas through the list serve option. 2. If an area is not undergoing the sterile insect technique, an infestation is present when eggs, a larva, a pupa, a mated female or two or more male or unmated female Mediterranean fruit fly adults are detected within three miles of each other and within one life cycle. In an area undergoing sterile insect technique the criteria for an infestation are the same except a single mated female does not constitute an infestation but counts towards an adult for two or more. 3.
