Apulia Region (Italy) APULIA REGION (ITALY) At HALL 7 – BOOTH 181 APULIA REGION: THE LAND BETWEEN TWO SEAS Apulia is a region in the south east of Italy, a land of light, history and culture, where tradition mingles with knowledge, a crossroads for trade and exchanges between Europe and the Orient. With its roots steeped in ancient history, Apulia has always been capable of maintaining traditions and embracing innovation, of being different every day without ever changing. The strategic position of the region, at the heart of the Mediterranean between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea, with 3 major sea ports (Bari, Brindisi and Taranto) and 6 smaller sea ports (Manfredonia, Barletta, Molfetta, Monopoli, Otranto and Gallipoli), has helped foster the continuous development of the blue economy. In fact, the combination of these features, the beauty of the sea, a year-round mild climate and a great many ports, marinas, natural harbours and landing stages, together with a modern and dynamic industrial base, has turned Apulia into the perfect place for the leisure boating industry to flourish. THE LEISURE BOAT SECTOR IN APULIA The region of Apulia, with its coastline of over 865 km, is a natural place where the blue economy is an important driver of economic development. The region is a logistics hub for the transport of goods and passengers, thanks to the presence of three major 3 major sea ports in: Taranto (container shipping; the 3rd largest container shipping port in Italy for cargo handling), Bari (passenger and container shipping) Brindisi (passenger shipping), as well as 6 minor ports (mainly for trade and fishing industries). In recent years, the region has become a top tourist destination and remains oriented towards sustainable rather than mass tourism, despite welcoming over 15 million tourists every year. The region is also home to a yacht building business cluster which represents over 140 companies, involved in boat building, boat maintenance, components and maritime services. In 2018 value of regional exports in boating sector amounted to 2.74 million euros, showing an increase of 34% in respect of 2017. In the same period the national exports increased only by 6.1%. The main partner countries for exports from Apulia in 2018 were: Spain (with regional exports totaling more than 782,000 euros), Hong Kong (553,000 euros), Cayman Island (387,000 euros), Lithuania (262,000 euros), United Kingdom (over 182,000 euros), Austria (119,000 euros) and Croatia (109,000 euros). In the first half of 2019 the value of Apulian sector exports amounted to 1.05 million euros. THE LEISURE BOAT SECTOR IN APULIA REGION There are almost 230 companies working in the leisure boat sector in Apulia, accounting for over 1,460 employees. The companies operating in the leisure boat sector in Apulia, operate mainly in the building and maintenance of boats, covering the entire product cycle: design, construction, the manufacture of individual components, assembly, fitting and furnishing. Tradition, innovation and everything in between is the key to Apulia’s leisure boat sector. A particularly skilled manual workforce joins forces with modern technology, which results in levels of excellence and top-quality designs. It is a sector that fosters research and innovation, moving the traditional production network towards increasingly advanced technological procedures that make full use of innovative materials and environmentally sustainable components resulting in lighter but stronger boats that use less fuel. Sorge a 31 km a sud-est di Bari, a 254 metri sul livello del mare su una 3 superficie di 70,77 km2 confinante con Casamassima, Conversano, Gioia del Colle, Rutigliano e Sammichele di Bari. Si estende, quindi, sul territorio delle Murge, noto per la sua natura carsica e per questo ricco di doline, inghiottitoi, grotte e un'ampia idrografia sotterranea da cui si alimentano numerosi pozzi. Il paesaggio agrario di Turi è attraente: è caratterizzato, come il resto della Murgia, da lame e grotte, dislocate nelle contrade collinari intorno all’abitato, ma soprattutto da una serie di architetture in pietra e a secco che, dai muretti alle neviere, agli iazzi, alle fogge fino ai monumentali muri di recinzione, sono tutte costruzioni per lo più facenti parte dei servizi di masserie. Queste ultime, infatti, sono le protagoniste quasi assolute del paesaggio: tra le più note e ancora conservate troviamo Caracciolo, Musacco, Difesa, Orlandi, Serrone e il Santissimo che recano con sé tracce di un passato che le ha viste piene di vita e operosità.
