The Fondation Louis Vuitton
THE FONDATION LOUIS VUITTON A new ambition for LVMH's corporate patronage Created by the LVMH group and its Maisons in 2006 on the initiative of Bernard Arnault, the Fondation Louis Vuitton forms part of the art and culture patronage programme developed by the group for over twenty years. It also marks a new step driven by a renewed ambition: – A lasting commitment with the desire to become firmly rooted in a particular place and bring an institution to life over the long term. – A major philanthropic gesture towards the city of Paris with the construction of an exceptional building on municipal state property and the signature of a 55-year occupancy agreement with Paris city council. Driven by a desire to work for the common good, the Fondation Louis Vuitton demonstrates a clear commitment to contemporary art and looks to make it accessible to as many people as possible. To foster the creation of contemporary art on a national and international scale, the Fondation Louis Vuitton calls on a permanent collection, commissions from artists, temporary modern and contemporary art exhibitions and multidisciplinary events. One of its priorities is to fulfil an educational role, especially among the young. A new monument for Paris Frank Gehry has designed a building that, through its strength and singularity, represents the first artistic step on the part of the Fondation Louis Vuitton. This large vessel covered in twelve glass sails, situated in the Bois de Boulogne, on the edge of avenue du Mahatma Gandhi, is attached to the Jardin d'Acclimatation. Set on a water garden created for the occasion, the building blends into the natural environment, amidst the wood and the garden, playing with light and mirror effects. -

Sketches of Frank Gehry
Mongrel Media Presents SKETCHES OF FRANK GEHRY DIRECTED BY SYDNEY POLLACK “I prefer the sketch quality, the tentativeness, the messiness, the appearance of in-progress rather than the assumption of total resolution and finality..” Running time: 82 mins Distribution 1028 Queen Street West Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com Publicity Bonne Smith Star PR Tel: 416-488-4436 Fax: 416-488-8438 E-mail: [email protected] High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/press.html Synopsis “Sketches of Frank Gehry" is director Sydney Pollack's first feature length documentary on the acclaimed architect, Frank O. Gehry. The two men have been friends for many years, and Pollack completed the film over a period of five years, starting in 2000. Frank Gehry loves to sketch; it is the beginning of his architectural process. And it is his love of the sketch that gave Pollack his first clues to the style of this documentary film. Beginning with Gehry’s own original sketches for each major project, the film explores Gehry’s process of turning these abstract drawings, first into tangible, three-dimensional models, often made simply of cardboard and scotch tape, then into finished buildings of titanium and glass, concrete and steel, wood and stone. To capture the sketch quality in the documentary, Pollack uses a combination of film and Mini DV (digital video) as his media. Spending countless hours in Gehry’s studio, on building sites, and in his home, this unobtrusive and quiet shooting style has captured, for the first time, the essence of Gehry’s unique architectural process, and his shy and elusive personality. -

Düsseldorf's Identity and Its Medienhafen
Marina Golovkina Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf – Abteilung für Informationswissenschaft Düsseldorf‘s Identity and Its Medienhafen 2018 1. Introduction Changes during the twentieth century, such as Second World War, the post-war years and active development of the economy in West Germany, influenced a lot the appearance of Düsseldorf, its architecture, and the life style of its citizens. The city, with a population of 639,407 residents, is located on an area of 217.41 km² and consists of 10 city districts with 50 city parts. In 1946, Düsseldorf became the capital of the state North Rhine-Westphalia and a major trade and economic center. In 1971, Messe Düsseldorf opened as an international trade fair that attracts every year a lot of visitors from all over the world. With economic growth, changes of the architectural appearance of the city began, especially with regard to the Rhine promenade. In the 80's, there was built the TV tower, the port area was renovated, partially rebuilt, and is known nowadays as the city district Medienhafen (media harbor) (Brasack, 1999). Modern buildings as New Zollhof, Hotel Hyatt Regency, “Roggendorf-Haus”, Colorium, etc. strongly transformed the face of the city. But are these new buildings something unique, special, and typical only for Düsseldorf? Or will this city loses its identity? In informational urbanism, “loss of identity” is called a possible problem area of typical cities of the knowledge society (Barth et al., 2017). In this paper we will consider the question of a city´s identity: What is it, its definition, and, finally, its role for the city and citizens: “The identity of the city bears on the identity of those living in it, and vice versa: the urban environment reflects human needs and values” (Haapala, 2003, p.
