The Portrait of Mariano Fortuny by Vincenzo Gemito under discussion in this paper is a cast of very lofty technical and formal quality. In this bust, which he designed while still only a very young man, Gemito reveals both his outstanding talent for vibrant naturalism and his skill in capturing a sitter's temperament thanks to his mastery of the realistic rendering of his sitter's facial features. The figure is deep in thought, his noble profile crowned by the thick, ruffled hair typical of a Romantic, modelled with strong and vibrant chiaroscuro. Every part of the sculpture's surface conveys the feeling of a living being, communicating a secret inner energy which seems to pervade the bronze thanks to an extremely painterly approach to modelling. Mariano Fortuny's head is inclined to one side in an informal pose, but the figure's nobility confers a lofty dignity on him that saves him from looking casual in any way. L’ARTE A ROMA Nel panorama artistico romano tra la seconda metà dell’Ottocento e il primo ventennio del Novecento, il genere più affrontato dalla pittura di cavalletto è quello del paesaggio. Una radicale svolta in tal senso si deve soprattutto alla figura del grande pittore e patriota Nino Costa, punto di riferimento per molti artisti attivi a Roma, presente in questa sezione della mostra con la celebre opera Alla fonte o La ninfa dei boschi . La sua concezione di paesaggio, venata di istanze simboliste, ispirerà profondamente quella di pittori come Erulo Eroli, Scipione Vannutelli e Giulio Aristide Sartorio, del quale si espone una suggestiva Veduta di Ninfa . L’estetica di Sartorio si avvicina a quella di Enrico Coleman: l’intento poetico della sua veduta del lago di Nemi, realizzata nel 1909, è evidente a partire dal titolo, Speculum Dianae , secondo cui il lago è lo specchio di Diana, ovvero la luna, appena spuntata sopra il rosso cupo del tramonto. Allo stesso contesto culturale si lega la realizzazione dell’ Elegia di Onorato Carlandi, visione insolita e misteriosa della natura, e de Le vergini savie e le vergini stolte di Sartorio, uno dei più significativi esempi di pittura simbolista di fine Ottocento. L’opera rivela la vicinanza dell’artista alla pittura inglese dei preraffaelliti, conosciuta attraverso alcune riproduzioni mostrategli dal poeta Gabriele D’Annunzio e grazie all’osservazione diretta delle loro opere presenti alla mostre dell’associazione “In Arte Libertas” tra il 1890 e il 1892.
