"Opening Doors" By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

A wonderful opportunity arose for Year 10 & 11 students recently when they were invited to the Parry Street Theatre for a free performance of "Opening Doors" - an interactive play that explored the themes of domestic violence and sexting for young people.

Following and throughout the performance, counsellors and representatives from various agencies were on hand to answer any legal or otherwise questions from our students regarding the at times confrontational play.

This was an excellent performance, sponsored by NIB - and presented by Tantrum Youth Arts and the Cooperative Legal Service Delivery Program - so a HUGE thanks to them all for giving us the opportunity to attend.

NAIDOC Week

By Mrs L Fagan

Community Liaison Officer

We began our National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week celebrations in August with a special school assembly followed by a morning tea attended by our Guests of Honour, Uncle Neville Lilley and Aunty Lorraine Lilley.

Lots of activities including language lessons, touch footy and a bush tucker workshop were held throughout the week.

Spring Fair By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

Our Spring Fair held on September 3rd was deemed a success by all who attended. Despite dire weather predictions the rain stayed away and we had a beautiful, sunny albeit windy day with a huge amount of fun. All faculties were represented; Year 11 Business Studies students showed their entrepreneurial skills; the animals with the king Hamish the Llama were a big hit and the market stalls and rides were kept busy - (don't think we have had a jumping castle in the hall before).

Great to have such good community support, the Raymond Terrace SES, and Fire Rescue NSW were here along with the Rotary Club of Raymond Terrace and the Lions Club of Raymond Terrace.

Big thanks to Ms Henry and her team of volunteers for all their hours of organisation and planning for this successful event.

Crazy Teal Day

MAKING HEADLINES! - Crazy Teal Day By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

We have got some amazingly generous students, parents, families and staff at this school as well as many who are wonderful sports. A much anticipated “Crazy Teal Day" assembly where Ms Duma was raising funds and awareness for Ovarian Cancer Australia was held at the beginning of September. In October this year she is

heading off to China to do the Walk for Women: Great Wall of China Challenge.

The IHS Challenge:  if we raised $1500 Ms Henry would wear a dress, shave her head and sing a song  if we raised $2000 Mr Baxter would shave his beard and moustache and Ms Duma would turn her hair blue

$2052.96 was raised for Crazy Teal Day including $740.95 in cash donations from our school, with Ms Duma raising $4299.76 overall, exceeding her personal target.

Special thanks to our P&C President, Claire Graham (and yes, she is a barber and works at Andrews Barber Shop) who defluffed Mr Baxter and Year 10 student Dylan Edwards (ably assisted by his sister Louise) who pruned Ms Henry.

Good, Better, Best, never let it rest, till your good is better

National Tree Day By Mrs L Fagan Community Liaison Officer

To celebrate National Tree Day recently, our Primary Industries teacher extraordinaire, Ms Tanya Henry organised a delivery of 300 trees (Forest Sheoak and Mahogany) generously donated to our school by Mr Lee McElroy of Port Stephens Council.

Students, along with help from teacher, Miss Sande Hughes and Allison and Leanne from the canteen, sprang into action and prepared the soil by rotary hoeing and fertilising the ground before planting began. The trees were raised from seedlings at the Ngioka Horticulture and Therapy Centre in Nelson Bay.

Does your child need an extra hand with English or Maths?

Sometimes children fall behind at school. They may have moved from another state, changed classes, or something else has happened in their life beyond your control. For whatever reason they then begin to struggle with their work at school, with their homework and with their exams. This can be frustrating for both them and you as a parent.

Kip McGrath specialises in helping children catch up to where they need to be in English and Maths. The resources we use are specifically designed to do this job. And the reason we only use qualified teachers, is that they have the tools and skills to accelerate your child’s learning, so that any gaps are closed as quickly as possible.

We complement what is done at school to help your child. Your school gives your child an essential foundation in education across a wide range of subjects and developmental activities. Our job is to give your child an extra hand when they need to catch up … for whatever reason. So together we can help your child reach their full potential.

If your child is experiencing these frustrations and they need an extra hand in English or Maths, then call Christine to see how we can help. 4983 1000 www.kipmcgrath.com.au/raymond-terrace
