Profile- Ms Clair Wotton By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

Ms Wotton has been at IHS teaching in the HSIE Faculty since 2013. During that time the subjects she has taught have included Geography, History, Business Studies and Legal Studies.

Ms Wotton has played an integral role in the Gifted and Talented Students (GATS) program since 2014, becoming GATS Co-ordinator in 2016. This role sees her organising a range of GATS opportunities for IHS students, including Tournament of The Minds, participation in external competitions and the GATS Enrichment exhibition, amongst many others.

Co-ordinating Irrawang High's GATS enrichment program (for years 5 and 6) with our Lakeside Learning Community partner schools, has provided much satisfaction for Ms Wotton. Meeting selected Year 5 and 6 students, organising enrichment activity days with fellow IHS staff and the Year 4 Bridge Building competition, and Robocup, gives her enormous satisfaction.

After teaching here for only two years, Ms Wotton’s talents were recognised in 2015, when she won the NSW Teacher of the Year Award after being nominated by her Year 12 Legal Studies class. The following year she was again acknowledged at the 2016 Education Week Awards, where she students which cater for their varying interests, strengths and received an Excellence in Teaching Award for her contribution to the GATS needs,” said Ms Wotton. program.

Profile- Mr Chris Enright By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

Loved the smells coming from the kitchens recently when the Year 12 Hospitality students created a share dessert plate for two people starring a brandy snap basket with pastry cream and berries and churros with choc orange dipping sauce.

Their teacher, Mr Chris Enright is a qualified chef and has been in the hospitality industry since 1989. His background is impressive and we can see where our students are learning their great array of skills from.

Mr Enright worked for the Penrith Panthers managing their catering department before moving to Port Stephens in 2000. He owned the famous and very popular, Seagrass Restaurant in Salamander Bay and later secured the catering contract at Fingal Sports Club. Deciding that he wanted to head in the teaching direction, Mr Enright gained his BEd Food Technology and Design Technology in 2007.

IHS is very fortunate to have Mr Enright imparting his creativity, experience, and hospitality knowledge to our students. By the looks of the photos posted over the past 12 months they are certainly reaping the rewards.

What is Community PBL? Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) in the community is a joint initiative with Irrawang HS, Hunter River HS, Grahamstown PS, Irrawang PS and Raymond Terrace PS.

It is our hope that schools, parents, businesses, service providers and government agencies will embrace PBL as a framework to give every child the opportunity to reach their full potential by being more positively engaged at school, home and in the community.

Each week, a student from each of the above schools is nominated by the school (or a community member) to receive a Community PBL Award and this happens at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace every Thursday at 6:00pm. MarketPlace owners and Colleen and her team have been incredibly supportive with this program from the very start, helping with suggestions, time and resources at every opportunity. Their generosity can never be repaid. We encourage everyone to come along on a Thursday evening to support our students as they receive their award.

Breakfast club By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

Breakfast Club - every Tuesday.

With the help of a great bunch of volunteers, and co-ordinated by our School Chaplain Mrs Allison, the Breakfast Club has been operating now for six years, where approximately 130 students each week are enjoying a hot breakfast and a hot cup of Milo (in Terms 2 and 3). With the tins of Milo being the greatest expense, any donations of tins would be gratefully received and can be dropped off at the front reception area at school.

Congratulations Tayla! By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

Year 10 student Tayla Johnson is one very brave young lady without any fear of large animals. Twelve months ago, Tayla and her dad went to a rodeo and she liked it so much she wanted to give bull riding a try.

After competitions at Scone, Singleton, Dungog and Stroud inthe 12-18yo class and having picked up a 3rd place, she is still loving it.

The intention is to stay on the steer for eight seconds and winning a place depends on how well the animal was ridden during that time. Safety gear is a priority and wearing a helmet and special vest is mandatory. There have been a few injuries along the way, including a current broken finger.

Well done Tayla! We look forward to hearing more about your future accomplishments in your unusual sport! Congrats Sean and Shayley!

Food Tech

Huge congrats Sean and we wish you well in your new career as a Greenkeeper.

Celebs Visit IHS

Celebs visit IHS for a worthy cause By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

A special time for our Indigenous students recently when they attended a workshop on “Tackling Indigenous Smoking,” funded by the Awabakal Medical Services and facilitated by No Limit Management.

Well know NRL stars Cody Walker from the South Sydney Rabbitohs, former Manly player, George Rose and international model, Samantha Harris joined the group and spoke of their life journeys and reinforced to students the dangers of smoking, encouraging them to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle and stand up to peer pressure.

An opportunity for photos and autographs followed fun but physical team and confidence building activities.

Does your child need an extra hand with English or Maths?

Sometimes children fall behind at school. They may have moved from another state, changed classes, or something else has happened in their life beyond your control. For whatever reason they then begin to struggle with their work at school, with their homework and with their exams. This can be frustrating for both them and you as a parent.

Kip McGrath specialises in helping children catch up to where they need to be in English and Maths. The resources we use are specifically designed to do this job. And the reason we only use qualified teachers, is that they have the tools and skills to accelerate your child’s learning, so that any gaps are closed as quickly as possible.

We complement what is done at school to help your child. Your school gives your child an essential foundation in education across a wide range of subjects and developmental activities. Our job is to give your child an extra hand when they need to catch up … for whatever reason. So together we can help your child reach their full potential.

If your child is experiencing these frustrations and they need an extra hand in English or Maths, then call Christine to see how we can help. 4983 1000 www.kipmcgrath.com.au/raymond-terrace
