  • Grape Disease Control 2018
GRAPE DISEASE CONTROL, 2018 Bryan Hed, Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology, Penn State University, Lake Erie Regional Grape Research and Extension Center, North East PA 16428 ([email protected]) As many of you know Wayne Wilcox, who has annually provided us with an incredibly thorough grape disease management update each spring, has retired. Filling Wayne's shoes is going to be a tall task to say the least, and the search for his replacement goes on. For now, I will attempt to provide a brief summary of some of the pertinent changes in grape disease control that I hope will be useful for grape growers in the 2018 season. For consistency, I'll roughly be using Wayne's format from his previous newsletter from June of 2017. FUNGICIDE CHANGES, NEWS, & REVIEWS Here is some new, and sort of new information regarding grape fungicides in 2018. First, Aprovia/Aprovia Top. The active ingredient in Aprovia is solatenol (benzovindiflupyr), and while it does not represent a new chemical class for us grape growers (succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor or SDHI) it is one of those 'new generation' SDHIs that Wayne spoke of last year. The SDHI fungicides belong to FRAC Group 7, which also includes chemistries in products like Endura and Pristine (boscalid) and Luna Experience (fluopyram). Aprovia was available for use in most states last year, but has now been labeled for use in New York as well. As a solo product, Aprovia is very effective for the control of powdery mildew as trials in NY over several years have shown.

  • Calder and Sound
Gryphon Rue Rower-Upjohn Calderand Sound Herbert Matter, Alexander Calder, Tentacles (cf. Works section, fig. 50), 1947 “Noise is another whole dimension.” Alexander Calder 1 A mobile carves its habitat. Alternately seductive, stealthy, ostentatious, it dilates and retracts, eternally redefining space. A noise-mobile produces harmonic wakes – metallic collisions punctuating visual rhythms. 2 For Alexander Calder, silence is not merely the absence of sound – silence gen- erates anticipation, a bedrock feature of musical experience. The cessation of sound suggests the outline of a melody. 3 A new narrative of Calder’s relationship to sound is essential to a rigorous portrayal and a greater comprehension of his genius. In the scope of Calder’s immense œuvre (thousands of sculptures, more than 22,000 documented works in all media), I have identified nearly four dozen intentionally sound-producing mobiles. 4 Calder’s first employment of sound can be traced to the late 1920s with Cirque Calder (1926–31), an event rife with extemporised noises, bells, harmonicas and cymbals. 5 His incorporation of gongs into his sculpture followed, beginning in the early 1930s and continuing through the mid-1970s. Nowadays preservation and monetary value mandate that exhibitions of Calder’s work be in static, controlled environments. Without a histor- ical imagination, it is easy to disregard the sound component as a mere appendage to the striking visual mien of mobiles. As an additional obstacle, our contemporary consciousness is clogged with bric-a-brac associations, such as wind chimes and baby crib bibelots. As if sequestered from this trail of mainstream bastardi- sations, the element of sound in certain works remains ulterior.

  • Frost Resistance of Grapevine Cultivars of Different Origin
340 Section 4 Frost resistance of grapevine cultivars of different origin P. C!NDRIC, N. KoRAc Faculty of Agriculture, University of Novi Sad, YU-2100 Novi Sad, Yugoslavia S u m m a r y : The tescs of resistance to low temperature which included a large number of grapevine cultivars showed that the cultivars bore sign of their ecological-geographical and genetic origins with respect to the resistance to low temperature. The tests, conduaed over several years, consisted of exposing cuttings of annual shoots to low temperature in a cold chamber. The tests were repeated thrre times each winter, following the uniform method and time, in order to be able to distinguish relative differences in the degree of resistance between the cultivan tested. Most cultivars from Western Europe (occidenra/is NEGR., gallica Nl:'M.) had a high degree ofresistanee to low temperature. They tended to reach the peak of the resistance in mid winter. The cultivars from the continental part of the Balkans (pontica NEGR., balcanica NEGR.) were unanimously sensitive to low temperature. The cultivars from the warm Mediterranean climate of Southern Europe (pomica NEGR., balcanica NEGR. and occidentalis NEGR., iberica NEM.) were still more sensitive than the cultivars in the previously mentioned group. The wine cultivars developed from imerspecific crosses of European grapevines and American species exhibited a high degree of resistance in the middle and at the end of winter while the hybrids vinifera x amurensis were highly resistant at the beginning and in the middle of winter. Both groups can be used as donors of resistance to low temperature in programs of breeding cold hardy grapevine cultivars.

The Kosovar wine cluster: A booster for regional development? Gajo M. VANKA1, Wim J.M. HEIJMAN2 1Department of Social Sciences, Economics of Consumers and Households Group, Wageningen University, Wageningen, the Netherlands 2Department of Social Sciences, Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy Group, Wageningen University, Wageningen, the Netherlands Abstract: Kosovo is an economy in transition with a high unemployment, a young population and structural problems. Clusters could be considered as an appropriate approach to develop the region. Th is paper deals with the economic pro- spects of the Kosovar wine cluster, its current opportunities and the introduction of new approaches. Th e analysis was based on the Porter’s innovation theory and the diamond model. Th e Kosovar wine sector could be a promising example for the future cluster development. Wine has a long history in Kosovo although wine consumption is not widespread. Th is paper presents the main problems and opportunities within this sector, describing its structural changes and current developments. Th e study aims to introduce its readers to the potential that the cluster development can off er as well as to understand the local circumstances. Its main focus is therefore to introduce the advantages and opportunities that clusters could bring to this sector, considering the three pillars of sustainable development, namely economic growth, environmen- tal and social development, and achieving competitiveness. Key words: agribusiness sector, business clusters, competitiveness, diamond model, Kosovo, Porter’s innovation theory, Serbia, sustainable development, wine. This research examines sustainable development winemaking all makes this sector attractive to foreign in Kosovo by focusing on the interaction between agencies and investors.

  • Matching Grape Varieties to Sites Are Hybrid Varieties Right for Oklahoma?
Matching Grape Varieties to Sites Are hybrid varieties right for Oklahoma? Bruce Bordelon Purdue University Wine Grape Team 2014 Oklahoma Grape Growers Workshop 2006 survey of grape varieties in Oklahoma: Vinifera 80%. Hybrids 15% American 7% Muscadines 1% Profiles and Challenges…continued… • V. vinifera cultivars are the most widely grown in Oklahoma…; however, observation and research has shown most European cultivars to be highly susceptible to cold damage. • More research needs to be conducted to elicit where European cultivars will do best in Oklahoma. • French-American hybrids are good alternatives due to their better cold tolerance, but have not been embraced by Oklahoma grape growers... Reasons for this bias likely include hybrid cultivars being perceived as lower quality than European cultivars, lack of knowledge of available hybrid cultivars, personal preference, and misinformation. Profiles and Challenges…continued… • The unpredictable continental climate of Oklahoma is one of the foremost obstacles for potential grape growers. • It is essential that appropriate site selection be done prior to planting. • Many locations in Oklahoma are unsuitable for most grapes, including hybrids and American grapes. • Growing grapes in Oklahoma is a risky endeavor and minimization of potential loss by consideration of cultivar and environmental interactions is paramount to ensure long-term success. • There are areas where some European cultivars may succeed. • Many hybrid and American grapes are better suited for most areas of Oklahoma than
