POSTED SEPTEMBER 9, 2020 From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“How often must I forgive?” (Matthew 18:21)

Th e question St. Peter presents to Jesus is one I am sure we have all had to contemplate. When another person has hurt us, especially someone close to us, we may struggle to know if there should be a time when enough is enough. Th e readings today help to set up our understanding of the power of forgiveness in our lives and how that forgiveness must be lived out. Psychology and our human wisdom already teach that we are not to harbor grievances: the prophets of the past and present have recommended the wisdom of renouncing the evils of resentment and anger. Sirach calls them, “hateful things.” But notice, this reading, in its argument to forgive, does not appeal to human wisdom, but to our experience of God. Th e last line of the passage is the clue, “...remember the Most High’s covenant, and overlook faults.” Th at seems to sum it up. Th e reason and the power to forgive come from what God has done fi rst for us. He has established a covenant with us. Th at covenant demands from us a response to God’s commands. To live as members of God’s holy people we must take seriously how the Lord teaches us to respond to those around us. Certainly, at times, it can be a struggle and a diffi cult one at that! Th ere are people who have and may continue to hurt us by their actions. Th ose actions may seem to suck the life out of us…and maybe they do. So the question to ask is why forgive?

If we refl ect on what God has done for us, it may help us to comprehend the response we are to give back to Him. He has certainly freed us from the debts we hold against others. So hopefully, being changed by the forgiveness that is always available to us, we can be renewed and enabled to forgive. Some areas for refl ection: What was our experience when we got something we didn’t earn, absolutely free? Has anyone ever done something good for us we didn’t deserve, didn’t even ask for? What did those experiences do for us? Did they change us? Were we somehow diff erent because of what we received? Th ose experiences might give us some insight into the unmerited gift off ered to the servant in the gospel. Too bad he didn’t let forgiveness enter and change his heart so as to make him forgiving towards his fellow servant.

To put it simply -- God makes the fi rst move towards us through His grace. We can’t do a thing about forgiving injustices against us until we have received the gift, unwrapped it and lived in it. We know that it is wise not to harbor grievances. St. John Paul the Great says that “Forgiveness is above all a personal choice, a decision of the heart to go against the natural instinct to pay back evil with evil.” Th ere are numerous examples of how a lack of forgiveness can eat away at our lives. I remember visiting an older woman in a hospital who is battling cancer. Th irty years ago, her husband divorced her and she harbored resentment and anger ever since. Because she has been obsessed by this past wrong and has not been able to let it go, it has aff ected her relationship with her children and grandchildren. She has held him bound, but she has also been held bound. Th e power she thought she had over him, by not forgiving, has stolen her life, robbed her of the deeper appreciation of family, friends and life’s daily gifts.

How diff erent would the servant’s life have been if he had just given what he had received. Th e power of God’s call to be forgiven and TO FORGIVE is life giving and freeing. Is there anyone in your life that needs your forgiveness..not so much for them..but for you? In the end, Jesus tells us, it will be how we are judged.

I want to welcome back the students to the Schools of St. Mary and pray for a wonderful year. Th e Schools and the Religious Education Program are strictly following guidelines presented by the state and our own advisors. Our maintenance staff is doing great work and everything in their power to keep our children safe.

After my letter addressing some of our fi nancial challenges, so many people responded not only with donations but with beautiful letters and notes. I am always so touched and grateful for the wonderful and kind generosity of our people…. so thank you all! You make my responsibility as pastor such a joy and privilege. I am confi dent that with your generous support and love for St. Mary’s, we will continue to receive assistance to stabilize our weekly collection.

As was stated last week, our new schedule for parish worship and prayer will begin the weekend of September 19/20th. Please see the information on the opposite page and our website.

Bishop Barres Celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Mary with a new Pastoral Letter Evangelium Vitae: Th e Gospel of Life for Today

Twenty-fi ve years ago, Pope St. John Paul’s encyclical, Evangelium Vitae was a most timely and important proclamation of the inviolability and dignity of every human life. In it, he identifi ed the contemporary attacks on the dignity of human life, explained Catholic moral teaching on life issues, and proposed a vision for building a culture of life, while emphasizing the inimitable role of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the most holy Mother of Our Lord, and indeed, our Mother, too.

It is particularly fi tting that Evangelium Vitae: A Gospel of Life for Today is issued as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has announced that October, Respect Life Month, begins the year-long theme “Live the Gospel of Life,” during which we will more deeply explore the Church’s teachings on human life and how we can more faithfully follow Christ’s example.

Cross is symbol of God’s love, not superstitious ornament, pope says

Christ’s cross is a powerful symbol of God’s love for humanity and not just a decoration or trinket, said. While Christians often hang a crucifi x on the wall or wear one around their necks, it should be used as a sign “of our desire to be united with Christ” and not “reduced to a superstitious object or an ornamental necklace,” the pope said on August 30th during his Sunday Angelus address.

“Each time we fi x our gaze on the image of Christ crucifi ed, let us contemplate that he, as the true servant of the Lord, has accomplished his mission, giving life, spilling his blood for the forgiveness of sins,” the pope said. Monday, September 14th Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time | September 13, 2020 Remembering and Caring for our Senior Priests Do you ever think about a favorite Pastor or Parish Priest and wonder how they are and where they may be living?

Well, for our Senior Priests who are living at St. Pius X Residence, life is good and sometimes very busy.

“We are very happy that more and more of our Priests are taking advantagee of this wonderful facility. We thank you for your support, we depend on it, especially now with the increasing costs we are experiencing. We couldn’t do it without you!” - Rev. Msgr. Thomas Costa, Vicar for Senior Priests

“Since I arrived at St. Pius X, I have found living here like being at home. I have found much happiness with my fellow priests and in the entire community, and I especially appreciate the support I receive. Thank you for helping to make this home possible.” - Rev. Msgr. T Peter Ryan

Even in retirement our senior priests retain roles as ourr shepherds, and St. Pius X enables these dedicated men who live there to be fully engaged members of the community. “Still on duty,” they serve as our teachers, counselors, and spiritual leaders.

The special collection for retired priests living at St. Pius X Residence will take place next weekend. Please be as generous as possible!
