2nd Annual COTA SA Conversation on Ageing presented by KeyInvest presents GEORGE NEGUS ‘Modern Ageing and the Media’ George Negus has carved a global career as a writer, journalist, TV and radio presenter, author and now media consultant. It is a career that has played out across our screens, airwaves and newspapers for close to 5 decades. He is still as feisty and reflective as ever and he has agreed to share his thoughts as part of the 49th COTA SA Every Generation Festival. It is often pointed out that older people seem to be invisible in today’s media…until a trite stereotype is trotted out, sometimes for comedic value. The older person seems endlessly presented as doddery, forgetful, short-tempered, cunning, ‘out-of-touch’ or more recently, as a burden. Or maybe sick, decrepit or as an object of pity requiring help…. What a load of nonsense! Our topic, ‘Modern Ageing & The Media’ will examine the depiction of older people in media today, have a closer look at the stereotypes and discuss how to address the situation…or maybe, it doesn’t need changing at all? George Negus will feature ‘in conversation’ with Five AA announcer and The Advertiser columnist David Penberthy. They will discuss George’ s long & colourful career as a leading journalist and how he has seen the role of media change over the past 40 years. This will be followed by our panel discussion, taking a closer look at our topic and the myriad ways media engages with our older communities. Our panelists are Chantal Contouri (Number 96, The Sullivans); Jane Mussared (CE, COTA SA), Mick Bower (Masters Apprentices) and George Negus. Armed with an Arts and Journalism degree, Negus started life as a high school teacher writing occasional pieces for The Australian and The Australian Financial Review, before becoming Press Secretary for then Attorney-General, Lionel Murphy. His TV career blossomed in 1967 when he became a reporter for the pioneering ABC current affairs show, ‘This Day Tonight’, a role he held until 1979 when he became a reporter on the Australian version of ‘60 Minutes’. This was followed through the 1990’s as host of the ABC’s ‘Foreign Correspondent’ before he ‘retired’ to Italy to write his first book. Please join COTA SA and sponsors KeyInvest for an entertaining evening of anecdotes, stories and thought-provoking conversation as we delve into this very modern issue.
