Sabah and Sarawak cover the northern coast of the island. The lower two‐thirds of Borneo is Kalimantan, which belongs to Indonesia. The area has a fascinating history, and probably because it is on one of the main trade routes through South East Asia, Borneo has had many masters. Sabah and Sarawak were incorporated into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 and Malaysia is now regarded a safe and orderly Islamic country. Sabah has a diverse ethnic population of just over 3 million people with 32 recognised ethnic groups. The largest of these is the Malays (these include the many different cultural groups that originally existed in their own homeland within Sabah), Chinese and “non‐official immigrants” (mainly Filipino and Indonesian). In recent centuries piracy was common here, but it is now generally considered relatively safe for cruising. However, the nearby islands of Southern Philippines have had some problems with militant fundamentalist Muslim groups – there have been riots and violence on Mindanao and the Tawi Tawi Islands and isolated episodes of kidnapping of people from Sabah in the past 10 years or so.

    NEW SPECIES OF HOYA (APOCYNACEAE – ASCLEPIADOIDEAE) FROM SABAH, MALAYSIA HOYA RANAUENSIS, sp. n. T. Green* and D. Kloppenburg** *Green: Plant Research, P O Box 597, Kaaawa, Hawaii 96730 ** 6427 North Fruit Ave., Fresno, California 93711 ABSTRACT: To add to the approximately 60 described species of Hoya from Sabah, this new species is from the Ranau District of Eastern Sabah, a plant that could be confused with Hoya vitellinioides, Bakh. f. that is found in the same area. In growth, Hoya ranauensis is similar to Hoya vitelliniodes but with differing venation and leaf edge, larger umbel and differing floral parts. KEY WORDS: Hoya, Hoya ranauensis, Hoya vitelliniodes Hoya ranauensis T. Green & Kloppenburg sp. nova. Diagnosis: A tropical, epiphytic, branching vine, with smooth round stems, occasionally rooting along stems; widely spaced elliptic to lanceolate leaves with an obtuse to cuneate base, smooth, tip acute, with thick texture; nerves conspicuously pinnate with the 4-7 secondary nerves, about 45 degrees to the midvein, anastomosing outwardly; blade 10-20 cm long by 4–7.5 cm wide, glandless; petiole 0.3-0.5 cm x 1-2 cm, fleshy; peduncle round, 0.3 cm in diameter x 1.0 cm - 2.5 cm long, permanent, bearing a hemispheric, many flowered (30-40) umbel; pedicels thread-like, 2 cm long and 0.10 cm in diameter; calyx 5 lobed, small 0.3 cm; corolla 5 lobed 1.5 cm in diameter: corona 5 lobed, ovate. Ovaries, 2. Seed pod not seen. Corolla ivory with red tips, corona white. Fragrance pleasant and spicy. Milky sap in vegetation.

    KINABULU PARK MALAYSIA Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea, dominates this park in the state of Sabah on the northern tip of Borneo. The Park’s altitudinal and climatic gradient from tropical lowland and hill rainforest through tropical montane forest to sub-alpine forest and scrub combined with steep slopes, varied geology and frequent climatic oscillations provide ideal conditions for speciation. The Park has a diverse biota and high endemism and is a Centre of Plant Diversity containing species from the Himalayas, China, Australia and Malaysia as well as pan- tropical flora. Most of Borneo’s mammals, birds, amphibians and invertebrates many of which are threatened and vulnerable, occur in the Park. STATEMENT OF OUTSTANDING UNIVERSAL VALUE [pending] The UNESCO World Heritage Committee issued the following statement at the time of inscription: Justification for Inscription Criteria (ix) and (x): The site has a diverse biota and high endemism. The altitudinal and climatic gradient from tropical forest to alpine conditions combine with precipitous topography, diverse geology and frequent climate oscillations to provide conditions ideal for the development of new species. The Park contains high biodiversity with representatives from more than half the families of all flowering plants. The majority of Borneo’s mammals, birds, amphibians and invertebrates (many threatened and vulnerable) occur in the Park. Sipman Botanischer Garten und Museum, Königin-Luise-Str. 6-8, 14115 Berlin, Germany Abstract: 286 species of lichenized fungi on Mount Kinabalu are recorded by field survey and investigation of literature records and herbarium material. An annotated catalogue is presented, together with habitat notes, and a list of collectors. The summit area has a saxicolous lichen flora of boreal affinities, while the lower zones are more closely related to other SE Asian mountains. Eleven species appear to be restricted to the mountain, and four new species are described: Phaeographis kinabalensis, Stereocaulon granulans, Pertusaria epitheciifera and Thelotrema subweberi. 1. Abstract: Direct current electrical surveys were carried out in the vicinity of the Poring Hot Springs. These surveys have detected the presence of low resistivity layers due to the presence of hot water systems and a sheared zone. The results of electrical sounding and profilings suggest that the hot-water systems are in the form of channels. Electrical surveys carried out to the east and southeast of the hot springs did not detect any low resistivity layer. INTRODUCTION Although electrical methods have been applied to numerous geophysical studies, the major application has been in the exploration of geothermal resources, such as in New Zealand, Italy, USA and several other parts of the world (Zohdy et al., 1973; Kumar et al., 1982; Singh et al., 1983). Electrical resistivity surveying is now regarded as one of the most valuable geophysical methods available for geothermal exploration. It was recognised in the early of distinguishing ground saturated with cold water from areas containing hot saline water of geothermal origin. The bulk resistivities of rocks vary with such factors as temperature, rock type, presence of a steam/gas phase and porosity. According to White et al., 1971, geothermal systems are of two types; hot-water systems and vapour-dominated systems. The electrical resistivity of a hot-water system is lower than the surrounding rocks (Gupta, 1980; Singh et al., 1983).
