Traditionally, HEIs were expected only to perform their core duties of teach- ing, research and extension activities; however, the scenario has now changed. They are now expected to also exhibit their societal importance through these three functions, by taking their knowledge to nearby communities, as a form of social responsibility. Research gaps have been identified in the systematic mapping and location analysis on the nature of distributional pattern of such geoarchaeosites from the perspective of planning a number of geotourism circuits. With application of nearest neighbour analysis and GIS based digital cartography, this paper is an attempt to analyze space-time dimensions of geosites bearing the traces of past lives with special concentration on our predecessors. With the application of network analysis, shortest route planning is obtained for sustainable tourist movement. G.J.I.S.S.,Vol.4(3):148-156 (May-June, 2015) ISSN: 2319-8834 Socio -Cultural Changes of Tribes and Their Impacts on Environment with Special Reference to Santhal in West Bengal Subrata Guha & Md Ismail** **Department of Geography, Aliah University, Kolkata, 700014 Abstract A tribe is a group of people living under primitive condition and still not popularly known to more modern culture. There are numbers of tribes living all over India as well as various parts in the World. More than 55% of the total tribal population of India are living in central India like Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, and Madhya Pradesh and remaining tribal population is concentrated in the Himalayan belt, Western India, the Dravidian region and Andaman, Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands. According to D.N Majumdar, tribes as social group with popular association endogamous with not any particular of functions governed by tribal ruler or otherwise, united in language or dialect recognizing social distance with other tribes or castes. Out of them, Santhal is an important tribe which contributes more than 50% of the Indian tribal population. The paper tries to explain heartening situation of Indian tribes with reference to Santhal communities in Birbhum district and also finds out various cultural as well as food habits, religious practices, social system like marriage and various types of awareness. Social change is one of the important issues which can determined the level of development and change in the pattern of life style. L.M Lewis believes that tribal societies are small in scale are restricted in the spatial and temporal range of their social, legal and political relations and possess a morality, a religion and world view of corresponding dimensions.

Asian Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies Available online at www.ajms.co.in Volume1, Issue 4, November 2013 ISSN: 2321-8819 Morphometric Analysis of Birbhum District Prolay Mondal Research Scholar, Dept. of Geography, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan Abstract: Lateritic soil of Birbhum district made a different topography which is known as “khoai region”. Topographically/ landscape heterogeneity is taken place here. To understand the heterogeneity, in this paper, an attempt has been made to study the detail morphometric characteristics of Birbhum district. For detailed study, we used LISS-III data for preparing digital elevation model (DEM), and geographical information system (GIS) was used in evaluation of linear, areal and relief aspects of morphometric parameters. All the morphometric attribute of this area have been prepared using Arc-Hydro Tool; and Surface Tool in Arc-GIS 9.3 software & ASTER (DEM). Different thematic maps i.e. drainage density, slope, relief, superimposed profile, and longitudinal profiles have been prepared by using Arc-GIS software. I have computed 20 morphometric parameters of all aspects. Based on all morphometric parameters analysis it is evident that the streams gradients become steeper (aggradation) or less steep (degradation) due to excess deposition or erosion of sediment, respectively. Aggradation and degradation are often the symptoms of a problem within this district, such as changes in land use within the district that occur over a broad area and affect the stream's hydrology. It is caused by a very large storm event or a localized disturbance, such as earthwork without proper sediment controls. It actually changes shape which is very much associated with Rills and gullies erosion.
