After lunch it’s off to the city’s shopping precinct and central market where you have time to order spectacles, tailoring or any merchandise that may take a few days to produce. Day 4 Wednesday 14 August 2014 (B, L, D) Kinabalu National Park / Poring Hot Springs Sandakan This morning depart for Kinabalu National Park. Watch a video presentation about the park and visit the Natural History gallery. Trek to the canopy walkway through nature trails of the lowland forest. Observe wildlife and the tropical rain forest from the canopy. Continue your journey to Sandakan where you will check into your hotel. Day 5 Thursday 15 August 2014 (B, L, D) Sandakan Day Memorial Service / Orang Utan Centre / Sandakan City Tour After an early breakfast you will be transferred to the Sandakan Day Service at the Australian POW War Memorial Garden. After the service is concluded you will proceed to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation centre. Witness the feeding of the orphaned orang utans. Later visit the famed Agnes Keith’s restored house which is now a museum. A short tour of Sandakan follows. Day 6 Friday 16 August 2014 (B, L, D) Sandakan / Kinabatangan After breakfast you depart Sandakan by land to Sukau village which is located by the Kinabatangan River. Check in to the Sukau River Lodge for an overnight stay. Enjoy a boat trip to watch the curious proboscis monkeys gather by the river bank and it’s also a good chance to see numerous species of birds and other wildlife until nightfall. Day 7 Saturday 17 August 2014 (B, L, D) Kinabatangan / Kundasang War Memorial / Kota Kinabalu After breakfast at the lodge and checking out of the Sukau River Lodge we follow the Death March route to return to Kota Kinabalu where almost two thousands Australian POW’s were killed along the way. Enroute we visit the Sabah Tea Garden. Continue your journey to Kota Kinabalu. Stop by the Australian War Memorial in Kundasang which was established as a tribute to the memory of the Australians and British POWs who died in Sandakan, Ranau or during the Death Marches. Returning to Kota Kinabalu check into your hotel. Day 8 Sunday 17 August 2014 (B, L, D) Kudat / Rungus Longhouse / Tip of Borneo After breakfast, check out of the hotel and drive north to Kudat. Villages, rice fields and beautiful scenery can be seen along the way. Visit a traditional Rungus longhouse in a village just outside Kudat. Proceed to Kudat which is famous for its fishing and boat repair industry. Day 9 Monday 19 August 2014 (B,L,D) Historical Labuan Tour / Cultural Dinner Early this morning after breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Labuan. Upon arrival, you will proceed on a tour of historic Labuan where Japanese Soldiers surrendered to the Allied forces during World War Two. Visit Peace Park, the War Monument, the Commonwealth Memorial Park, the Chimney, the Coal Museum and Labuan Square. After lunch, transfer back to the airport to board your flight for Kota Kinabalu. Day 10 Tuesday 20 August 2014 (B, L, D) Sapi / Manukan Island After breakfast you will depart Kota Kinabalu’s city jetty on a boat journey to Manukan Island. Day is free at leisure on the island. Sabah and Sarawak cover the northern coast of the island. The lower two‐thirds of Borneo is Kalimantan, which belongs to Indonesia. The area has a fascinating history, and probably because it is on one of the main trade routes through South East Asia, Borneo has had many masters. Sabah and Sarawak were incorporated into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 and Malaysia is now regarded a safe and orderly Islamic country. Sabah has a diverse ethnic population of just over 3 million people with 32 recognised ethnic groups. The largest of these is the Malays (these include the many different cultural groups that originally existed in their own homeland within Sabah), Chinese and “non‐official immigrants” (mainly Filipino and Indonesian). In recent centuries piracy was common here, but it is now generally considered relatively safe for cruising. However, the nearby islands of Southern Philippines have had some problems with militant fundamentalist Muslim groups – there have been riots and violence on Mindanao and the Tawi Tawi Islands and isolated episodes of kidnapping of people from Sabah in the past 10 years or so.

    NEW SPECIES OF HOYA (APOCYNACEAE – ASCLEPIADOIDEAE) FROM SABAH, MALAYSIA HOYA RANAUENSIS, sp. n. T. Green* and D. Kloppenburg** *Green: Plant Research, P O Box 597, Kaaawa, Hawaii 96730 ** 6427 North Fruit Ave., Fresno, California 93711 ABSTRACT: To add to the approximately 60 described species of Hoya from Sabah, this new species is from the Ranau District of Eastern Sabah, a plant that could be confused with Hoya vitellinioides, Bakh. f. that is found in the same area. In growth, Hoya ranauensis is similar to Hoya vitelliniodes but with differing venation and leaf edge, larger umbel and differing floral parts. KEY WORDS: Hoya, Hoya ranauensis, Hoya vitelliniodes Hoya ranauensis T. Green & Kloppenburg sp. nova. Diagnosis: A tropical, epiphytic, branching vine, with smooth round stems, occasionally rooting along stems; widely spaced elliptic to lanceolate leaves with an obtuse to cuneate base, smooth, tip acute, with thick texture; nerves conspicuously pinnate with the 4-7 secondary nerves, about 45 degrees to the midvein, anastomosing outwardly; blade 10-20 cm long by 4–7.5 cm wide, glandless; petiole 0.3-0.5 cm x 1-2 cm, fleshy; peduncle round, 0.3 cm in diameter x 1.0 cm - 2.5 cm long, permanent, bearing a hemispheric, many flowered (30-40) umbel; pedicels thread-like, 2 cm long and 0.10 cm in diameter; calyx 5 lobed, small 0.3 cm; corolla 5 lobed 1.5 cm in diameter: corona 5 lobed, ovate. The Park has a diverse biota and high endemism and is a Centre of Plant Diversity containing species from the Himalayas, China, Australia and Malaysia as well as pan- tropical flora. Most of Borneo’s mammals, birds, amphibians and invertebrates many of which are threatened and vulnerable, occur in the Park. Sipman Botanischer Garten und Museum, Königin-Luise-Str. 6-8, 14115 Berlin, Germany Abstract: 286 species of lichenized fungi on Mount Kinabalu are recorded by field survey and investigation of literature records and herbarium material. An annotated catalogue is presented, together with habitat notes, and a list of collectors. The summit area has a saxicolous lichen flora of boreal affinities, while the lower zones are more closely related to other SE Asian mountains. Eleven species appear to be restricted to the mountain, and four new species are described: Phaeographis kinabalensis, Stereocaulon granulans, Pertusaria epitheciifera and Thelotrema subweberi. 1. Abstract: Direct current electrical surveys were carried out in the vicinity of the Poring Hot Springs. These surveys have detected the presence of low resistivity layers due to the presence of hot water systems and a sheared zone. The results of electrical sounding and profilings suggest that the hot-water systems are in the form of channels. Electrical surveys carried out to the east and southeast of the hot springs did not detect any low resistivity layer. INTRODUCTION Although electrical methods have been applied to numerous geophysical studies, the major application has been in the exploration of geothermal resources, such as in New Zealand, Italy, USA and several other parts of the world (Zohdy et al., 1973; Kumar et al., 1982; Singh et al., 1983). Electrical resistivity surveying is now regarded as one of the most valuable geophysical methods available for geothermal exploration. It was recognised in the early of distinguishing ground saturated with cold water from areas containing hot saline water of geothermal origin. The bulk resistivities of rocks vary with such factors as temperature, rock type, presence of a steam/gas phase and porosity. According to White et al., 1971, geothermal systems are of two types; hot-water systems and vapour-dominated systems. The electrical resistivity of a hot-water system is lower than the surrounding rocks (Gupta, 1980; Singh et al., 1983).
