The park’s saproxylic beetle fauna, associated with dead wood and veteran trees, can be considered as nationally important. Dumfries & Galloway Wildlife Review Cover Image: Hedgehog by Keith Kirk. Keith is a former Dumfries & Galloway Council ranger and now helps to run Nocturnal Wildlife Tours based in Castle Douglas. The tours use a specially prepared night tours vehicle, complete with external mounted thermal camera and internal viewing screens. Each participant also has their own state- of-the-art thermal imaging device to use for the duration of the tour. This allows participants to detect animals as small as rabbits at up to 300 metres away or get close enough to see Badgers and Roe Deer going about their nightly routine without them knowing you’re there. Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

MACRON WREXHAM JUNIOR LEAGUE Summary by Phil Jones Saturday 7th March 2020 There was a massive surprise in store for the runaway league leaders in the Under 12 Green Division and title favourites Rhosddu were beaten fairly and squarely 4-2 by Chirk Youth to end their 14 match unbeaten run. On target for the winners were James Skirton, Alfie Robinson, Ethan McInnes and William Cook. Replying for the hosts were Gerwyn Roberts and Dewi Bailey. Ruthin Town Youth secured a narrow 2-1 success over Borras Park Albion with strikes from Jayden Parry and Peter Baldry with Harry Hewitt hitting back after being set up by Oscar Allen. In the RED Division, there were goals galore at Ruthin Town who sent plucky Hope Dragons crashing to a 13-0 defeat courtesy of strikes from Dafydd Edwards and Leo Jones who converted a hat-trick apiece and completing the whitewash were Elgan Ellis(2), Finlay Mabwe, Harry Lewis-Jones and Jac Price adding to an own goal. Keiran Williams bagged all 3 of the Brymbo Lodge goals in their 7-3 reversal against Borras Park Rangers who came good through Kai Wright who also produced 2 assists, Danté Robinson and Daniel Davies weighed in with double salvos with Nathan Wyderka and Jack Lloyd-Evans sealing the visitors success. Rhos Aelwyd reversed their clash with Coedpoeth United to New Broughton Rec and it worked a treat with them securing a convincing 4-1 success. On target were Oscar Allen who converted a penalty, Dan Lennon, Callum Hughes and Tyler Hughes with new signing Dafydd Bailey Williams reducing the deficit. -

STEINER, Birgit C. SCHLICK-STEINER, Giselher GRABENWEGER & Heinz WIESBAUER Abstract Crabro varus PANZER, 1799 has been originally described from Austria. After the type material has been destroyed, species identity was controversal. Most recently (BITSCH & LECLERCQ 1993, LECLERCQ 1993), the taxon has been interpreted as a species of the ant hunters, genus Tracheliodes, based on a single female collected in Corse, France. New records of Tracheliodes varus from Lower Austria confirm this interpretation; in order to stabilize the species identity, we designated a neotype from the type area, Austria. Tracheliodes varus is most similar to T. curvitarsus (HERRICH-SCHAEFFER, 1841). We present diagnoses and illustrations, describe the variation of colour patterns and give new information on the discrimination of the females of these two sibling species. New records from Austria are reported for Tracheliodes curvitarsus after more than 100 years, and for T. varus after more than 200 years. Trache- liodes curvitarsus is recorded for the first time from Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, T. varus for the first time from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Bulgaria. In Laxenburg, Lower Austria, females of T. curvitarsus and T. varus have been found syntopic, both of them hunting workers of the dolichoderine ant Liometopum microcephalum (PANZER, 1798). Based on film sequences, we present first observations on the hunting behaviour of T. varus.
