THE ROLE OF COOPERATIVES IN AGRIBUSINESS SUSTAINABLITY Presented by Kingsley Makiyoni- (Cooperative and Marketing Development Coordinator-CDF Malawi) 1 Brief background information • The Cooperative movement in Malawi uses the three- tier. Hawaii Island Seed Exchange Summary The Hawaii Island Seed Exchange was established in 2003 as a way for farmers and gardeners island-wide to share saved seed, cuttings, roots, huli, and plants in order to increase food self-reliance on Hawaii Island. In recent years the Seed Exchange has been hosted at the Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Gardens on the Summer Solstice (June 21). Admission is free. Due to the potential danger of unknowingly spreading the “little fire ant” (Wasmannia auropunctata), none of the following are allowed at the exchange: bare rooted plants, seeds in pods or husks, leaf material, or plants in soil. Frederick Attorney-Adviser Cooperative Services Division Agricultural Cooperative Service U.S. Department of Agriculture This report analyzes the problems inactive members pose for the cooperative character, legal status, and management efficiency of an agricultural cooperative. Bylaws and policies to correct any weaknesses in a cooperative’s current approach to inactive members are discussed and examples provided. Key Words: Bylaws, cooperatives, equity, law, members, structure Cooperative Information Report Number 37 Issued January 1989 Reviewed and Approved for Reprinting October 1991 r Preface Many cooperatives have a far greater number of inactive members than can be attributed to crop failure, illness, a decision not to produce a crop marketed by a particular cooperative, and other temporary conditions that make patron- age impossible. Inactive members make it difficult for a cooperative to operate in accordance with cooperative principles. They may bring into question a cooperative’s compliance with its incorporation statute, laws providing antitrust protection and preferable tax status, and other legal priorities. They may also reduce management efficiency. Previous studies document the extent of inactive memberships. This report focuses on the problems created and suggests measures to correct weaknesses in individual cooperative programs concerning inactive members. Many of the ideas were gathered from written and personal contacts with managers and professional advisers of farmer cooperatives. Some issues, such as the extent of the fiduciary duty of current cooperative leaders to former and inactive members, are in a state of review and possible evolution. Cooperatives will have to continue to be alert for developments in this area for some time to come. -

Choose a partner and pick a counter (there are 12 different counters) to form a team. 2. Each team will take turns to throw the dice and move the number of places shown on the dice up the board. If you reach the end then you turn around and work your way back down again. 3. When you land on a number you should go and find the poster with the same number. This will be somewhere around the room. 4. Read the information on the poster and look out for any: NAMES, PLACES, NUMBERS, FOOD or DATES. 5. Write these in the spaces on your clue sheet. 6. Tick off the number of the poster below so that you know which you have visited. 7. Now return to the board, throw the dice again, and move to another number and visit that poster. 8. Keep going until you have been to all the posters. 9. Now return to the start and collect your Story Sheet. Fill in the blanks to complete the story. You should have collected all the information you need on your clue sheet. -

As the Cuban state relinquishes top-down controls to achieve increased productivity and innovation, agricultural cooperatives are viewed as a more productive model to increase Cuba’s self-sufficiency and reduce the country’s reliance on food imports by incentivizing production though market incentives while maintaining a socialized form or production. This thesis focuses on if, and how, agricultural cooperatives utilize the food sovereignty approach to food security in Cuba. Specifically, it examines if, and how, agricultural cooperatives are able to increase domestic production for local consumption and provide food access to its citizens. Furthermore, this thesis explores the changing dynamic between the Cuban State and agricultural cooperatives – one that is both supportive as well as challenging – and how it can affect the application of food sovereignty in Cuba. 2 May 15, 2017. United States Department of Agriculture Opportunities Agricultural gE;vyEat ive in Cooperatives Cooperative Information Report 25 A Leader’s Program for Youth Preface A committee of cooperative leaders working with youth organizations and programs asked Agricultural Cooperative Service to develop a O-month program to provide guidelines for sponsoring Scout Explorer, 4-H, Future Farmers of America, Future Home Makers, and other groups included in the 18 to 20 youth organizations with whom cooperative business leaders work. This publication is the result. This information may help cooperatives as they work with teachers, advisers, Extension agents, and others in their youth programs. Ideas presented in this publication become more effective when applied to local situations with business and professional leaders involved in developing such programs. Emphasis is on the role of cooperatives in the American business system, how this system is organized and operates, and its opportunities for employment. Suggested Use for Publication Information is designed for nine monthly meetings to coincide with the school year. Leaders have the option to change the suggested schedule. The first meeting discusses organization of the series. The second and third cover basic information on business organization. Meetings four through seven are devoted to visiting various types of business organizations, including another cooperative. Meeting eight returns to the sponsoring organization. Meeting nine is a recognition program with parents and leaders. Meeting outlines contain a suggested introductory statement for leaders, questions that may help youth to develop their business and career interests, and a suggested optional quiz. The information may be used as a special youth program on cooperatives in the American business system, as a study of local business organizations and operations, or to further career interests in purchasing, distribution, finance, law, accounting, or others as they pertain to local business operations including cooperatives.
