BETA ALPHA PHI DELTA CHI VOLUME 62 ISSUE 1 May 2019 ΦΔΧ Beta Alpha Particle Volume 62 Issue 1 Editor’s Note Dear Brothers, A commonality which exists in all renditions of pharmacy schools across the country is the degree of hard work and professionalism invested into achieving a degree. Student pharmacists are bound to endless hours of studying, committing to rotation hours, and working various jobs at community sites, hospitals, and more. It is this standard of diligence that transforms us from college students shrouded in naivety and ingenuity, into narrow minded professionals within our practice, and occasionally within our lives. The transformation from a student to a master of one’s profession is truly an enlightening experience that is required for one to become a well- rounded and committed pharmacist. Finding the remaining youth in one dedicated to our practice however, can therefore be a challenge at times. Recognizing this, the following content within this year’s issue of the Beta Alpha Particle was chosen by its editors to host the theme and character of its very own comic book edition. A comic book is something that is held by children in their nascency to explore anything that one’s imagination can captivate, whether it be dreams, idealism, or fantasies that remove us from reality. Superheroes, cartoons or anything within the scope of fiction can be presented in a comic book in effort of discerning one’s perception of actuality, and create a sense of introspection which forms creativity. It is this creativity that spawned the direction of this year’s Beta Alpha Particle, and made this work a joyful departure from the day to day monotony of a student pharmacist’s life. Those dedicated to the profession of pharmacy can learn from an elementary concept such as a comic book, that nascency and youthfulness can be rediscovered in simple forms. This edition’s editors hope you enjoy the endeavors and achievements of the Beta Alpha Chapter in the 2018-2019 academic year in the 62nd edition of the Beta Alpha Particle, and wish you a colloquial message for which we find relevance in our title as the “Beta Alpha” Chapter: Better Always. Each day in office came with a new challenge which caused me to learn more about myself, in regards to my leader- ship, work ethic, and love for the Beta Alpha Chapter and its brothers. I owe my gratitude to our brothers who aided me throughout the year and contributed to our overall success as a chapter in terms of philan- thropy, professionalism and service. Without their help and assistance, many of the projects we have undertaken throughout this past year would not have been possible. Additionally, I received continuous support and guidance from our chap- ter advisor, Brother Dr. Joseph Etzel, who is an alumnus of both the St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Beta Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Chi. Dr. Etzel provided me an unrelent- ing spirit of brotherhood for our fraternity and chapter, which aided me in the toughest of situations. His continuous passion for service to our University and Fraternity provided me much motivation in accomplishing many endeavors that I would’ve once thought were not possible. In passing the torch to our new Worthy Chief Counselor, Brother Andy Choi, I reflect on this past year as an experience to both myself as a Brother of Phi Delta Chi, and as a student at St. John’s University. Throughout all the tumultuous moments and hardships that it took to lead the Beta Alpha Chapter for one year, it was an experience that I NISHANTH “OFFSET” VISWANATH would never trade for anything else. s Worthy Vice Counselor for the 2018-2019 year for the Beta Alpha chapter of Phi Delta Chi, my experience has not been any- Worthy Vice Counselor thing short of inspiring, and not because of anything I did my- A self, but because of the dedication and passion towards the fra- ternity I had the honor of witnessing in my station. Every worthy and chair position in the Beta Alpha chapter provides its own unique set of challenges, and the operation of the fraternity is reflective of the ef- forts put in by the people who run it. I am proud to have been part of what I believe is one of the greatest executive board I have seen thus far. My primary role was to support the Worthy Chief Counselor in managing the fraternity and everyone who held a position there. My one goal set out for myself when I ran for this position was to be able to help advance the fraternity under the guiding hand of an exceptional Chief Counselor. I am elated to say that my obligation to this fraterni- ty was more than satisfied because of the outstanding effort of our Worthy Chief Counselor, Brother Nishanth Viswanath and by extension the rest of the chapter. I was there to provide support to a Chief Counselor who rarely needed it, and was one of the most inspiring leaders the Beta Alpha Chapter has ever had from my years in it. It goes to show the capability of our executive board. I helped with discussions about the future of our fra- ternity, our academic and philanthropic obligations,, in addition to help- ing maintain our relationship with our school and the rest of the commu- nity. This was not an easy year, in fact it was extremely difficult at points; this difficulty reflected in the painstaking efforts of the Chief Counselor and the rest of the board members. To be able to witness this and be a part of this is, simply put, a blessing. NOAH “MONK” SAMUEL I sincerely believe that the position of Worthy Vice Counselor has a lot of potential to grow beyond a position of support, and I have seen that happen over my tenure in the rule. This great service to the fraternity is an amazing undertaking,
