[email protected] Hordern House recently received the wonderful library of Dr Robert Edwards AO, and over the next year or two we will be offering the library for sale. Bob is one of the great figures of Australian cultural history, at different times working as a leading anthropologist, a central figure in the study of indigenous art, a museum director and a driving force behind many of the international blockbuster art shows to travel to Australia. His early training as an anthropologist saw him doing fieldwork in remote Australia, and led to him becoming a museum curator in the 1960s and 70s. He was the founding director of the Australia Council’s Aboriginal Arts Board, perhaps most famous for its support of the Papunya Tula artists. He was the Director of the Museum of Victoria from 1984-90, the founding chairman of the National Museum of Australia and the founding chairman of the National Portrait Gallery. He has also for many years been the chief executive of Art Exhibitions Australia which brought to Australia significant exhibitions, including the Entombed Warriors from China (1982), Claude Monet (1985), Van Gogh (1993) and Rembrandt (1997). Bob is an ardent bibliophile, and his Library reflects the discerning taste of a knowledgeable and educated collector. Some books are of such rarity that they are known in only a handful of copies, and his collection embraces early Australian printing, early works on the Australian Aborigines, the major early voyage accounts, as well as works on early settlement and inland exploration.

Implementing a Large Group Fieldwork Day. Cath Donnelly HT HSIE Irrawang High School GTANSW Counsellor PTC Director 1. Administration (AKA death by paperwork) 2. Running the Day 3. Samples of venues and activities (coastal and local park) Scenario – You have been given the responsibility of organising a Year 10 Fieldwork excursion for a whole year group (150+ students). In groups come up with a list of essential things you need to do before the day of the trip. Use the butcher’s paper on your table. (10 minutes) Administration 1. Have a conversation with your Principal to gain support for running the activity. Some things to mention include: • Fieldwork is a mandatory component of the syllabus • Fieldwork Programs engage community and improve the schools public relations and branding (especially via social media). • There are many benefits to students for example: “Good quality day and residential fieldwork helps improve education standards and should be a vital element of an imaginative and contemporary education programme. Fieldwork helps students develop their understanding of subjects such geography as evidence-based disciplines, and acquire the hands-on experimental skills that are an essential part of those subjects. Outdoor learning also provides an exciting and memorable experience for young people, and helps transfer what they learn in school to their everyday lives by dealing first hand with real world examples. Learning outside, especially in a novel setting, introduces challenging situations, opportunities to become risk aware rather than just risk averse; builds self-confidence; develops a sense of responsibility and tolerance towards places and people by experiencing different communities and surroundings; and ultimately offers young people the opportunity to experience, explore and investigate – vital elements in the development of a modern citizen.” From- https://www.fieldstudiescouncil.org/media/477938/fsc_general_issues_briefing_june_2012.pdf).

  • First Class 20 Artists(PDF, 81KB)
Now in its thirteenth year, First Class 20 continues to celebrate outstanding works produced by HSC Visual Arts students from the Hunter and Central Coast regions from the previous year. Giving young artists the chance to present their work within a professional gallery environment, First Class 20 also provides audience opportunities, with a nationally recognised platform showcasing the high calibre of works produced in the area. Employing a variety of visual imagery and techniques, many of these artists have turned inwards to explore the impact of this pandemic year on emotional and mental health. Themes of family, memories and the importance of home are distinctive concepts predominant in these exceptional times. Intimate works explore complex connections to home and identity, nostalgia, youth and personal relationships. Through the avenue of visual arts these student bodies of work reveal subjective insights into current concerns such as COVID, science and medicine, isolation, fear and anxiety. Many works highlight the vulnerability and fragility of the individual, allowing the audience an entry into the artist’s world through revealing private moments. A deep connection to nature is also explored with symbolic interpretations commenting on environmental impacts, damaged ecosystems and ecological responsibilities. The artworks embody the uncertain narrative of life today and comment on contemporary issues faced by society. - HELEN WILLIS Trinity Alt Grace Bosworth Sophie Davidson Jasmine Gibson Avondale School St Francis Xavier College
