I hope the last season was a good one and you are excited at the prospect of the next. No doubt the coming season will present new challenges. There are several changes taking place within the community game. Representative and Age grade rugby being two areas that you will see big changes in. Something I would like you to think about as I do is “The season” whatever gender, mini, junior or adult it still runs from September through to May regardless of age. An interesting concept when you consider the differences in a “child” especially one who is playing rugby (6-17 years old) and an adult. Also, the expectations people and rugby places upon them. Our various competitions although governed by the national governing body still fit them all within the September to May playing space called the rugby season and or competitions calendar. “Competitions” an interesting word and don’t forget every game is a true competition for those taking part. I urge all those people involved in rugby to consider your duty of care to those people in your “Care” yes care. They are the future, not just the future of the game of rugby. The season has been an interesting and really enjoyable one for me as I have gone around the county looking and listening at clubs, schools, colleges on a Wednesday, Saturday or a Sunday both announced and un-announced (The second being the preference) Even though I understand the importance and privilege of my role. I have visited all the clubs in “D” division my previous representative division which is something I wanted to make sure I did first and foremost more than once. I have attended age grade and senior rugby representative fixtures. I have attended the club and schools cup competitions both at age grade and senior levels. I attended the Bristol Combination cup competition finals where it was great 4 11663 Somerset RFU Handbook (2019 - 2020) TEXT V5_11129 Somerset RFU Handbook (2018 - 2019 to see two Somerset clubs competing. Watching some exciting, competitive and enjoyable rugby as the season went by. I do have some concerns that a lot of what I see (junior and mini) looks like “adult rugby” however our recent Somerset RFU club survey suggests a theme as many clubs participating stated they would like better coaching in clubs. I have delivered new RFU Accreditation awards certificates to clubs in the county which is positive and will ensure they go forward trying to maintain the standards they have been asked to meet in obtaining their initial accreditation. The continuing theme I see within all these clubs from senior to junior rugby are the good people involved, making rugby happen. However, I am also very aware that there are a limited number of volunteers making it happen. In many cases those people are performing numerous different roles within their clubs and doing a great job. My thoughts are how do we lighten the load? How can we in the Clubs encourage, entice more people to get involved in every aspect of the game of rugby. Some great different ideas I hear of are based around summer and evening activities where softball, rounders, volleyball, athletics, cooking, book clubs are all taking place in the clubhouse or grounds and whole new families and people are coming to the club. So potential for new people to be involved? What does the rugby community look like? The county rugby management volunteers, the RFU staff would love you to get in contact and tell us how we can help you in your clubs to make your sport better. It starts with you in your clubs. Good people make better rugby clubs. Enjoy and love all you do at them this coming season. Mark Hawkes Somerset County Rugby Football Union, President 5 11663 Somerset RFU Handbook (2019 - 2020) TEXT V5_11129 Somerset RFU Handbook (2018 - 2019 FOREWORD BY PETER WHEELER , PRESIDENT, RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION 2019 - 2020 With a first County XV playing, and the Somerset Rugby Union formed, some 140 years ago, rugby certainly has strong roots in the area which continue to this day. Whether it is county or international honours for men and women, or thousands of youngsters enjoying the game, Somerset always ensures that rugby flourishes. That’s why it is a pleasure, as this season’s RFU President, to wish everyone involved in the game in the county a fantastic 2019/20 season. And what a season it promises to be, with the Rugby World Cup taking place in Japan and rugby fans across the country supporting England. Of course, our men and our Grand Slam winning women, and all playing elite rugby, began playing in clubs and schools like those in Somerset. I am tremendously grateful to all of you who give so freely of your time so that as many people as possible can enjoy our sport. Rugby remains a sport for all, breaking down barriers, providing lifelong friendships and bringing so many benefits in terms of confidence and good physical and mental health. Our player numbers, despite a decline in team sports in general, appear to be holding up and, indeed, we are achieving great growth in numbers of women and girls playing. So my appreciation to all of you working away behind the scenes, to our administrators, coaches, referees and all
