CD, Carl Douglas, best known by his preferred nickname “CD," graduated from San Francisco’s Mission High School. As Talk of da Town’s outstanding First Tenor soloist, CD also sings Second Tenor, Baritone and Bass, as well as being Lead Singer in all ranges. He is also known for his fine songwriting skills. His idol is Smokey Robinson...and if you close your eyes while listening to him, you may not be able to tell the difference. Music is CD’s life. He has performed internationally and with various groups and has opened for many of his favorite artists, including the Temptations, Rod Stewart, James Brown, Ray Charles, Take 6 and Patti LaBelle. A song-&-dance man who gives his all to every performance, CD charms every audience with his engaging theatrics and infectious smile. - - - - - - - - - - Rodney James, native San Franciscan, began performing with several Bay Area vocal groups in the mid-‘60s. In the ‘70s he joined Talk of da Town, and in 2002 became a member of Natural Four, performing with them at the Monterey Blues Festival, the Jimmy Hendrix Experience in Seattle, the City of Oakland’s 150th Birthday Celebration, and Biscuits & Blues in San Francisco. Recently Rodney co- founded the increasingly popular company, Ta’Lor Made Entertainment, in which he headlines a Motown Revue, “Hitsville USA,” performing songs made famous by the Temptations, the Four Tops, the Spinners, the Pips, and other stars of the era. An acknowledged playwright/actor/producer appearing in various Bay Area productions, in 2005 Rodney realized a lifelong dream by writing Diva On Tour, a musical about a family dealing with the success of the daughter’s career. Rodney and his wife, Kay Ellison-James, co- produced and premiered the show in May 2006. His second play, No! Not My Son, about a family dealing with the son’s drug addiction, premiered in November 2008, and his third, A Dream Interrupted, A Life Reborn, celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness, is a tribute to Kay, a survivor of breast cancer. - - - - - - - - - - Stan Lockwood, native San Franciscan, graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and attended San Francisco State. His many years of singing began at Providence Baptist Church. Early inspirations were Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, then he was greatly influenced by Jerry Lawson and the Persuasions. Stan is most noted as one of the founding members of Talk of da Town, a world renowned a cappella group recently featured on NBC-TV’s hit show, Sing Off! He has also traveled and participated in the 'European Gospel Tour.' Stan's ear-to-ear smile lights up the stage and has the audience beaming right along with him. - - - - - - - - - - Chase Ruffin, born in Saint Louis, MO, began playing musical instruments in elementary school and college and was a member of the local Drum & Bugle Corps. Making his professional début as a drummer, he then was asked to be lead singer/front man for the band, which led directly to his becoming lead vocalist in many acts over the years, including: We Friends; the Defiant; the Newborn Band; Zodiac 5; Solid Ice; Tongue “N” Chic; Ivory Monkey and the Jazz Vocal Group. Sonata Pi. Currently Chase is a member of Jerry Lawson & Talk of the Town, and Hitsville: Legends Of Motown. Chase’s awards include Best Singer: Gold Artist Radio Indy Awards, and the USA Songwriting Competition Finalist Award. Comfortable in most any musical genre, and an accomplished all-around entertainer, singer/songwriter, vocal arranger, actor, published poet, Chase has recorded and toured extensively in the U.S. and Europe. - - - - - - - - - - Douglas Stepney, San Francisco resident, began singing in church choir when he was 6 years old. During his teen years, he sang with various groups throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1978 he had the privilege and pleasure of recording with Patti LaBelle. He also sang bass with his own group, the Johnny Lance Singers, which was featured on the track, “Quiet Times,” from Patti LaBelle’s debut solo album, Tasty. Since then Douglas has recorded with several Bay Area artists and groups. In 1986, Douglas joined the Talk of da Town, bringing to it his soulful, smooth, “boom-boom” bass. TODT has opened for Ray Charles, James Brown, the Temptations, Jay Leno, Joan Baez, George Benson and many others stellar artists. Douglas’ voice and passion for singing has allowed him to travel throughout the United States and Europe, singing everything from gospel to rhythm & blues to pop. For the past 5 years Douglas has sung bass with Jerry Lawson and Talk of the Town..

  • Lili Añel Singer/Songwriter/Recording Artist
Lili Añel singer/songwriter/recording artist For Lili Añel, music is a calling. There is nothing else she sees herself doing. “I don't think I could be anything but a singer-songwriter- performer; I truly believe this is why God put me here,” she said. The six-foot tall singer-songwriter, who has had a lengthy career she continues to build on, grew up in New York City. She discovered her passion while singing along to albums she listened to as a child and singing in church. Her grandfather encouraged her to keep singing if it made her happy. To this day, Lili thinks that is one of the forces that put her down the path she is on right now. Her mother also encouraged her. “My Grandfather was very influential and was instrumental in my deciding to pursue music full-time later on in life. I sang in the church choir and he would sneak in to the mass without telling me. I would ask him later, after letting him know that I saw him in the back, why he came to church at all and then leave before it was over. His response was “to hear you sing; I can hear your voice above the others.” After I discovered my musical self, my Mom was also influential. When she became ill with cancer, I was going to put music on hold and dedicate all my time to caring for her. She forbid me,” recalled Lili. “She told me if I stopped performing and she died, she'd haunt me – it was her way of saying that I should keep going.

  • Music Genres and Corporate Cultures
Music Genres and Corporate Cultures Music Genres and Corporate Cultures explores the workings of the music industry, tracing the often uneasy relationship between entertainment cor- porations and the artists they sign. Keith Negus examines the contrasting strategies of major labels like Sony and Universal in managing different genres, artists and staff, and assesses the various myths of corporate cul- ture. How do takeovers affect the treatment of artists? Why was Poly- Gram perceived as too European to attract US artists? Why and how did EMI Records attempt to change their corporate culture? Through a study of three major genres—rap, country and salsa—Negus investigates why the music industry recognises and rewards certain sounds, and how this influences both the creativity of musicians and their audiences. He explores why some artists get international promotion while others are neglected, and how performers are packaged as ‘world music’. Negus examines the tension between rap’s image as a spontaneous ‘music of the streets’ and the practicalities of the market, asks why execu- tives from New York feel uncomfortable when they visit the country music business in Nashville, and explains why the lack of soundscan sys- tems in Puerto Rican record shops affects salsa’s position on the US Bill- board chart. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with music industry per- sonnel in Britain, the United States and Japan, Music Genres and Corpo- rate Cultures shows how the creation, circulation and consumption of popular music is shaped by record companies and corporate business style while stressing that music production takes place within a broader cul- ture, not totally within the control of large corporations.

  • And a Letter to My Customers ===
--- == ROOTS & RHYTHM - SALE 01/12/2014 - AND A LETTER TO MY CUSTOMERS === --- Dear Friends Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. NOTE: Regrettably our holiday season was the slowest we've ever seen and it may mean that we will not be able to continue operating our business for very much longer. I am no longer a young man (not by a long shot!) and don't have the energy to pursue ways in which we may be able to promote the business. I would love to be able to settle down and listen to all the music I have gathered over the years in a relaxed setting and with critical reviewing faculties turned off. I would love to see Roots & Rhythm continue and thrive and even if we make it through the current crisis I would still like to get away from the stress of running a business so I am open to having someone else take over and move the company forward. If you are such a person or know such a person please contact me and we can discuss it. This list consists of a sale which we hope will raise enough money to help us get caught up with our suppliers and our taxes as well as some other pressing expenses. This list features 600 titles in all covering all the genres of music we specialize in and featuring books, DVDs and compact discs. This list includes manufacturer?s overstocks and deletions, our own excess inventory and a lot of titles that have been sitting on our shelves that have never been listed before.
