Millions of spectators around the globe watched the event on screens and more than 100,000 people lined the streets of Windsor, England, to see the newly wed couple (fig.1).12 The religious ceremony formed the center of the festivities. It took place in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, attended by 600 invited guests. While this recent example is extraordinary in terms of public interest and financial cost, traits of this event can also be found in less grand ceremonies held by those of more limited economic means. The Black Wedding, 9-10, p.1 He entered into the airport with quite the unique stature to his persona. Black from the tip of his shoes to the brim collar of his thick trench coat. The only color was a white item peaking out of his coat. He came out of the gate, placing his hat, a chaps hat as if something that came out of a stereotypical British drama, on top of his head. He then headed straight towards the baggage claim. There was a hush around him that developed this quiet buzzing. The buzzing of the carousel coming with the luggage from his flight. Flight 1922 from London. It was the last flight to arrive before the airport was going to get blanketed in complete and utter snow. The man, aware of the weather, hurried his way out of the airport and called for a taxi. It took no less than five minutes before the first taxi arrived in signature yellow with black highlight coloring. The driver, distinct with a sharp Italianesque accent, asked the man one single question. “Where to?” The man quickly responded in a fusion of English and Northeast American accents, “The Park.” It was a grey day in the city, and it perfectly described the mood and outlook of the week behind and the day ahead. The man had the horror of being dragged to visit a wedding ceremony. It something that infuriated the man to bits and pieces, however the man realized that no one was ever going to tolerate him if he were to act with such bonkers and gob smacking actions. -

Sukran Bridal and Tuxedo by Isabelle Ghaneh The number one item at the top of a bride’s agenda is the selection of a wed- ding dress. Finding a style that suits you and will please your groom, as well as “wow” your family and friends, isn’t easy. Brides can spend hours trekking from one bridal shop to another in search of their dream dress. Sukran Aryl, who has been designing dresses for over 30 years, was born in Turkey. Sukran started to sew when she was seven. She began designing and mak- ing her own clothes when she was in her teens. Sukran initially went to college to become a pharmacist. When she came to America in 1978, she had her degree in hand. However, she soon became a dressmaker and designer. “I was living in a condominium in Norwalk and making my own clothes. A neighbor saw me wearing a dress and loved it. I told her it was one of my own creations. She asked me to design a dress for her. I went to the fabric store and picked up the mate- rial and went home and made her a dress. She was thrilled and told her friends and family what I had done for her,” Sukran said. As word of mouth increased Sukran’s dressmaking business, she continued to work from home, but “I outgrew my living room and had to set up a separate estab- lishment from the house. My first store was in Westport in 1981. I was on Main Street, behind the Remarkable Bookshop, which is no longer in business. -

2018 — Anonymous Was A Woman anonymouswasawoman.org/2018 Dotty Attie Painting Dotty Attie (b. 1938, Pennsauken, New Jersey) is a painter who lives and works in New York City, utilizing images from the art of the past in her work and social commentary. In 1971 she helped found AIR Gallery, at that time the sole gallery in New York to show only the art of women. Since 1972 she has been making small works (first, 2-½-inch square drawings and, since 1985, six-inch by six-inch paintings). Several of these paintings are combined, and then combined again with a text, sometimes taken from other sources, sometimes written by her, to make one work that has an ambiguous narrative. She has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally, including Paris, Osaka, Cairo, London, Venice, and Berlin. Attie’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, Brooklyn Museum, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Yale Museum, the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Walker Art Center, and the National Art Gallery, London, among many others. She has received several awards, including two CAPS grants, two NEA grants, and a US/Japan Fellowship. Attie earned her BA at the Philadelphia College of Art. When Two Become One: Sacramental Woes And Theological Anxiety In Medieval Representations Of Marriage Abstract This dissertation traces the long, winding, and problematic road along which marriage became a sacrament of the Church. In so doing, it identifies several key problems with marriage’s ability to fulfill the sacramental criteria laid out in Peter Lombard’s Sentences: that a sacrament must signify a specific form of divine grace, and that it must directly bring about the grace that it signifies. While, on the basis of Ephesians 5, theologians had no problem identifying the symbolic power of marriage with the spiritual union of Christ and the Church, they never fully succeeded in locating a form of effective grace, placing immense stress upon marriage’s status as a signifier. As a result, theologians and canonists found themselves unable to deal with several social aspects of marriage that threatened this symbolic capacity, namely concubinage and the remarriage of widows and widowers.
