In 1962, began sailing at seven years of age, aboard the family sailboat, an Islander Bahama 24 on the Potomac River, near Washington, DC.

Following year, family purchased an Islander 32, “Outward Bound” and moved it to the West River, just south of Annapolis, MD, on the Chesapeake Bay.

In 1967, Wilbar had first “formal” sail training through the West River Sailing Club, Chesapeake Bay. Sailed Penguins.

Through the late 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s, Wilbar sailed to most every creek on the Chesapeake Bay north of the Patuxent River aboard Outward Bound. In 1973, Wilbar and family sailed from West River to Newport, RI, going through the C&D canal, out the Delaware Bay, and up the coast to Newport, RI. Return trip inside through ’s Hell’s Gate. Crewed and raced on a J27 and J36 regularly during the early eighties. Wilbar sailed “Outward Bound” on a regular basis.

Wilbar purchased an Endeavor 37 in early 1987, and lived aboard for two years. Moved “Renegade” from Deale, MD to Poquoson, VA. Married 1989. During honeymoon, spent two weeks with in-laws sailing the Exumas, Bahamas, aboard their 38’ Nauti-Cat sailboat. Sold Renegade following honeymoon (of course).

Early nineties, Wilbar was General Manager for “CSA Charter and Sail”, an ASA school and 13-boat charter fleet, located on Willoughby Spit, in Norfolk, VA. In 1991, Wilbar earned the ASA 201 instructor rating. While GM of “CSA”, Wilbar sailed and was responsible for maintenance on anything from a Capri 14 to a 50-foot classic . During this time, and through the 90’s, raced J24’s, J35’s, J36’s. Spent two seasons racing J105.

Mid 90’s, Wilbar was employed in the insurance/financial industry. Stock Broker with Smith Barney, and LTC Insurance Specialist. Both jobs required face-to-face selling and small group presentations. Earned various credentials, including a certified insurance instructor. Developed and taught courses for insurance agents and financial professionals.

Late 90’s, Wilbar was certified “FIFA” youth soccer coach.

In 2003, purchased a Trophy 19’ dual-console powerboat. Used extensively in the Hampton Roads area. Sold boat upon divorce (of course).

In 2004, purchased a Capri 22, “Outward Bound II”. Wilbar sailed her throughout the southern Chesapeake Bay. Many times single-handed. In 2005, Wilbar left the financial industry to pursue sailing as a full time job. Briefly held position as Development Director for the “Pilot Virginia”, a 114-foot Tall replica, berthed in Norfolk, VA. Wilbar crewed on her for four days on the Chester River, then down the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk, VA. Responsibilities included helm, watch, and deck work.

From March of 2006 to December 2011, Wilbar was Base Manager for SailTime Virginia Beach. Responsibilities included all maintenance, operations, marketing, and hiring staff. Maintained fleet of six boats: three 22 footers, a Hunter 33, 36, and 38. In season, managed three instructors, and two maintenance staff.

In addition to base management responsibilities, Wilbar also developed the award-winning American Sailing Association sailing program at SailTime Virginia Beach: an “Outstanding ASA School of the Year” in 2007. His personal certifications include ASA 201 through 206, as well as “Cruising ”, and “Docking”. In February 2010, Wilbar became a Virginia Boating Safety Education Instructor. In October 2011, Wilbar qualified as an American Sailing Association “Instructor Evaluator.”

From 2006 through 2010, Wilbar was “Consulting/Training Captain” for SailTime’s annual “Novice to Captain” flotilla in the . Wilbar is very familiar with all the BVI “hot spots”, including Anegada.

In 2007, completed two deliveries: a Catalina 42 from Annapolis to Oriental, NC, 5 days; and a Maple Leaf 48 from St. Augustine, FL to St. Thomas, USVI.; roughly 1500 miles and 14 days at sea.

In 2009, Wilbar procured, developed and was lead instructor for ASA certified 101-106 sailing, navigation and seamanship courses for the US Navy’s “Master Mariner” Boat Team 20, as well as training for “Special Forces Development Group”, based in Virginia Beach, VA.

In March 2010, Wilbar participated in the St. Thomas Rolex Regatta, as a mark setter for the race committee.

From 2008 through 2011, Wilbar was Co-coordinator of the Willoughby Racers, a Thursday night “beer can” series, in Norfolk, VA.

December 2011 through November 2014, Wilbar held position of Recreational Boating Industry Consultant for a startup web site that connects people who want to rent boats with people and commercial organizations that have boats to charter and rent, “GetMyBoat.com”.

In February 2012, Wilbar participated in a private J World 4 day race training session on J80’s in Tampa, Florida. Following completion of training, Wilbar participated in the J80 “NOOD” regatta. In the fall of 2012, J World again provided training on Vortex Racings’ J105, “Special K”, in Annapolis, MD.

In August, 2012, Wilbar captained and provided ASA instruction aboard a Catana 41 catamaran 1100 miles from Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas to Marathon, Florida, and return to Marsh Harbour

In January 2013, Wilbar completed a multi-leg delivery of a Passport 40, with owner, from Annapolis, MD., to Cape Canaveral, FL.

December 2013, Wilbar led a double-handed deliver of a Hunter 33 from National Harbor on the Potomac, to Norfolk, VA.

April 2012 through November 2014, Wilbar was Program Director for “Vortex Racing”. The program included two J70’s, a J24,and a J105 that competed regularly on the Chesapeake Bay. In 2014, J70 “GetMyBoat” qualified for Nationals and Worlds.

In November 2014, Wilbar, along with first mate, Joyce, purchased an Island Packet 40 for extended cruising and future live aboard in the southern lats. Currently berthed on Little Creek, in Norfolk, VA.

Wilbars’ ties to the Caribbean go back to the early 70’s when his parents purchased a condo at Cowpet Bay, St. Thomas, near Red Hook. Since the late 80’s, his sister, Sue Wilbar Russell, and husband, Steve Russell, have lived aboard “Verity”, moored at Water Island, USVI.

Memberships include the Chesapeake Area Professional Captains Association, J105 Association, J24 Association, J70 Associa- tion, Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association, the Broad Bay Sailing Association, BVI Royal Yacht Club, the American Sailing Association, US Sailing.
