Friends of the Newport Ship Registered Charity No 1105449 www.newportship.org ____________ ____________________________ Rumours galore Uncertainties breed rumours, and the uncertainty over the future of the Ship is no exception. The most bizarre recent rumour came from a member of the public on a phone-in programme, saying that the Ship had been sold to Canada. Where did that idea come from? Newport City Council's chief rumour-destroyer, Mike Lewis, put the record straight in our October meeting at Malpas Court. Nearly 60 members turned up for this, a fascinating talk on medieval shipping and our AGM. In the last year, our understanding of the Ship has grown immensely as a result of the specialist investigations and work on the hull shape. Conservation continues, but freeze drying of the timbers may take a further 3-4 years, much longer than predicted. However, next Autumn the Project will have to vacate its current premises, so what happens then? York Archaeological Trust is responsible for the freeze drying, so the freeze drier will be taken up to York and the timbers taken up there in batches and then brought back. In the meantime, Newport Council is looking for a building in which the both the fully-conserved timbers and those in the queue for the freeze drier can be stored. The conserved timbers don't require a vast amount of room, but for a year or two there will need to be enough space for two of the tanks currently in the warehouse. The Council would like to find a building which is accessible to the public, and ideally in the city centre, so that the Friends can run it as a museum for the next few years. -

Other significant finds from the Nemi ships included the rung In 1929 the first of the two Nemi ships breached the construction of one of the anchors. It is the construction of waters of lake Nemi, seeing the surface of the lake for the first the anchor which is of key importance. The anchor takes the time in centuries. To recover the two ships, a pair of pleasure form of what would now be called an Admiralty Anchor, head ships created under the rule of Caligula, an attempt was made which, as with the ball bearings, had been thought to be a to drain lake Nemi. Foreign Submarine
Foreign submarine A serious political conflict between Sweden and the Soviet Union, in which a Lund physicist played an active role. Foreign submarine 426 427 Foreign submarine in Swedish archipelago On the evening of 28 October 1981 the front pages of the newspapers were filled with a surprising piece of news. A Soviet submarine on a secret mission had run aground on a rock in Blekinge archipelago. It was well inside a restricted military area and not far from Karlskrona naval base. Heightened state of alert Swedish military units from the navy and coastal rangers, among others, were assembled in the area over the following days. A large area was cordoned off. Helicopters and fighter aircraft patrolled the airspace and Swedish submarines were stationed underwater along the limit of territorial waters. The naval ship Thule was stationed as a barrier in the strait out towards open water. Foreign submarine 428 429 In all probability armed In an extra edition of the television news pro- gramme Aktuellt, a week after the grounding, Prime Minister Torbjörn Fälldin revealed that the submarine: ”… in all probability …” was armed with nuclear weapons. Political activity in Sweden and internationally was great. This was world news! Dagens Nyheter, 6 November 1981. The day after the Prime Minister’s revelation that there were nuclear weapons on board the submarine U137. On a secret mission In order to investigate whether the submarine was armed with nuclear weapons, measurements of the ionising radiation needed to be carried out. Reader Ragnar Hellborg from the Department of Physics in Lund was one of those who performed the measure- ments on behalf of the Swedish Defence Research Agency: It was around dinnertime on All Hallows’ Eve when the phone rang. -
Surgery at Sea: an Analysis of Shipboard Medical Practitioners and Their Instrumentation
Surgery at Sea: An Analysis of Shipboard Medical Practitioners and Their Instrumentation By Robin P. Croskery Howard April, 2016 Director of Thesis: Dr. Lynn Harris Major Department: Maritime Studies, History Abstract: Shipboard life has long been of interest to maritime history and archaeology researchers. Historical research into maritime medical practices, however, rarely uses archaeological data to support its claims. The primary objective of this thesis is to incorporate data sets from the medical assemblages of two shipwreck sites and one museum along with historical data into a comparative analysis. Using the methods of material culture theory and pattern recognition, this thesis will explore changes in western maritime medical practices as compared to land-based practices over time. -
