Anwar Hossain3 Abstract Background: The Oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is an important polyphagous pest of horticultural produce. The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a proven control method against many insect pests, including fruit flies, under area-wide pest management programs. High quality mass-rearing process and the cost-effective production of sterile target species are important for SIT. Irradiation is reported to cause severe damage to the symbiotic community structure in the mid gut of fruit fly species, impairing SIT success. However, studies have found that target-specific manipulation of insect gut bacteria can positively impact the overall fitness of SIT-specific insects. Results: Twelve bacterial genera were isolated and identified from B. dorsalis eggs, third instars larval gut and adults gut. The bacterial genera were Acinetobacter, Alcaligenes, Citrobacter, Pseudomonas, Proteus, and Stenotrophomonas, belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. Larval diet enrichment with the selected bacterial isolate, Proteus sp. was found to improve adult emergence, percentage of male, and survival under stress. However, no significant changes were recorded in B. dorsalis egg hatching, pupal yield, pupal weight, duration of the larval stage, or flight ability. Conclusions: These findings support the hypothesis that gut bacterial isolates can be used in conjunction with SIT. -

This study aimed to identify the damage caused by this species, evaluate its development, and correlate its infestation rate with physical and chemical characteristics of Packhams and Williams pear fruit cultivars at five different stages of development. In the field, cages were installed on branches of the pear plants in which two couples of A. fraterculus were released for a period of 48 hours. The damage resulting from oviposition was evaluated at fifteen-day intervals from the day the insects were released until harvest. The evaluation of damage consisted of visual observation of decayed and deformed fruits and the presence of larvae. In the laboratory, two couples were individualized with one fruit in a 750 mL pot for 48 hours. -

Qualitative phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of alkaloid, steroid, saponin, phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Total phenolic and flavonoid content measured by Folin-Ciocalteu and Aluminium chloride method was observed maximum for peel (93.05 ± 0.33 mg GAE /gm and 34.33 ± 0.24 mg CA /gm of dried extract respectively. In DPPH assay method, peel showed significant (P < 0.05) antioxidant activity based on IC50 value. Total antioxidant capacity and reducing power assay result also demonstrated potential antioxidant capacity of B. ramiflora peel. The seed with flesh extract significantly (P < 0.01) inhibited writhing 46.51% induced by acetic acid in mice at 200 mg/ kg doses. -

Zhu, e-mail [email protected]; Fax no.: 86-871-5160916 Abstract Complete floristic and vegetation surveys were done in a newly established nature reserve on a tropical mountain in southern Yunnan. Three vegetation types in three altitudinal zones were recognized: a tropical seasonal rain forest below 1,100 m; a lower montane evergreen broad- leaved forest at 1,100-1,600 m; and a montane rain forest above 1,600 m. A total of 1,657 species of seed plants in 758 genera and 146 families were recorded from the nature reserve. Tropical families (61%) and genera (81%) comprise the majority of the flora, and tropical Asian genera make up the highest percentage, showing the close affinity of the flora with the tropical Asian (Indo-Malaysia) flora, despite the high latitude (22N). Floristic changes with altitude are conspicuous. The transition from lowland tropical seasonal rain forest dominated by mixed tropical families to lower montane forest dominated by Fagaceae and Lauraceae occurs at 1,100-1,150 m. Although the middle montane forests above 1,600 m have ‘oak-laurel’ assemblage characteristics, the temperate families Magnoliaceae and Cornaceae become dominant. -

Despite variation of species diversity was found in different saline zones the highest numbers of species were recorded in moderately saline zone. Distribution of existing plant species were recorded as 67.20% trees and 32.80% were woody, non-woody and climber types. The family Euphorbiaceae followed by Poaceae and Fabaceae represented highest number of species. On an average, 181 species existed per homestead. Distribution of species in different saline zones varied and it was highest in less saline zone (37.16%) followed by strongly saline (32.55%), and moderately saline (30.29%) zones. The most prevalent timber tree species are Albizia richardiana, Swietenia macrophylla and Samanea saman. Adaptation of different species in various saline zones widely varied due to different levels of salinity while Cocos nucifera as fruit species was almost equally dominant in all saline zones. -
