MIN. BID APRIL 2018 AUCTION & A JEANETTE WILLIAMS SOMETHINGS GOT A HOLD BACKBEAT 587 D M- 200 ON ME A total stormer that goes all the way back to the days of the Torch and seems to turn up so much less often than her Casino monster ‘All Of A Sudden’. Never booted or reissued on 45 – surely perfect for a revival therefore. B RONNIE McNEIR SITTING IN MY CLASS DETO 2878 M- 900 From Doc Kyle’s famed Detroit logo comes this debut disc from Ronnie McNeir (who wasn’t quite 16 when this was recorded). It isn’t well known, but later, much later, McNeir was briefly a member of the Four Tops when Levi Stubbs fell ill. Autographed sleeve too. C JOHNNY HOWARD THE CHASE IS ON BASHIE 101 WD M- 200 Fast and furious re-working of the Artistics song from an unknown, one-off artist (tho’ it may just be Johnny Williams who recorded two 45’s on the same label). Great condition on the storming side, a couple of marks on the flipside ‘I Miss My Lady’. D JERI SHAW A LITTLE LESS TALK MASTERSOUND 01 VG++ 200 It says something for the rarity of this Los Angeles release that Simon Soussan never found a copy to send to Wigan. For sure at the Casino this would have been a monster spin. Maestro Miles Grayson adds all the touches that make it ‘Northern’. E SAM DEES LONELY FOR YOU BABY SSS INT 732 M- 350 Sam’s first record recorded at Ed Boutwell’s studios in Birmingham. Alabama in 1966 and famous for that thunderous bassline. It’s amazing that this wasn’t picked up by the Northern scene in the seventies as copies were around on the shelves of Dees completists at that time. A total Northern Soul classic now of course. F BIG DON’S REBELLION IT WAS TRUE ETHON 101 VG++ 200 Another one from the eighties that would easily have made it big in the previous decade. A powerhouse production and rarer on the maroon label rather than the yellow label I would say. A small area of light scuffs have downgraded this one from mint condition. G RITCHIE ADAMS I CAN’T ESCAPE FROM YOU CONGRESS 256 M- 300 WD Blue-eyed Ritchie Adams cooked up a perfect mid-sixties storm on this frantic Northern dancer – not bad for a guy who wrote much of the Banana Splits material and was behind the Archies Mind you, he is with Jerry Ragavoy on this one. H DUKE BROWNER CRYING OVER YOU IMPACT 1008 VG 150 Yes you saw the minimum bid correctly. Reason? Well to be honest this stone classic has some ‘fuzz’ all the way through it. Check the soundbite. Recorded on superior Technics equipment the track is as it sounds – NOT WORSE in real life – and at a venue its probably fine. I SUGAR N’ SPICE LUCKY WE LIRA 777 VG++ 200 As rare as the Mints on Lira that we auctioned a couple of months and the only other release on this Ohio label. Two sides for your money, both written and produced by label owner Vermon Jones and both ‘Soundbitten’ for your delectation. J ARTHUR FREEMAN YOU GOT ME UPTIGHT JUMBO 004 M- 300 Another Northern gem that has never really had its day on the dancefloor. There were two Arthur Freemans – the ‘Played Out Playgirl’ guy is this one (originally from Florida) despite the Fame music publishing, the ‘Slippin Around’ guy is another singer although its difficult to believe. Whatever the truth, this one sure storms along. K BETTY TURNER THE WINDS KEPT CRESCENT 637 M- 400 LAUGHING A simply beautiful copy of this lovely, creaking West Coast dancer which has probably been played less than a couple of times (one of which is for the soundbite). Producers ‘G & G’ were Lenny Greene and John Gummoe (in whose San Diego garage studio this was recorded in 1963). L VONCIEL MYERS BUT I STILL LOVE YOU GAYTONE 111 VG++ 250 Gaytone Records declared themselves to be ‘the Soul Sound’ in Los Angeles circa 1966 and came up with this obscure double sider. In truth there was only one other release on the label so their ‘soul sound’ hardly took the City of Angels by storm. Nonetheless there are two good sides here so we have provided soundbites for both. M HELEN TROY I THINK I LOVE YOU KAPP 446 WD M- 200 Little is known about this singer who made 4 or 5 singles, although none with the careering power of this mover. The song is written by The Sierras and as that was a group who occasionally had a female lead it could be that Helen was in the group. N JIMMY ELLEDGE SAD TOWN SOUND-TOWN VG++ 200 73168 Elledge was a country singer who occasionally dipped his toe into black music with some skill. His version of ‘Can’t Stop a Man In Love’ is excellent for instance. And it’s the same with his rarest record offered up here, which overflows with melancholy and pathos over a great production. VG++ is perhaps a little unfair on a disc with only a couple of light marks. 0 LE BLEAU MONDE AFTER HOURS COUNTERPOINT M- 200 2579 WD And here’s a surprise, a record I’ve known as a Deep Soul rarity for many years turns out to have an excellent dancer on the other side. I can assure you I rarely found a copy when it was ‘just’ a slowie., in fact it must be at least 25 years since the last one. SECOND PAGE FOCUS PREVIOUSLY UNISSUED ON 45 45’s 1 BARBARA MERCER HEY GOLDEN WORLD 21 M- 15 So... try finding this one in Detroit these days. Two sides for your money as well. 2 THE VONTASTICS DAY TRIPPER ST. LAWRENCE 1014 M- 10 The Beatles song really does lend itself to the Northern Soul treatment, as this great version proves. 3 FINISHED TOUCH THE DOWN SOUND MOTOWN 1463 WD M- 10 1979 modern stomper – promo copies. 4 LOVE COMMITTEE CHEATERS NEVER WIN GOLD MIND 4003 M- 10 Played as a new release at Wigan in ’77 – one of very few modern spins at that time and sounding very good today. 5 DOROTHY MAMA LOVES HER GRC 2009 M- 10 NORWOOD CHILDREN ALL THE TIME One fantastic soul record from ’74. Gospel- tinged modern with a funky edge. Quite amazing stuff. 6 YOUNG-HOLT JUST AIN’T NO LOVE BRUNSWICK M- 15 UNLIMITED 554400 Simply BRILLIANT instrumental to the Barbara Acklin record. 7 THE PARLIAMENTS I CAN FEEL THE ICE MELTING REVILOT 2077 M- 15 Smooth, cool Detroit harmony soul..... you can’t beat it. 8 THE DELFONICS YOU’LL GET ENOUGH PHILLY GROOVE 3 M- 10 Tremendous 1969 mover was only ever issued on this as a 45. 9 THE OHIO PLAYERS A THING CALLED LOVE TANGERINE 978 M- 15 Prior to their mid seventies hits this group made some sixties corkers. Here is one such. 10 ARCHIE BELL & AIN’T NOTHING FOR A MAN IN GLADES 615 M- 15 THE DRELLS LOVE Our favourite record from Archie. Fabulous 1973 mover on a Philip Mitchell song. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER! LATEST MANIFESTO MAGAZINE (DECEMBER 2017) Richard Searling, Tim Brown Talks, Soul Sam, Simon White, Keith Rylatt..... all the regulars letting off steam in the good old fashioned medium of paper and ink.
