The upland oak woodland present on these two islands together represents one of the largest examples of this woodland type in the Stirling district. On Inchtavannach, the larger of the two islands, the woodland is dominated by sessile oak Quercus petraea and downy birch Betula pubescens with ground flora consisting of greater woodrush Luzula sylvatica, wavy hair-grass Deschampsia flexuosa, creeping soft-grass Holcus mollis, blaeberry Vaccinium myrtillus and typical acid oak woodland mosses such as Polytrichum formosum, Thuidium tamariscinum and liverworts Diplophyllum ablicans and Plagiochila asplenoides. On Inchonnachan, the southern half is dominated by former oak-birch coppice over luxuriant blaeberry Vaccinium myrtillus. The northern half is more varied and has been planted in past years with conifers, mainly larch Larix spp. and throughout the island there is Scots pine Pinus sylvestris and some spruce Picea spp.

In 2009, in partnership with the National Park Authorities, this work was extended to determine the special qualities of the two National Parks, including the National Scenic Areas within them. The result of the work for the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park is reported here. Main findings • The park is large and diverse with significantly different landscape characteristics in different areas. Hence as well as listing the landscape qualities which are generic across the park, the qualities for the four landscape areas of Argyll Forest, Loch Lomond, Breadalbane and the Trossachs are also given.

The study site, hosts and parasite species investigated within this thesis allowed the investigation of how natural fragmentation affects demographic and population dynamics of rodents (chapter 3). Reduced habitat connectivity is known to affect nearly every process in biology. Low degrees of fragmentation and high connectivity between habitats have been shown to provide the most stable conditions for populations to persist, as movement of organisms is less restricted.

The landscape is internationally renowned, so its importance extends far beyond the Park boundaries. The North Loch Lomond area is characterised by a vast and open sense of place and long dramatic vistas. The loch narrows north of Inveruglas and has a highland glen character with narrow and uneven sides and huge craggy slopes. The forests and woodlands along the loch shores contrast with surrounding uplands to create a landscape of high scenic value. The Loch Lomond Islands are unique landscape features with a secluded character, they tend to be densely wooded and knolly and hummocky in form. The upland hills, which include Ben Lomond and Ben Vorlich, surrounding Loch Lomond provide a dramatic backdrop to the loch. The upland hills are largely undeveloped and have an open and wild sense of place. However, there are exceptions, with evidence of pylons and masts on some hills and recreational pressures causing the erosion of footpaths on some of the more popular peaks.

Deer are free to swim from island to island and to the mainland, with fallow populations also present on the East mainland near Balmaha and the West mainland near Luss. It is assumed immigration and emigration occurs within the fallow deer population naturally at specific times of year and/or due to disturbance.
