Headteacher’s Message

GENEROSITY And so another academic year draws to a close and the summer break awaits. The summer term has been full endeavour, achievement and

celebration as the newsletter bears testament. The academy has much to TRUTH celebrate and is looking forward to embracing the future with positivity and energy as new and exciting challenges arise. I would like to draw particular attention to the inaugural LAAT awards ceremony held recently at which our two nominees, Jamie Smith (pupil) and Mrs June Howman (Staff) won awards. Congratulations to both on their awards and their roles as RESPECT RESPECT ambassadors for the academy.

On Tuesday 17th July I had the pleasure of attending the school concert. An ensemble of both students and staff put on an Andrew Lloyd Webber 70th Birthday tribute evening, showcasing talent and performance skills. FORGIVENESS My thanks and admiration to all concerned.

JUSTICE May I take this opportunity to wish you all a safe, restful and peaceful summer break. We look forward to welcoming you back in September

refreshed, invigorated and ready for the fray. JUSTICE JUSTICE

Year 7 are the District Rounders Champions !!!!

Huge congratulations go to the William Lovell Year 7 girls rounders team who have won the Boston District Rounders Tournament held at Boston High School on Tuesday 12th June 2018. Excellent matches were played against Middlecott, Haven High, Boston High School, Thomas Cowley and and the William Lovell team were the overall champions. Throughout the event, our girls showed a wide range of excellent rounders skills in both batting and fielding. There were some excellent whole rounders scored from long hits and a good number of excellent catches to get batters from the other team out. The team also demonstrated an outstanding level of tactics, knowledge and game play and it was lovely to see them grow in confidence and excitement throughout the evening.

We now go on to represent the Boston area in the next round match to be played at Spalding High School on finals night, Wednesday 4th July 2018 !! Keep your fingers crossed for us then and wish us luck !!

Team players were Jasmin Johnson, Maya Thomas, Sydney Lovelace, Courtney Ellis, Megan Hall, Gerda Jucinskyte, Rebekah Kelly (Capt) and Daisy Bradshaw (Capt).

Year 7 Rounders Team

As Boston area champions, William Lovell Y7 Girls rounders team went further afield to play the next round match against Spalding High School. It was a beautiful sunny evening and the girls were a complete mix of excitement and nerves ready to play this next round. After loosing the coin toss, we were put into bat first to face 20 good bowls. Unfortunately we had a quick succession of our good batters put ‘out’ early and we struggled to hit the ball far enough to score whole or half rounders confidently. When Spadling came into bat they had a significant number of long hitters and regularly scored whole rounders putting our fielders under pressure. Half time score William Lovell 2 ½ Spalding 12 ½ .

During the second innings we produced some improved hitting and added another 5 rounders to our total, already not enough to beat Spalding before their second batting innings. The final score was William Lovell 7 ½ Spalding 24 rounders. Congratulations to Spalding High School who go onto the next round, William Lovell remain Boston district winners and we will return again next year with even more confidence due to this fantastic experience. I would like congratulate all the Y7 girls involved with the addition of Evelynn Lawson. Thank you to Mr Hopwood for giving up his time to come with us to the fixture for extra support. September brings a return to the netball season !!!!

Thank you and well done, I am very proud. Mrs Cooper

Fourteen year 10 students from the Academy were invited to help run the Boston Primary Schools’ Tri Golf Festival, which took place on Friday 22nd and Friday 29th June 2018 at Boston Golf Club. Fifteen primary schools from the Boston area took part in the two-day event.

Tri-Golf is a FUN, energetic, version of golf, which young children in primary schools can enjoy with their classmates as they hit the target with their first golf shots. Tri-Golf is genuinely inclusive as it suits all abilities; every child can succeed in the games and with the flexibility between individual play and team interaction, it engages well with youngsters who might not want to play a traditional team sport. Tri-Golf promotes ‘Skills for Life’ attributes including co-operation, good sportsmanship and concentration and is designed to be used across curriculum learning.

Prom Night Celebrations Friday 66h July 2018!

All the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood Oscar Ceremony could not outshine William Lovell’s year 11 students as they arrived, in film star style, at their very own end of school prom!

A variety of transport came down the drive, a New Holland Tractor, Ford Mustang, VW Beetle Hotrod, Aston Martin DB7, Porche 911 and Lamourghini to set down our students in the warm evening sunshine to be greeted by proud family, friends and staff.

Prom Night Celebrations 6h July 2018!

Glistening sequins and wide smiles were the order of the evening as everyone took their turn to be photographed before heading into the main event. Black and gold balloons and bow adorned chairs added to the glamour of the evening. Music played and food was served. Selfies galore were taken as precious memories were shared and saved. It was wonderful to see friends gather for the official group photographs. Delighted staff were invited to have their photographs taken with students – all as proud as punch!

Later in the evening, everyone voted for their Prom King and Prom Queen. Suitably crowned, Chloe Halstead and George Andrew took their bow on the dance floor. Well done!

As usual, with events such as these, preparation and planning began last year. Our students organised a variety of fundraising activities including; a Walkathon, cake sale and non uniform days.

A special mention must go to Mrs. Stafford who cajoled, encouraged and supported the students at every point. Particular thanks must also go to all the staff who supported the students on the night, Miss Browne for all her support, not only for the Prom itself, but for the end of year photographs, sweatshirts and Year Books.

I’m sure you will join with us as we wish our Class of 2018 all the luck and success in the world! We will miss them!

FMSP-Maths Sessions

On Friday 22nd June, twelve Year 10 pupils went to a FMSP day at QEGS . They enjoyed several workshops on how to solve problems using maths – one workshop even included some juggling. On Tuesday 26th June twelve Year 9 girls and twelve Year 10 girls went to a ‘Maths and Mechanics display’ where they saw how to balance tins on their rims and also balanced another pupil on a plank of wood by measuring and calculating forces. Both sessions were a valuable insight of how Maths can be used to model everyday situations, and has hopefully inspired some to take Maths at A level. Mrs Heathcote

Year 10 Work experience

Congratulations to the Year 10s for completing their work experience placements, this year’s cohort have received offers of jobs, apprenticeships and brilliant references from employers. Well done!

RAF Coningsby Catering For my week of work experience I went to RAF Coningsby where I worked in the Catering department of the Officer’s mess. During my time there I helped the chefs prepare the meals for lunch and dinner. These meals consisted of a variety dishes such as fishcakes with sauce, Quorn pizza, marinated chicken and wraps with nutritious fillings. There was also a selection of sides and additional extras such as a salad bar which I also helped with. When all of this was ready, I was allowed to help serve the meals to the officers, some of whom were pilots, both from the UK and abroad. As well as this valuable experience, I took the opportunity to have a tour of one of the hangars of Typhoons where I got to look around the outside of the plane then sit inside the cockpit. I learned how the 2 Rolls Royce engines work and watched the planes take off for their displays from next to the runway. I am pleased I went on this placement as it gave me an insight into working life in the RAF and I got to meet the friendly people who work there. Sarah Plowman

Ark Wildlife Park I decided to spend my weeks work experience at Ark Wildlife Park where I worked as one of the keepers to help with the care and maintenance of the various animals at the park. During my time at this placement I helped prepare meals, clean out enclosures and learn about the different animals. I took the opportunities to go into the enclosures with animals such as coatis and racoons and help clean out and feed them. I am very glad that I chose to go on work experience as I now know what it is like to have the responsibilities of a job and it also helped me make a decision on where I would like to go once I leave school. The people there were very helpful and made my time there enjoyable. Zara Gartside

William Lovell Academy welcome primary school students to Year 5 Taster days and Year 6 Transition Day

On the 3rd and 6th July, we were delighted to welcome Year 5 primary students to school to participate in our taster days. Students from seven different primary schools attended over the 2 days and took part in a variety of activities to include, PE, Maths quiz, Science experiments, Music, Art, Geography and ICT. All students had the opportunity to visit our canteen and enjoy a courtesy lunch. Wonderful to see the students enjoy the day and hope to see many of them at William Lovell in the future.

Equally enjoyable, we welcomed our Year 6 students to the Academy for their transition day on 4th July. There were many nervous faces in the morning but as the day progressed, they relaxed and enjoyed activities arranged. The students worked in groups and released a balloon to represent their journey during the time they will spend at the Academy. We look forward to beginning that journey with them in September.

Music Concert

Our final show of the year was particularly special for a few reasons; not only was it a celebration of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 70th birthday this year and 50 years since he wrote his first musical, it was my final concert at William Lovell.

We had performances of Webber’s most famous songs, sung by years 7 to 10, former pupils, and even staff! We began the show with a special staff performance of ‘Teacher’s Pet’ from The School of Rock, Webber’s newest show based on the film of the same name. Mr Thorpe led the performance from the keyboard, I played the bass, and Gabriele Buivydaite added the drums. The backing singers were Miss Browne, Mrs Gosling, Mrs Lamyman, Mrs Liversidge, Mrs Sharpe, and Mrs Stafford, in suitable rock school attire! Rosie Mahon and Todd Vizard-Jones then treated us to a beautiful duet from one of Webber’s lesser-known musicals, ‘I be- lieve my heart’ from The Woman in White, and Holly Rowett sang ‘I don’t know how to love him’ from Jesus Christ Superstar. We then had a couple of songs from Evita: Mrs Liversidge performed the anthem ‘Don’t cry for me Argentina’ and Gabriele Buivydaite sang the reflec- tive ‘Another suitcase in another hall.’

We then ended the 1st half with a rousing performance of ‘Macavity’ from Misty-Rose Reeson and Jasmine Smith, and I sang the memorable ‘Memory’ from Cats. Mrs Lamyman introduced the section with a poem by T. S. Eliot.

I opened the 2nd half with ‘As if we never said goodbye’ from Sunset Boulevard, before a selection of songs from Webber’s longest running musical, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’. Former pupil, Sam Argyle, sang ‘Music of the Night’, Holly Rowett performed the moving ‘Learn to be lonely’, and I ended the section with ‘Wishing you were somehow here again’. Before ending the concert with choral selections from Joseph, Gabriele Buivydaite sang ‘Tell me on a Sunday’ from the show of the same name. We then ended the show with selections from Webber’s first musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Lexie Moncrieff introduced the section with a prologue, before the whole cast came together for the medley. The singing was led by Todd Vizard-Jones (Joseph), Gabriele Buivydaite, Rosie Mahon and Holly Rowett (Narrators), and former pupils Harriet Argyle (Narrator) and Sam Argyle (Pharoah). We completed our tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber with a powerful performance of ‘Any dream will do’, led by Todd.

Huge thanks to the staff members and pupils who helped put my final show together, especially Mr Allen, Mrs Liversidge, Ashley Pope, and Mr Thorpe. Beautiful singing was heard from all, and we raised over £300 from tickets and raffle! This will be split between St Barnabas Hospice, the Butterfly Hospice and Cancer Research UK.

Celebrating Success in English!

Ms Kamsika and Ms Keightley were delighted to spend time this week celebrating the many successes of Year 7 students in English this term.

Taking the theme of bullying from our class novel, ‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness, students worked hard to prepare some fantastic presentations. These included songs, plays, posters and even a dance!

The event culminated in awarding a number of students with certificates recognising their achievements in English.

Well done to all involved!
