Abstract Ornithogalum dubium is a frost-tender bulbous plant native to South Africa. It is mainly grown for cut flower and flowering pot-plant production. It generally produces 10-25 cm-long flowering-stems, bearing 5-25 yellow to orange flowers with a dark green/brown center. It is in great demand in Europe and North America as a cut flower and a flowering-house pot plant. O. dubium was introduced as a new cut-flower crop less than a decade ago and is still only grown on a small scale due to its variable flower quality. The main objective of the present study was to improve flowering-stem length. A three week preplanting temperarture treatment of 13°C resulted in significantly longer flowering-stems than treatments at 2, 9 or 25°C. Controlled growth-temperature and day length experiments indicated that warm day/night tempertures of 27/22°C induce early anthesis. Under this temperature combination, earliest flowering occurred under long day conditions. Stem length was maximal at moderately-low production temperatures, and long days further increased length. The number of florets per inflorescence depended on temperature. Under the two lower temperature regimes, many flowers developed per inflorescence and, again, long days enhanced this number. -

In all, 789 plant specimens that consisted of 104 taxa belonging to 13 families and 30 genera were gathered from the investigation area. Of all the collected specimens, 19 taxa were new records for C6, C7, and C8, and 11 taxa were endemic to Turkey. Scilla mesopotamica Speta, which was first collected from Şanlıurfa-Halfeti in 1888 by Sintenis and was considered a missing species, was rediscovered after 116 years during this study. Colchicum crocifolium Boiss. was also determined as a new record for Turkey. According to floristic regions, Irano-Turanian elements ranked first among the specimens, accounting for 47.12%, followed by Mediterranean elements (25.00%) and Euro-Siberian elements (0.96%). Some of the identified species (26.92%) were widespread and of unknown phytogeographic origin. In addition, 86.54% of the collected taxa were determined to be monocotyledons and the remaining (13.46%) were dicotyledons. The families with the most taxa in the research area were Liliaceae (59) and Iridaceae (14). -

Small Garden: Small Stories Do you find that your garden is an album of remembrance? There are so many of my plants that either grew from passalong bits or arrived in a pot as a gift that merely to walk around is to remember the kindness of dear friends and family. The sensitive fern that flourishes near the foundation of the back of the house and which covers a rug-size area of bad clay soil began as a clump from Mary Ann’s wonderful garden. Sensitive fern, Onoclea sensibilis has, in spring, long, deeply pinnated sterile fronds that appear from creeping rhizomes. The fertile fronds are two-pinnate with contracted bead-like black segments curled in to cover the sori and appear in late summer to last all winter. [I had to look up sori: a sorus is the cluster of sporangia usually on the underside of a fern front. The tissue that covers the sori is called an indusium.] It is the right plant for that difficult place. Last spring when I visited Carol Wilson’s English garden, among its many delights was the annual Love-in-a-mist, Nigella damascena, a confection of white petals in a nest of needle fine foliage. Carol kindly gave me seeds and I scattered them. I often do that- and it’s the end of the story. These seeds sprouted! What fun to see them grow and bloom. They are near the Rosa rugosa alba, adding white to white. The only sprig of that rugosa foliage to have flowered this spring has had a rose red one? I hadn’t realized the seedling was there and if ‘alba’ is not hybrid why was it not white? My sunny flower bed is currently awash in uninvited Lychnis coronaria, (aka Dusty Miller, Rose Campion). -

Furthermore, recent studies have provided evidence of various antifungal, antidiabetic, and anticancer effects of some Allium species. Allium is also well known in traditional medicine for its ability to cure various ailments such as wounds or acute and chronic bronchitis; additionally, alliums can be used as expectorants due to the presence of cysteine sulfoxide and its derivatives. Cysteine sulfoxides, which are some of the basic secondary compounds in Allium, have been addressed in various studies. Alliin, propiin, methin, marasmin, and thiosulfinate, all of which are alliinase substrates, are of particular interest because of their pharmaceutical effects. The enzymatic reaction that occurs during the formation of disulfides or thiosufinates results in various compounds that differ chemically, physically, and pharmaceutically.The cysteine sulfoxide recently investigated in A. giganteum, A. rarolininanum, A. rosenorum, and A. macleani species is the S-(pyrrolyl)cysteine S-oxide. -
