I immediately loved her goofiness, her gorgeous smile, and her comeo time. Her character is a comic book fan who finds Stuart's hypochondria and neuroses adorable. I love the way she keeps herself both as an actress and as a comedian. Lauren also improved, and she appeared on HBO's Crashing and Netflix's Orange as the New Black. Here, the Chicago native answers our 5 questions in depth so we can all get to know her better! Do you believe in God? Right out of the gate with a huge question! I love this post. I'm not particularly religious, but I feel comforted by the idea of a higher power. I've spoken to God on a handful of occasions, so hopefully someone has been listening other than Alexa or whatever. But most days I subscribe to optimistic nihilism... the idea that there is no practical point for anything, allows us to decide exactly what we want the point to be. It makes life a little more enjoyable for me. Times when I feel anxious or turned out about something, I can pull back and think, No point to any of this, so why am I wasting my time making myself feel bad? There is a great Youtube video on optimistic nihilism that you should check out if you want a very clear definition. I highly recommend watching it! Finally, the problem is to be happy and make others happy and help the world however you can... that answers your question? What do you think will happen when we die? I think our spirit lives somewhere else, in one direction I can not conceptualize. I feel the presence of people and animals I have lost, and I like to think they live on some form. I'm not a big fan of the whole of you dying and then you're gone and that's the end of things, but the video I link above gives a consolation going into that possibility. How were you doing in high school? I was very similar to who I am today, but with less confidence and worse hair. I auditioned for just about every play my school did and got into ZERO. I was somehow allowed into the student-produced sketch show every year, which was a dream come true. I always dreamed of becoming a comedian but didn't know how to do it. I started taking improvement classes at my Chicago iO last year of high school (a teacher suggested I give it a shot-shout-out to Aaron Carney), and started an internal change towards expressing myself in a positive way and learning how to be confident even if I don't know what the hell is going on. I really believe I'm comfortable with who I'm because of the improvement. I have no interest in seeing my sliding doors where I end up being a kind-of-funny business woman or something. In fact, I may be very interested see that if anyone has access. What advice would you give young women to start in comedy? Go for it! Don't tell yourself to get out after your dreams. It can be so easy to let fear go through while you sit back and let life happen to you. But if you think you might be good at something, you should try it. It's going to be tough at first. Even those who kill their first time on stage quickly realize it is not always easy. You'll have a lot of struggles and you'll doubt yourself or think too much of the dumb things you said or did, but that's life! Try to give yourself a break and pursue this very silly and very interesting path. For those interested in improving: Take a class and watch as many live improvement programs as possible. Start performing earlier than you think. Form a group with people from your class who seem cool and easy to be around and sign up to do shows in independent cinemas. Granted, this is much easier if you live in a big city, but look for opportunities in your town. Whether you improve theater in your town or not, listen to improved podcasts! There are many of them. I wish I had access to the podcast when I got started! I recommend my own podcast (how convenient): With special guest Lauren Lapkus (full archive of 150 episodes available on Stitcher Premium, you can get a free month by going to stitcherpremium.com/threedom and using the THREEDOM code. Threedom is one of my podcasts, with Scott Aukerman and Paul F. Tompkins. And it would just be strange at this point not to mention my third podcast, Raised by TV, which I host with Jon Gabrus. We talk about the 80s and 90s TV and interview cool people. I know it's crazy to have three podcasts, but here we are. Also I know this question is about young women interested in participating in comedy, which I fully support—if you listen to any of these programs, you will quickly know that I love tangents. Do you consider your brand when participating in projects? That is, be quirky and funny and lovely and smart... are you looking for roles that take advantage of this? Aw, thank you for seeing that as my brand! I love roles that allow me to try to be all that. I realized early on that it was difficult for me to avoid quirky routes, considering my face/head/brain. I chose to rely on that and will continue to do so and hope to be working into my late 90s. I also like to do things that are a bit unexpected, so when I get the chance, I'll usually say yes to do something pushed me out of my comfort zone. What I'm saying is, if anyone wants to cast me as a mafioso I have available. Read more from Mayim Mayim Mayim
