Dear Parents, Your son/daughter is interested in becoming a member of the Cheerleading Team for the school year. If elected to be a cheerleader, there are specific responsibilities which your son/daughter must assume in order to qualify for and to remain an active member of the team.

I. ORGANIZATION Initials: _____ a. The purpose of the SPHS Pep Squad is to: a. Create school spirit, pride and loyalty. b. Develop responsibility, teach self-respect, encourage honest effort, strive for perfection and develop character. c. Teach teamwork and pride in a quality performance through maintaining high standards. d. Promote interest in school activities and perform at school functions. e. Participate in community events and community service. b. Coaches are responsible for: a. … the daily running and activities of JV and Varsity teams b. … administering all disciplinary procedures c. The Coaches may place certain restrictions on team members. c. The SPHS Pep Squad Season consists of the following: a. Spring – Tryouts and Team Fundraising b. Summer – Camp and Curriculum c. Fall – Football, , and d. Winter – , Soccer, Wrestling and d. Athletic credits may be issued upon completion of the entire athletic season at the discretion of the Coaches and/or Athletic Director based on participation and performance evaluation. e. The SPHS Pep Squad eligible athletes will participate in the school-wide Winter Sports Banquet upon completion of the entire Pep Squad Season. II. ELIGIBILITY Initials: _____ a. a. Due to the current situation, sports physicals are due prior to the commencement of practice and waived for tryouts only. Each athlete must have a complete sports physical exam before the official start of season. b. Pre-existing medical conditions must be disclosed by the athlete prior to try-outs including braces, wraps, or other physical support. c. Athletes must also have a completed medical emergency form submitted through the on-line athletic clearance (www.sphsathletics.org). IV. CHARACTER Initials: _____ a. The Cardinal Code of Conduct and all school rules must be followed. b. Team members should be leaders within the school and set a good example at all times. c. Team members should be above reproach maintaining good personal appearance and habits that cannot be criticized. d. Smoking, drinking and/or drug use are grounds for suspension or dismissal by the Coach. e. A member must be courteous and friendly to all other team members and the student body. f. A member must be courteous and friendly to other teams and visitors. g. A member must be respectful to the Coaches and a credit to the school. V. TRY-OUTS 2020-2021 Initials: _____ a. Try-outs will consist of 5 days of instructional videos and electronic video performance submission. b. Athletes will learn and perform one spirit cheer and one dance to be recorded and evaluated by a panel of judges & coaches. c. Athletes will be asked one question: Why do you want to be a part of the SPHS Pep Squad? Athletes will begin their video submission by introducing themselves, stating their current grade level and answering the question. Spirit and enthusiasm throughout the submission is strongly encouraged to maximize points possible. VI. TEAM PLACEMENT Initials: _____ a. Team Options for 2020-2021 a. Varsity Mascot (grades 9-12) 1. Mascot will perform at outdoor events in the mascot suit (borrowed) and has the opportunity to purchase performance attire to perform at indoor events. b. Junior Varsity Sideline (grades 9-11) 1. Minimum 10 + 2 Alternates (Max. 12) c. Varsity Sideline Performance (grades 10-12) 1. Minimum 12, maximum 18, including 2 Alternates d. JV Sideline team members will perform sideline cheers, chants, band and sideline dances at games and parades.

e. Varsity Sideline Performance team will perform sideline cheers, chants, band and sideline dances at games and parades, including half-time performance show cheers (cheer, dance, stunt) during Varsity half-times and all-school rallies. f. Members of the Varsity Sideline Performance team have the opportunity to attend Optional Summer Camp and join the Optional Competition Team. g. The competition team may be formed with a minimum of 16 qualified athletes from the Varsity Sideline Performance Team. VII. TEAM LEADERS/CAPTAINS Initials: _____ a. The roles and responsibilities of Team Leaders/Captains are as follows: a. Communicate team related updates and reminders. b. Lead group discussions and provide input for team decisions. c. Coordinate voluntary snack schedule and goody bags. d. Schedule spirit item making team bonding events. e. No more than 2 team leaders per team including 1 All-Squad captain. VIII. ATTENDANCE Initials: _____ a. All students who participate in school activities must be in full-day attendance the day the activity is scheduled. Full-day attendance is from the beginning of the first hour and remaining until the close of the last hour of classes. To participate in a practice, a student must attend school 4 hours (4 periods). b. If a member is ill and misses ANY activity, he/she must be at HOME or seeking medical appointments. c. If a member misses ANY practice, he/she may be replaced in the performance(s) practiced at the time of the absence. d. An absence must be documented by the parent in writing with the Head Coach. It is the parent’s responsibility to call or text the coach. e. All medical appointments, etc. should be scheduled so they do not interfere with team activities. Medical appointments scheduled during practice will be unexcused unless it is a medical emergency. f. All Alternates will attend all practices and performances during the training season and may be cut or added after Semester 2 grade check. g. All members are required to attend each activity in its entirety. h. Work or class is not considered an excuse for missing any activity. i. School detention, etc. will not be considered an excuse for missing any team practice or scheduled activity. j. Participation includes but is not limited to: a. Attending Practice – Summer, Fall, Winter b. Attending Games – Fall and Winter c. Attending Functions – SPHS Rallies, City of SP Parades, etc.

d. Spirit Squad Events – Could be poster making, rock painting, goody bags, etc. IX. DISCIPLINE Initials: _____ a. Athletes may be removed from a routine, “benched” from practice and/or a game, function, or Spirit Squad event for any the following: a. Tardiness or Absence from any team activity: 1. Practice, Game, SPHS Function, Spirit Squad Event, SP Community Service Event b. Disrespect toward Coach or Captains. c. Inappropriate behavior and language d. Uniform inspection and/or inappropriate dress (any piece of the uniform, inappropriate hair or make-up, forgotten accessories, etc.) e. Detention, unexcused absence from SPHS b. Unexcused Absences may result in the following progressive discipline: a. 1 X UNEXCUSED ABSENCE – Athletes may be benched up to one quarter of a game. b. 2 X UNEXCUSED ABSENCES – Athletes may be benched up to one half of a game. c. 3 X UNEXCUSED ABSENCES – Athletes may be pulled from the next performance routine and benched up to one half of the game. d. 4 X UNEXCUSED ABSENCES – Athletes may be benched for at least one half of the game, the current and subsequent performances. A parent conference is required at this point. e. 5 X UNEXCUSED ABSENCES – Athletes may be dismissed from the team and will not receive cheer credits nor an invitation to the team awards night. c. The following violations will result in automatic dismissal: a. Smoking, drinking or drug use in uniform as shown in pictures, videos, or in person during any part of the SPHS Pep Squad season including Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter. b. Violation of the Cardinal Code of Conduct. c. Inappropriate Social Media, including but not limited to: 1. Pictures, posts, messages, videos supporting, promoting, or using any drugs, alcohol, sexual conduct, bullying, etc. d. Suspension means not participating in team functions for one week. 1. Two suspensions will result in dismissal from the team. X. TRANSPORTATION Initials: _____ a. Parents/Guardians are responsible for transporting their athletes to and from all events, including authorized emergency contacts. b. Carpool transportation may be available upon district approval.

c. District transportation may be provided for approved events at the determination of the coaches and Athletic Director. XI. FUNDRAISING Initials: _____ a. All members are encouraged to participate in all fundraising which is generated by the team b. Team fundraising may be applied to the cost of team uniforms, equipment, and expenses. XII. PERFORMANCE ATTIRE Initials: _____ a. Each member may purchase an optional custom fit uniform (to be kept by the athlete and used for a minimum of 2 seasons): a. Shell (JV) or Long-Sleeve (VAR), and skirt b. Each member may purchase or borrow performance accessories: a. Poms (vinyl or metallic JV/VAR), Performance Bow c. Personal performance items such as spanks, crop (JV long-sleeve) and athletic shoes will be available to purchase on the team store. These items cannot be borrowed or returned for credit. d. Each member may purchase the following optional items: ​ ​ a. Bag, megaphone, Spirit Jersey, Warm-ups (pants/jacket) e. Team members will receive one team t-shirt. f. SPUSD can provide performance attire and accessory items at no cost to the member: a. Items will be checked out at the beginning of the season and returned at the end of the season (shell, crop, skirt, and poms). b. Uniforms provided by the district will not be ordered to custom fit to each member; generic quantities and sizes are available. g. Each member will be required to maintain good condition and cleanliness of his/her uniform. Uniforms cannot be altered in any way. h. Team members are responsible for replacing lost, damaged, or stolen items that are purchased and/or borrowed. i. Any financial problems should be discussed with the Head Coach. XIII. OPTIONAL CLINICS AND CAMP 2020-2021 Initials: _____ a. All Varsity Sideline Performance team members are encouraged to attend summer clinics and camp although they are optional. a. Clinics may be in house or at a designated training facility and will be scheduled throughout the summer. b. Athletes who do not attend camp will be responsible for learning cheer and dance routines at practice and on their own time and are subject to evaluation before added to any routine. XIV.
